Chronicles of Crime – Entertainment Game Review
![]()
Chronicles of Crime is a Entertainment/Board/Adventure game from Lucky Duck Games Sp. z o.o., first launched in 10th January 2018.
It’s rated 12+ and currently has 78+ ratings on the App Store.
What Makes Chronicles of Crime Stand Out
This application is a digital companion for the Chronicles of Crime board game.
Using the same set of physical components (a board and cards representing locations, characters, and items), the Chronicles of Crime app lets you and your friends step into a world of mystery and play out your investigations.
Launch the app, select the scenario you want to play, and reveal a story built from your choices as you pursue your goal: uncover the clues behind the crime, chase the evidence, and find the killer as quickly as possible.
Using the game’s Scan&Play technology, each physical component has a unique QR code which can unlock different clues and events–if the players are paying close enough attention. Additional original scenarios will be available after the release of the physical game via app updates, with no new or additional physical components required.
The game’s VR experience requires only a mobile phone: Players put the VR glasses provided onto their mobile device, then raise them in front of their eyes to immerse themselves in the game's universe and search for clues in a virtual world.
Each game session should last 60 to 90 minutes, and players will find some scenarios connected to others, revealing a larger mystery to be solved…
This Entertainment game offers engaging gameplay and regular updates for mobile players.

Community Insight:
Ill admit that at first we were conflicted by this game. We purchased what we thought was a board game. But is it really a board game with an app element or is it a video game with some paper peripherals? Im still inclined to see it as more of a video game, similar to a toys-to-life game (Skylanders). It reminds us of Murder Mystery Machine which you can find on Apple Arcade, but Im sure you can think of many other mystery cop procedural games to compare it to. You investigate scenes, scan cards, read dialogue, and ultimately find answers to questions using your reasoning. Although the cards are attached to a board resembling a cork board, it helps to keep your own notebook handy. It is supposed to take 1.5 hours to play but we usually take 3 sometimes 4 hours. Smartly, like most video games, you can exit and save your progress and continue later. The preceding was all disclaimer. We rate the game highly in terms of fun. We played it for hours nonstop. Our criticism of Murder Mystery Machine was that they didnt shell out money for voice actors. On the contrary, Im actually glad Chronicles of Crime didnt do that here. Reading the text goes part of the way to reminding us that this is supposed to be a social game played in a room with your friends and NOT a video game. Play the parts yourself! Because the game also supports community-written scenarios, in future not having voice acting will prevent the custom scenarios from feeling inferior by their lack of audio recordings, although we do ask that the developers check their scenarios for typos regularly or have a report button for players when they see one. As far as the game goes, we really wouldnt change a thing. The app? At least its bug-free as of April 2021. Its missing some key features in our opinion. 1) Crucial. Landscape mode. We have a large ipad Pro with a magic keyboard stand. It opens up much like a laptop. This app only operates in portrait mode. Its cumbersome to say the least. 2)Annoying. Cards dont always scan. Sometimes you have to hold them upside down. This might take a minute. Couldnt we just tap to slide out a dialer, punch in the card number printed on the card and press the button for star/magnifying glass/person/location? Its a very old-school cop thing to do. 3) Would greatly improve actual play experience. We know youre very proud of the VR thing. We own a VR phone viewer. We would like to use it, but not at the expense of having to rely one players smartphone for the duration of the game. This game is awesome using an iPad. The only part that isnt better on a tablet is the crime scene investigation. Couldnt another player open up the same game in progress on their phone and use the viewer while the rest of the game runs on the iPad? This would also ensure that no one else can peek while the player has the headset on. Then we could all return to the playing the game on the large iPad or laptop. This would be a simple matter of two devices with the app connecting via bluetooth. The larger device would simply tell the smaller device to open up Crime Scene ## in viewer mode. 4) Wishful Thinking. Theres got to be a better way to create a notebook. Perhaps an app one could use with a template notebook in PDF that can be written on with an Apple Pencil. Or maybe one could photograph the card layout and annotate them virtually in a bubble map and link cards together with virtual colored string, label rows and link according to location, create suspect data sheets. Lets replace paper in just this one instance. Yes, this means going all in on the virtual stuff, we know, but we own two iPads, everyone here has a smart phone, and we have a cheap VR viewer headset. Lets use them all in the service of one game! That would actually be cool. Wed feel like Noir detective from the future. Thank for all the fun.
Cant seem to get the camera to work on iOS 14.4.2, not even an option to allow camera access in settings. Had to use an old phone to play this brand new game After playing on an old phone, it was a blast though. Am we doing something wrong.
Live laugh love we LOVE YOU PLAY THIS GAME HEHEHEHEHHE POOOPPPP PLAY THIS GAME OR DIE.
Great app and really fun. Got this for Christmas and we love murder mysteries so this was perfect.
Hello, we love your game, its great to play with a group of friends or family. We think we like Millennium series better than original version, however expansion pack Noir is just lovely, and we think this part is our absolute favourite. So we have a question, because we play this game in Polish language not English, do you know when or if expansion pack Welcome to Redview will be available in Polish language.
In some scenarios it tells us we need spesific cards like ?- cards dream-cards and more, and we dont have them and in the box it self it shows us the cards Im supposed to have but it doesnt shoes the ? Cards and dream cards. How do we get them.
1900 and 1400 are pretty fun and we have enjoyed figuring out the crimes. But 2400 is abhorrent with only 2 scenarios and complete with spelling errors and grammar errors. We think that 2400 has a lot of potential but when we bought it and wanted to play, we felt like we had been scammed.
The concept is fun, but the execution is a bit flawed. Used two different devices, in a well lit room, and 50% of the time the QR would struggle to read for at least 15 seconds. This is abnormal for QR.
It never requested permission and is not even an option. We have a year old iPhone on the newest software, and our husband has a brand new iPhone with the newest software. This renders the game useless to us.
We dont know if we just didnt see this option but we wish we didnt have to read what the characters are saying. In our opinion, we think it would be better if we can listen instead of reading. We do like the game a lot.
The new version never requests access to the camera! You cannot even grant it access via the Privacy menu in Settings as apps only show up after they have requested access. Help!! EDIT Found it only requests camera access during the tutorial. If you try to skip it (as we did) it will never request camera access.
Spinning bug ruined our game night.
Im unable to look at the crime scene without it bugging out and flying all over the place without moving our camera.
VR mode graphics are jittery and shaky. Makes the game impossible to play. Gotta give this 1 star for visibility even though its really a 5-star game.
Just got the game and super excited to play, but the graphics when you try to go into VR mode bug and spin constantly and you are completely unable to see anything going on. Maybe a bug introduced in IOS 14.
VR spins graphics constantly when investigating a room. Unplayable.
Great app to play with a great game. Our only request to the developers is to please add Chromecast support! We play using our large TV and currently have to use a really long cable. Chromecast would be perfect! Thanks.
A great idea, and fun while it lasted, but after you play the six scenarios the game is worthless. It seems like there should be essentially endless possibilities with the number of characters and locations and clues etc, but once youve played a story, you know what happens and all those materials are worthless now. Paying $5 for one extra round is a ripoff, especially considering how poor the grammar and spelling is in the DLC. Hoping for much more content to go with a really great concept.
Wanted to like this game, its well written and execution is nearly there. The main problem is often you will connect all sorts of information and potentially know the solution but may not know the exact steps to get there. What this game really needs is a hint function for things that are critical steps for leading to the next part. Often times you need to ask something specific to get more critical information and that one small detail can derail you. There needs to be a better solution guide too after you solve the case. Our suggestion would be specific key steps that would be green and showing if you completed it, and red if it was missed with a hint, and ???? If you didnt get that far yet like something like this below. Ask so and so about this clue (complete) Maybe you need more info at location B ???? ???? ???? This game requires too many specific steps without enough guidance or ways to ease that specificity.
This game devours your battery like no tomorrow. If you plan on playing, make sure you have at least 75% charge. App developers: if you change the design to only access the camera when needed instead of keeping it on 100% of the time, you will fix this. In an hour of playing the camera is only actually used for what, a minute? Youre keeping the camera open for a whole hour and its caused us to have to stop playing part way through because it killed our battery.
