Find out what gamers are saying about Ancient Legacy:

Love simple games with deeper stories or things to incover.

We really enjoyed this game! The gameplay is quite simple like an old roll and move board game but engaging and manages to feel like an adventure. We have almost every title from Game Stew but we always come back to this one. It hits all the right spots for us. We would love to play a sequel to this or even an IAP update with new content or worlds to conquer. Favorite iOS game. Thanks!

Favorite developer, favorite games. Please keep making these great Game Boy colored games! Thank you!

Ancient Legacy feels like a simple but fun rogue board game. The experience is enjoyable, the game play is intuitive, and Im looking forward to endless fun playing this game.

We really really enjoyed this game when we were playing it, and when we kept dying, it made us want to keep trying to see how far we could get. But heres the thing. After all the buildup and all the time it took us to finally beat the final boss, we were expecting a little bit more than just a screen with the final score and a couple pages of epilogue text. We dont really know what we were expecting, but after such a long struggle, it felt a little bit anti-climactic. Aside from that, the gameplay was super fun and engaging with just the right amount of frustration. Keep up the good work, Game Stew. We look forward to many more games from you!

Let us start by saying that we love difficult games, and am completely comfortable with high stakes. We’re happy to die again and again if we’re given the opportunity to succeed by virtue of our decisions. However, this game is mostly on rails, with very little choice for the player of what to do next. Within minutes of beginning each game we encounter a relentless enemy with a +9 to every attack. If we spend $1 more to get a character that rolls two dice in combat, we have a miniscule chance to win if we roll boxcars. The game forces us around a circle so that we cannot avoid encountering the same enemy again and again until we’re dead. Serious rage quit. Deleted.

This is so addicting. We’ve been playing non stop the last two days.

Unique and entertaining. Definitely deserves more attention than it has gotten to this point. ***EDIT: Thanks for the continued support!

If you could tap to speed through animations and bridge screens and dice rolls etc. This would be 4 stars. As it stands it’s basically unplayable. We deleted it. If it’s updated, we’ll change our rating.

We love all Game Stew games like this. To us,this is what a phone game should be especially if you’re 45 like us and don’t have the time for games usually. We grew up with Game & Watch games so graphics are perfect. This is a fun game. We couldn’t sleep one night and when the sun was coming up,I realized I’d been playing for over 3 hours. Game is simple yet takes thought and some planning. We hate micro transactions but in this or other game stew games,I don’t mind. Spending a lil $ for in-game gold is worth it especially since you can play all of their games without spending a penny. Please keep up the great work! Love the games and keep em coming!

Game stew and ravenous games are 2 great companies that we look forward to buying there games they never disappoint and have great games, we’re mainly a pc gamer so our standards are high, we love this game a lot of people are saying things are like its imbalanced no! This game is perfect in fact we beat it on every character, free to play, wise and it was enjoyable! To GameStew: Please make more games like this its stupendously amazing and we would definitely buy it!!!!

Within 5 minutes, you have the chance to be plagued by monsters that easily overpower your new born hero and somewhat powerful ones. Consider the fact that while you can potentially get 9 or 10 attack near the start of the game, some enemies start with 9 attack as their base + whatever their dice roll is. There is no way of making progress once they appear.

We always enjoy Game Stew games. We really like exploring their gameplay systems and getting lost in the atmosphere created by the music and stylized retro graphics. Took us a bit of time to fully wrap our head around the gameplay and economy of resources in this game, but once we did, it’s been a pleasure to work through. Still only played with one character, might try the others later, but her "roll two dice for events" has saved our life several times.

We had a blast sealing away Cthulhu :) Another excellent America by GameStew. The retro graphics are excellent and the game play was fun. We agree with the previous review that some of the text got a bit tedious, but we thought it was only a little bothersome for us, and the enjoyment outweighed it. We died many times before we found the strategy that worked. The fact that there are quite a few places where rolling a 1 can mean you’re squeezed to death and then game over means hours of play can be lost in a second which blows… But, the same thing happens in real life too, so oh well. If you liked other games by the Dev, you’ll like this one. If you haven’t tried any they are worth giving them a try :)

Cool little game. We like the board game style. Retro graphics are good even though we’re getting tired of retro graphics. Our only complaint is the same as the others, it’s too easy to die. Need to work on the combat side a little more. Other than that it’s a good time waster game.

Really challenging and addicting!

This is a great game with a ton of replay value. The old school graphics and play style fit right in with the awe inducing difficulty. The game mechanics are easy to wrap your head around with some experimentation but the fact that we could, and do, die often keeps us coming back for more. We’ll probably cry when we finally beat it and just hope we’re not in public when we do.

It’s a good game and somehow addictive. But a bug happened after our camp was destroyed and we were ambushed in the camp. No dice we can use to continue the game. Even after reloading, it happens again. It’s frustrating since we tried hard to play and managed to level up to ATK 8 and now it’s gone. Please fix the bug.

All of the Game Stew titles are great. But they all seem to suffer from unnecessarily tediously-slow game play. How many times we’re forced to watch the same animation or read the same narrative text, written letter by letter across our screen – our thumb wants to tap-to-skip, but no luck. Add this to how entertainingly* easy it is to die in these games and we have never finished a single Game Stew title. I’d love to give all of the titles 5 stars. But we can’t stand playing them. *I say entertainingly easy because we do enjoy the challenge and cold finality; this Game Stew gets right, we think.

We’ve enjoyed several of their other games, and looked forward to trying this one. We now regret it. There are too many things in the game that will instakill you with no opportunity to survive. Even if you have gold, you only get one reroll, and if you’re unlucky, then any progress you’ve made goes up in smoke. Save your time, don’t play this game. Do something more productive instead, like banging your head against a wall.

Played it for 2 hours, get turned into a sheep and die in 1 hit ( you get 1 life ). Thanks for wasting our time and enjoy the 1 star. Too many things that 1 hit kill you just because your character is male.

We like their other games but this one actually was not fun at all, we tried 4 times and all we didn’t even get passed 20 turns…

After dying four times in 20 minutes we figured there was much better use of our time. The dice mechanic, while different than their other games, means there is zero skill necessary so the game decides to kill you arbitrarily.

We have played this game so many times. We love the gameplay loop, and how we can set it down at any moment and our character wont die. We wish they would update the graphics for newer phones though; some if it is a bit blurry now that Im looking at it on an OLED screen. Also, we would LOVE to see a sequel, or a new game with a similar mechanic. Great work, yall!

For a casual old school RPG adventure game, we cannot recommend this one more highly. The game involves chance and permakills. If thats not your bag, skip this one. For us, it just makes those rare victories all the sweeter. Game Stew is one of the most unrated dev groups we know. All of their stuff is perfect for ios.

We like the concept of this game and at first really enjoyed it. But then we started experiencing how unbalanced the battles are. There is one enemy in particular (not even a boss) that starts with 9 base attack plus dice rolls. It is nearly impossible to beat him, youd have to be lucky enough to win the lottery, and he instantly kills you. Try as you might, you can never build your attack stats to a 9 base stat. If there was some kind of bonus when you died, like your stats get stronger each time, it would work. But as it is, we dont like this game anymore and deleted it, even though we bought all the IAPs. Tower of Fortune is much better, you can actually progress in that one. We dont recommend this game.

Love the board game feel and the authentic gameplay! Thanks developers!

The call game is so much fun we can’t stop playing it! However the post game is much worse than all of their other games combined :( we really hope they make an update that allows you to unlock everything simply by playing the game. We are still giving it five stars because we really like this company and we like so much of what they have done.

Fun random board game/rpg. Good for killing time. Requires strategy and thinking. If you’re willing to learn game mechanics you’ll enjoy it.

Great retro style graphics. Think Talisman: DE on a gameboy. Fun and addictive. Look forward to future updates. IAP for additional heroes. Normally, we hate everything about IAP’s but Game astew is a small company that puts out high quality games. Support this game and we hope to see more quality from this company.

A great little game. Just understand that everything is a role of the dice, so take the bad rolls in stride with the good and you’ll have a great time!

Game Stew makes some of the simplest, yet deeply-engaging games in the App Store. In our opinion, they’re one of the platform’s best developers — with a unique stylistic vision. Ancient Legacy is their best game yet. This is a completely refined experience, and perfectly executed. The perfect mix of mobile and boardgame-style RPG gaming. Get it!

This game has flaws (pointless, gender-centric insta-death, tons of randomness, a bit repetitive) but for whatever reason we’re addicted to it. Some people play solitaire or candy crush forever – this is that for us. We’ve played it through maybe 7 times now and we just unlocked all the playable characters to try and finish with each one. Fun, simple and addictive. Worth every penny.

In the vein of Talisman, a really delightful single-player RPG/board game hybrid.

We adore Game Stew and want nothing more than to love everything they put out. But, as good as this game is, the few game-play flaws detract from the overall enjoyment. The good: Ancient Legacy is a wonderful combination of board game (read: dice-based fun) and RPG (level-up to take on greater challenges, and build even better shops). The playable classes are varied and add new elements to the gameplay. A fun little game overall. The bad: there are a few gameplay flaws which are frustrating. As an example, the "switch dice rolls" mechanism sounds great at the onset, but when you have spent much time and effort creating a powerful character, you end up not being able to win in the end. There seems to be no way of countering, and you end up having no opportunity to continue forward (especially since monsters that aren’t defeated continue to plague the game). The stronger you become (which is a necessity to continue further in the game), the more assured you are to lose when your attack numbers are switched. While this may seem trite, it’s an example of ideas great in concept, but lacking in play. Final word: This is a nice middle-of-the-road game. Not bad but not great. Game Stew has nothing to be ashamed of, but the game just doesn’t rise to their normal level of greatness.

Entirely based on random luck. Constantly frustrating with no incentives to replay. All the worst parts of a roguelike without any of the good. Wish we could get our money back.

If you want a sense of being in the world of the game and like games where they don’t feel like they are on rails, this is the developer for you. Game Stew are masters at suspension of disbelief and giving you ownership of your destiny. We always feel like we can go anywhere in the world. Tower of Fortune 2 was probably our top three favorite games of all time. We just loved it! After an hour of this we are really enjoying it, but we do miss the slot reel for the random element. We felt like we still had one more element in our favor with slots, but this is still awesome. We just love these games. The other great thing about this developer is the one touch simplicity of the interface in most of these games. You are never overwhelmed by hundreds of decisions that you will find in most adventure RPGs these days. You just make simple decisions. It lets you stay in the story and ‘watch’ the events unfold. If they could only make a Lord of the Rings game we would gladly pay $40.00 for it. The type of template that Game Stew uses is perfect for casual game play hybrid RPGs. Thank you, Game Stew!!

Each of the Game Stew games retains their idiosyncratic graphical style and apocalyptic vision while introducing a new gameplay mechanic. In the Tower of Fortune games this was a slot machine mechanic within an ascending or descending Tower. In Gargoyle Ruins this was a Game & Watch mechanic within a dungeon. War of Eclipse features flying ships battling Evangelion-esque angels using a guage mechanic. In Devil Shard you battle waves of enemies using a match-3 mechanic. Ancient Legacy introduces their most non-linear progression yet through the tabletop boardgame style and dice gameplay mechanic. Your hero advances along the perimeter of the board within an invisible or transparent series of squares. Each of the elements of the ornate border represents a unique area of its own with several possibilities that can occur depending on the random roll of the dice. You first role to determine how far your character moves. From the designated square you then role to determine the event that will transpire and then role again to determine the outcome of the event or battle. Events are very similar to those found in Tower of Fortune 2 but seem to us to include more narrative-centric occurrences related to the location. (Familiar iconic foes such as the Scum Family also make an appearance.) From the starting board you have access, depending on where you land, to different game boards each with their own unique missions and narratives. Each square of each different location seems to provide unique opportunities and secrets. Combined with the randomization of the dice mechanic this makes for a tremendous amount replay value. Ever since the original release of the very well-received Tower of Fortune, we have been a big fan of Game Stew and continually surprised and delighted by their creative series of games. Much thanks to the developers for continuing to make such unique and enjoyable games!

Game Stew continues to make unique, original, great games… Just a bit disappointed in the amount of IAPs this time around. You only get two heroes and the rest need to be purchased. Premium apps should at least have the option to earn these types of items in-game.
