Charterstone: Digital Edition Reviews

With the most recent software update, every time we try to go to the online Lobby the game crashes.

Bought to play with our partner, but the game continually restarts every time we enter the Lobby. Would like our money back.

Really nice digital version of a solid worker placement legacy game. Would be 5 stars if you had the option to create your own map from scratch for single games, but the campaign was fun to play through.

Thus game used to be fun until online play stopped working in the middle of a campaign. It is now impossible to log in and play. Has the app been abandoned by the developers?

Bought to play with friends across the country. Super excited for a digital legacy game. Tried to play for the first time and the game crashed an unbearable amount of times before we bagged it. Curious if others have had the issue. We tried a combo of stream and iPad, so maybe that was the issue. Want app to work because the game looks great.

We bought your game and a month down the road you are going to force a data collection policy on us? We dont agree and we cannot play the game?

This is a gorgeously realized version of the cardboard game, with nice UI, plenty of cute animations, and pretty seamless online multiplayer. Theres definitely a learning curve, but once you start to dig in theres a very deep strategy game here, with lots of twists and turns as the campaign plays out. Nicely done. The digital format is great because it allows you to try the different charters to learn how they play out. Async is a great way to pass a long quarantine with friends, as long as people are patient. Definitely not a quick game.

See original review below. We were so excited about them fixing the crashes that happened multiple times per game, until we realized that the fix was to keep us from playing the game at all! Latest update will not do anything other than shutting down the game. We are sick of this and wish there was a way to get our money back. DO NOT BUY THIS GAME! Original review here; we bought this game after playing it with our son but using it on our iOS 10 iPads it crashes three or four times per game. Also, the game is rather slow and clunky in its operation requiring unnecessary steps. Overall a great concept, but needs polished significantly.

Played a full campaign with zero bugs on our iPhone 11. It seems if you have an older iOS device you may run into problems. We suspect this may have something to do with certain SDK elements not present in older iOS systems.

We had never played the physical game, so this was all new to us. We enjoy the developing story and the on going game with our game night bros. We learn by watching and our experience has been so fun. We learn every turn and genuinely enjoy coming back for our turns. Thanks!

Quality board game and made with panache, but sadly it was stuck midcampaign, where the same game is being played over and over again (where you have to clear perils for the king). Not sure why it stopped advancing but we did manage through repeated plays to advance so perhaps it was a temporary bug or due to some edge case in the outcome of our first attempts to play. We did finish the campaign. Enjoyed it a good deal. We would recommend wholeheartedly except for the concern of bugs that can halt progress inexplicably.

Updated to 1.1.1 and now we can’t run the game at all. Had no problem before update.

For those unfamiliar, this game is BEST played as a 12 game campaign. It can certainly play as a stand-alone single game, but the full enjoyment (to me) comes from the campaign mode. More on this later… As far as the app, we’ve seen a lot of people complaining about it being buggy and crashing.. We bought this 4th of July weekend and havent encountered any bugs or crashing yet. We’ve played a full campaign (12 games) on our iPad mini and was delighted at how smooth it ran. There is a LOT of interactive info on your screen. As mentioned, we’ve been playing on a small tablet but would imagine its a bit cramped on a phone screen. Everything on the screen is interactive, but it will be a bit daunting if youre a new player. They have a tutorial but there is a lot of nuance so Id recommend reading the rulebook online somewhere. Reviewing the game itself, you can find tons of reviews on Amazon/BGG for the Charterstone Board game that will give you lots of info as to why this is such a great worker placement game. Fun little twists and rule additions throughout the campaign keeps things fresh and fun. The app is particularly great because, unlike playing IRL, the app takes care of all your bonuses. No more aw man we forgot when we use the green charter we get an extra coin. The app handles all bonuses and glory/capacity for you; its amazing!!!

We’ve really enjoyed playing Charterstone. The tutorial does an okay job but we do feel like some things get left out of the explanations. Im not one for playing online much and we found the AI to be a fun opponent. Im looking forward to starting a new campaign and seeing what new strategies pop up.

We have an older iPad (5 years, iPad Air). App crashes every few minutes, in seemingly no pattern. It does remember our place, but takes a bit to reload after each crash. Also, we never played the board game, it is a bit difficult to learn, even with tutorial.

This app has so many bugs. It plays so slowly. You have to sit and wait for each opponent to take their move. Then every 5-10 min the game crashes. So you have to reboot, wait for it to load up, wait for the opponents to take their turns, and then you can go. A 20 minute game can take up to an hour to play when the app crashes so often. Trying to play Game 4 of the campaign and the app has crashed 6 times already!

Cant go more than 60 seconds without it crashing.

Yeah, there are a few bugs but theres been a lot of updates recently which shows their dedication to getting it right. This is probably our favorite digital game, the graphics, sound, and animations are perfect IMO. Keep up the hard work!

Bug fixes have been discovered since release and many have been fixed. As a small indie developer, Acram does really great work and Charterstone is no exception. Im sure additional updates will come, but as is the app is a pretty darn good implementation of the physical edition.

Played the hard copy years ago (which made playing this game a lot easier). Picked this up as a good way to play again. Havent had crashing issues so far. touch wood

Overall love this digital version. The look and feel of the game is spot on with what we would want. We especially like the sounds and music. Graphics are simple with just enough motion to look like a living village. The game still has some issues, may need to restart from time to time but nothing terrible. Just needs a little more polish to be perfect.

Running on an older iPad Mini, but we run other games no real issue. Played for about 5 minutes and game trashed twice, after maybe three turns each time. Even without the crash issue, the game lacks several features, such as the ability to see available buildings, an ability to see what the buildings do, and doesnt tell you what you need to accomplish to win. So, without the crashes, its still only a three. $10 wasted on a game worth not even half that.

We dont think we’ve been able to compete a single multiplayer game. It freezes at various points. We lost one player we think because of syncing problems between platforms when android version had an update. Now Im faced with no options even though its our turn. We receive no reply to developer feedback in game. Against AI seems to work, but we bought this because we were in the middle of an in-person game before COVID19 hit and we thought we could play together this way. Im asking for our money back at this point.

Overall the game is fun, and is well designed. However there are still some serious gameplay bugs, such as when picking which minions to keep from the previous game it lets us pick from all players’ minions instead of just our own. Also when determining which player had the most influence at the end of the game to decide on a new rule it has sometimes picked an AI player with lower influence than we had. The new rule introductions are also not always clear. For example, the rules don’t really tell you what the sky islands do or what happens when you place one. This makes the game kind of frustrating at times.

For the amount of money this game costs, we would expect it to work much better. There are many $1.99 games in the App Store that work perfectly fine. This game keeps freezing. It incorrectly tells multiple players that its their turn, so its very confusing. Our team is halfway through the campaign, and none of us are able to move forward. We will have to abandon the game and start over, which is very frustrating. There are also a lot of unnecessary actions that the player has to take, like confirming that their turn is over. When we run out of things to do, the game should automatically move to the next player. This extra confirmation adds waiting time to the game because people forget to do it at the end of their turn.

Overall, great. Charterstone is a fun game and it can be hard to get real people together for a legacy campaign (especially now). The game is good but has a few faults. It can be hard to see exactly what buildings do (you can view from individual charters but this doesnt seem intuitive). Also, game continually crashes at start of game 9 when we try to choose Coach persona (I am grey charter if this matters). Edit: Chose a different persona and the game loaded fine. Finished the local campaign and am now playing an online multiplayer campaign. At game 3 and going well so far.

Overall, we love the game and the digital edition. But there are a few niggling bugs. [SPOILER] we just finished the game where you roll the Charterstone when using a building in another player area and if either you or the owner of the building is rolled you each get a point. That definitely did not work correctly, as grey and we (red) got points when we rolled yellow, and at least three times we missed points when we did roll one of the correct colors. Would have been very confusing for a new player.

Havent had any problems until starting game 9 we are stuck on the load screen. Was excited to see the patch but it still wont load our game 9. Only problem we have had so far. Love this game.

Im hopeful for the latest fixes to help, and they did get us out of a previous error, but now our challenger is stuck in a loop selecting companion using a windows tablet PC. FYI. Were finishing round 5, ready to move on to round 6.

This app is true to the board game and almost everything you could want from a digital version–Little animations, smooth transitions, satisfying die rolls etc. It also has the negative things you might expect from an app–bugs! We were able to finish a local game but am stuck on the first turn of an online game… We entered our charter name then a day later it said it was our turn but we cant do anything. We tried naming again and it crashed.

The game has a lot of bugs, making it almost unplayable as intended. We opened a box, received a building, built up the resources to make it, and then as it was built, the screen flashed, replaced the building with a weaker one, and then reset just our progress to the start of the game. Now we have three other players just stomping us while we try to recover.

We were incredibly excited to play the digital version of the game, since our real life game was only halfway through (its hard to get six players together at times). We love the real life version, but the higher price tag made us hesitate (higher when compared to other digital board game versions). We started and was excited, the tutorial was lacking, but we knew how to play from the real version, the graphics matched those of the actual game and were beautiful, but the game crashed after a few rounds. When we reloaded, it crashed again after another round or so, and finally, when we went to open it up and reload the saved game, it stopped loading entirely. The loading bar stays at 0% and doesn’t move. Incredibly disappointing, and we would not recommend this game to anyone until these bugs are worked out.

Our campaign is locked because we cant pay for an action. Basically we are halfway through paying to build a building, but cannot finish action or restart turn. Restarting does not help.

Currently, when we try to load our current local campaign on game 6 or 7, it spins endlessly at 0% loaded.

Until there is more fixes wait. 3 games played yesterday and all glitched out. Fun.

Overall, great port of a game we really enjoy. Its got some odd things about the UI but we’ve enjoyed it enough to play 11 games of a solo campaign in the 1.5 weeks since release. BUT it has a lot of bugs and feels like it needed to be much more thoroughly beta tested. Our campaign is frozen because we maxed out all Glory on Game 11. We’ve had a one-off game freeze too. The patch lists show the devs are hard at work to fix it, but this game was not ready for a full launch. We’ve helped out with several beta tests, these things should have been caught and werent. Ill gladly revise our review once they get the kinks worked out. Theres a lot of potential that is being wasted due to inadequate testing. We look forward to playing the finished product with friends. Hopefully they release multiplayer campaign mode too.

So we enjoy the game a lot, but the bugs are bad. We ended up losing an online game we were playing (as in we couldnt move from a spot at the end so we just deleted and did a new game), and right now one of our local games isnt loading. Its fun, but the bugs need to be worked out.

We cant tell if its an acceptable port of a terrible game, but we could not figure out what was going on. Played entire campaign randomly and did fine. Wish we wouldnt have purchased.

We keep getting soft locks in single player campaign. The game stops on an ai turn and won’t continue, and start over doesn’t even work. When it does work new game mechanics seem to have no explanation available. We eventually figured out how peril worked, but we couldn’t find it in the help. But we see a lot of potential once the bugs are ironed out.

We are glad they made a digital version of this game and its very pretty, but it crashed hard a couple of times, and it also contained a game-breaking misapplication of the rules (potion master gives opponent 100+ points in a game instead of 3). Hopefully a fix is on the way soon.

Unfortunately we cannot finish the first game of our campaign as the game crashed mid game. We fully rebooted our iPad thinking this would correct any issue but now the game loading screen is stuck at 0%. Would like to give this review more stars but cant recommend until this bug is corrected.

Great game thanks for bringing this digital as we loved the board game!! You have also been fast to respond on FB to whats going on and getting bugs fixed!! Thank you!!!

Advancement pile and mat are empty and it wants us to choose a card (another player triggered a robot in our charter) and wont let us finish our turn until we pick a card, which we cant. IPad version now makes it to 100% instead of hanging at 1%, but then crashes. Love this game and look forward to it being polished more. Great music and animation.

If youre a new player youre going to need to watch some videos. Theres a pastiche tutorial that explains how to use various functions, but no guide for why you might do it, any sense of strategy or any easy way to go back without just reading the rules.

This is a fantastic game. It is beautiful and the interface is very intuitive. The AI appears well done also. We would give it five stars but the campaign mode doesnt follow the rules. Between game all of the players are keeping all their resources, cards, and minions. It is supposed to be a limited number that you can bring from game to game. We are currently starting our tenth game with 23 resources, 17 gold, 4 minions, and 8 cards. This makes the game way too easy. Also our persona should give us one point per type of resource we have but we are getting one point for every resource we have. These two things make a win very easy. Please fix these bugs and we would be happy to give this app the 5 it deserves.

We cant play more than 5 minutes on iPad mini without the game crashing. It wouldnt load at all until the recent update. It works not but still has major bugs to work out. When it does work its fun, but right now cant even finish the first game.

This needed to spend more time in testing. It lags horribly and force closes when you pick your first persona when you can pick two. Repeatedly crashes and now game is stuck. Wish we had waited. Freezes mid game and you need to save close and reopen. Has potential but we didn’t know Apple had an early Access program like Steam. Update – complete game breaking bug in the final game. Play through 12 games only to find the potion maker card is broken. The AI player can use it every turn making 3 VP per turn on a single use card. Even better it locks everyone’s cards until the next income butt since he can use it every turn if you are after him in turn order you are just screwed. Complete game breaking and now we wasted hours trying to finish a campaign only to have it finish with a broken Aim winning the final game. Nice job. We want our money back. Next time you want to beta test a game do it through test flight.
