A Glimpse into Good Sudoku by Zach Gage

You’ve never played Sudoku like this.

Good Sudoku turns your iOS device into an AI powered Sudoku genius whose only mission is to help you learn and love this classic game.

Whether you’ve never tried Sudoku, or you play every day, Good Sudoku’s elegant layout, intelligent hint system, and busywork reducing tweaks will help you play better and have more fun.

  • Over 70,000 of the highest quality puzzles you’ll see anywhere
  • Optional tools to reduce busywork
  • AI powered hint support to continuously boost your skills
  • 3 standard modes: Good, Arcade, and Eternal
  • 3 Daily puzzle modes that get harder throughout the week + global leaderboards
  • 5 levels of difficulty
  • Import your own puzzles from elsewhere in Custom mode (and share them with friends!)

We put everything we could into making the best digital Sudoku game ever released:

  • We wrote a puzzle generator from scratch to create over 70,000 of the highest quality puzzles you’ll see anywhere. We spent weeks figuring out how to generate intricate and complex puzzles you won’t find in other Sudoku apps. Our hardest puzzles require wild techniques like “XYZ Wings”, “Hidden Quadrouples”, “Jellyfish”, and “Swordfish”.

  • Most people don’t know this but Sudoku puzzles are actually generated by programatic Sudoku solvers. The fastest way to know how hard your puzzle is, or if it’s valid, is to write a solver that knows all the strategies that can try it. With Good Sudoku, we run our solver as you are playing, so if you get stuck, it can detect what you know by looking at your answers and your notes, and then help you find the next technique you need to solve the puzzle.

  • Most Sudoku games classify difficulty into vague Easy, Medium, and Hard difficulties — But what do these difficulties mean? Typically they refer to the kinds of solving techniques that are required to solve a given puzzle without resorting to guess-and-check. In Good Sudoku we aren’t vague about it at all. We lay out exactly which techniques are required for each difficulty level. Good Sudoku allows you to practice them individually outside of puzzles, and keeps track of which ones you’ve learned!

  • When we first got interested in Sudoku we noticed that a lot of players spend most of their time looking at the board and counting. On easy puzzles, this counting serves as a way to increase the difficulty by making the puzzle take longer. We know some sudoku players love the counting but we found it a bit tedious and designed some tools to alleviate the busywork. At first these tools might feel a bit like cheating, but once your mind is freed up from counting you’ll have space to see the much deeper more fascinating side of Sudoku: all of the beautiful technique structures. Freed from the burden of busywork Sudoku becomes one of the best search-style games we’ve ever played. More fun than word-searches and solitaire, high-level Sudoku is a real treat — and with Good Sudoku and a little practice, anyone can learn it!

  • We noticed when looking at other Sudoku apps although there are often daily puzzle modes, those modes never include global leaderboards. Weird! Good Sudoku remedies this problem!

  • We wanted to make the best Sudoku out there, and while we’re proud of our puzzles, we recognize that puzzles come from all places. That’s why we built a quick and easy custom puzzle mode into Good Sudoku, so if you have a paper puzzle that you’re stuck on, or you’re trying some wild variant (Like the Miracle Sudoku!) it’s easy to put it into the game, play it, and share it with your friends. If the puzzle follows standard Sudoku rules, our hint system will even help you get unstuck!

We truly hope Good Sudoku can introduce you to, or deepen your love for this great game.

See title. Its really, really great. Thanks so much for making it! Sometimes its a bit laggy when Im waking up our iPad from sleep but it works its way out after a few seconds every time, and Im sure that will be resolved (… If it isnt from the last update …) … Regardless, thats the type of bug you find after playing a game for days on end. We’ve learned more about sudoku playing this than anything else we’ve done with the game.

This Sudoku app has made it easy to learn solving techniques that have upped our game. Highly recommended! The 1.0.8 update had a freezing bug that occurred when a puzzle was completed in any hardness levels in Eternal game mode. The developer corrected this issue within one day of it being reported.

Love the game, sometimes when resuming a game though it tries to play two audios at once so you have to save and quit then go back to it again to get rid of the issue.

Was a good app until they started playing 30 second ads in the middle of a game. Screw that. Dumped.

Id been watching our wife do sudokus for years, but never saw the appeal. Good Sudokus tutorials made it easy to get started, and the techniques we cant do correctly yet have kept us hooked. We went from zero sudoku to playing multiple puzzles daily. Holy cow. Thanks!

This isnt just Good Sudoku… Its also plain good sudoku.

We’ve tried tons of sudoku apps, but this one is by far the best one we’ve used. It consistently delivers value, is entertaining, has good music, has a KILLER vibration function thats incredibly satisfying to feel (even when the app is silenced), and helps teach advanced techniques like nothing we’ve ever seen before.

This is a great sudoku app, and we’ve played it a ton over the last month. We highly recommend it to anyone who likes sudoku, especially if youd like to improve in your techniques (or if you didnt even know there ARE techniques). The only reason we didnt give this a 5 is because of a recent bug that disrupts the way we play. We love the Eternal mode, because we can roll right from one puzzle to the next, and theres a slight incentive not to use hints. But starting a few days ago, its not uncommon to finish a puzzle and see Sudoku Complete! Without any of the following stats and the button to continue. The app becomes unresponsive, and we have to close it to continue playing. The Eternal run didnt save the most recent progress, so Im back at the last puzzle we solved, and the process repeats itself. Hopefully this could be fixed soon; we love Eternal mode, and this app deserves five stars!

We really enjoy the ease of note taking in this app. Being able to highlight what we want makes organizing the numbers work in a way that helps us solve. We also appreciate the technique tutorials which is the main reason we picked up this version.

We use this app daily to do the three daily sudoku puzzles. Works great.

We enjoy the beginner series because its an easy mental workout that doesnt require any advanced methods for solving the puzzle. We usually do one per AM and on e per PM. This is as advanced as we ever plan to be. 89 YO.

Maybe Im doing something wrong, but we cant get past the cross out step in the tutorial. So, we can get to the rest of the tutorial.

We’ve completed the same puzzle three times now and, once completed we get the success page and it just freezes and never updates from there.

LOVE this game. It improves on standard Sudoku in all the right ways without changing the game itself. Plus it offers standard version gameplay as well.

Make it where it updates the puzzles you solve on different devices.

We look forward to completing the daily puzzles every morning. Its a solid app and we can tell that Im improving, noticing advanced techniques without the need for hints. The ads are gonna bother you, just pay the few bucks for the ad free version.

We have been waiting for a well designed sudoku game for years. This design is perfect! Thank you very much for making it! If you need more ideas please make a chess game next! Thank you!!

Amazing, cant say anything negative!

We’ve tried a lot of sudoku apps and this is one of the best! The app does a good job giving hints, its really helpful for learning more advanced techniques.

We like the app. We do wish there were options for font sizes. Notes are hard to read because the numbers are so small.

Love the game (so glad we paid for the full version because a lot of love clearly went into making this). Our only gripe is that we wish the in-app purchase to unlock the full game supported family sharing so that we could play this on our wifes iPad as well.

We accidentally hit cancel tutorial and could not figure how to restart the tutorial. We had to delete the app to start the tutorial again. Then we were off to the note taking tutorial l, which we got stuck in and wasnt sure what it was asking us to try and there is no next or skip. Once we started a game which felt difficult as it kept saying need to sign into Game Center. We could not figure out how to place a number in a square. Game deleted.

We love this app. Its clean and easy to use. We finished up the tutorial and realized it had a lot of features that hint and help you out. We assumed you could turn these off, but no. This app does half the thinking for you. We think they are great tools to teach sudoku, but if you really indented to make a game that really felt like playing on paper, options like focus and when you select the box it only highlights the available options would be toggle-able. If these options were optional Id update our review to 5 stars. As it is, the game is doing all the thinking for you.

Having done sudokus for many years, first on paper and then using a different app, we were very pleased to discover the teaching aspect of this app. We have improved our solve rate and no longer resort to guessing. Kudos to the Dark Cards makers for helping a 73-year-old learn new tricks.

Love the app. Would LOVE to be able to have the first click on the hint button say the type of technique for the next hint without showing the location. Just knowing that there is an XYZ wing to find would help us learn to find them.

Im bad with words but thanks so much to the creators of this app!

The leaderboards are totally useless, people are just doing a screen grab, pausing the game, then solve offline then continue and fill in…. How do we know? We did it, and still got 6th place…. Need to remove pause/save for ranked games!!!

Helped us improve our game and love game variations. Would be nice to have more stats (games played, average solve time, number hints). Global stats across each puzzle would add another level of replayability – trying to improves scores/times.

In many ways this is the ultimate Sudoku app! However, its frustrating that it usually doesnt save our achievements to GameCenter. Instead it keeps telling us we’ve hit all of the initial achievements… Like every time we finish a puzzle. Every now and then one of them will finally persist in GameCenter, but it happens like… 15% of the time? Weird.

Such a good app. We’ve been playing the game almost nonstop. However, the recent update makes it so the app crashes all the time. We open it, click on a puzzle, then the app crashes. Over and over, so we cant even play sudoku with this app anymore.

We upgraded this game because we love soduku yet Im still getting the ads! How do we fix this?

We really love this app. We think it is the best among all the ones we have. The interface is excellent. A pure example of simplicity! Updated: undo is fixed, we think. Now can anybody explain to us how those on the top of Game Center can solve these puzzles in a fraction of a second? We know there are genius out there, but being fast like that is strange. The undo function seems to be confusing and we are sure sometimes it did not work correctly. Our case is when the board is unsolvable and then recover and then undo. This seem to remove some of the fixed numbers in the grey houses.

Learning new techniques and solving ridiculously difficult puzzles! Very rewarding! Best sudoku app we’ve found, and we have tried a lot.

As a sudoku initiate, we find this app an excellent guide to hopefully someday becoming more proficient with the game. Zachs other app showed us that game design doesnt have to insult the players intelligence. The play is addictive because the more puzzles you successfully solve, the more you want to keep going. That is elegant game design. We look forward to indulging more as the app develops over time. Thank you for letting us enjoy sudoku.

Love this game but it freezes for like 30 seconds every day trying to fetch the latest leaderboard scores, its infuriating.

This is seriously our new favorite. We’ve already recommended it to so many people and we feel like we have learned SO MUCH about it! It feels so good to watch myself grow in this game and what we notice on the board now can when we started. The explanations and the use of notes are just the best. 12/10 would recommend.

Love this game, is there a way to sync progress on different devices?

This sudoku got us so interested we stoped playing our favorite games to play this so thank you for making this app.

Love everything about it. Well, almost. :-) we could really really use cross device sync. Not saving/updating progress/statistics across our iPad and iPhone kills. Id like to use our iPad at home and our phone on the go. But Im stuck with it on our phone because thats where all our streaks and stats are (and in-progress eternal runs)

This is an awesome way to learn and improve on your sudoku skills. Just dont attempt to use it on multiple devices. It doesnt sync your progress, i.e., puzzles youve completed on one device arent marked as completed on your other devices.

We have been hosed more than once by a little bug in the software. We will select a mode, like highlight or strikeout. We will then select a box and a number and it will come out of the mode. This happens inconsistently. Sometimes it stays in the note making mode, sometimes it pops out. More than once it has cost us a heart. If you can fix that we would give it a 6 or 7 stars. We’ve become so enamored of the enhanced features that we wont even play in classic mode, its just too tedious.

Finally a clean and intuitive Sudoku app! Though the app description says that app and in-app purchases support family sharing but cant restore purchases on a family iPad with different App Store account under family setup.

Best sudoku app we’ve found, but drains our phone battery quickly (even after updates) and we repeatedly run into puzzles with non-unique solutions (e.g. Where two pairs of numbers can be swapped because they line up in the same rows and columns). This is especially frustrating as the app teaches strategies that explicitly rely on eliminating possibilities that would lead to non-unique solutions. This means that for these specific puzzles, doing what it teaches you will result in being penalized and potentially losing in Arcade or Eternal mode. It also results in situations where youve made no mistakes but the puzzle gets into an unsolvable (according to its own hint function) puzzle that we have to resort to trial-and-error to solve. Despite these frustrations, it is a fun and well-designed sudoku app and we play it a lot!

As a long-time user of Enjoy Sudoku, we’ve rarely seen any other sudoku apps that come even close to its solving experience quality, teaching features, and difficulty. Good Sudoku comes very close, and it was clearly designed with the attention to detail and actual love of the game that most sudoku apps lack. In most ways the attempts to provide a more enjoyable solving experience are quite successful, and the teaching features are decent, but we do still think theres room for improvement in a few ways. The thing we most sorely miss is digit-first (or hybrid) entry: the ability to select a digit and mode, then tap multiple cells to apply it. This would be much faster (and better ergonomically) when initially looking through a puzzle, or when using patterns based on a single digitmost noticeably with advanced patterns like x-wing which span large areas. If we have to exit digit view and tap a cell, then tap again to apply a number, its hard to remember what we were doing (and just more work). Other thoughts/suggestions: – we’ve done the tutorial, but we still have a hard time seeing the use of the blue pencil > 95% of the time (its just visually distracting and makes seeing patterns harder). – Striking out a pencil mark should dim it too. Again, currently its quite visually distracting and sometimes keeps us from seeing even basic stuff like singles. – The hint lessons could use a bit more detail. For the few very advanced patterns we dont know, the hints sometimes arent quite enough to help us grasp how they work (or even just how to find them). – Would love to see a few more advanced patterns added. :)

We love the concept behind this app; its a new take on Sudoku, and makes it much faster, and lets you concentrate on the hard parts of the puzzle, and not the mechanical parts. However, the app is really deficient. Lots of crashes, progress doesnt sync on iCloud, the Daily leaderboard keeps getting reset.

This game will just tell you all the answers, and theres no way to stop it. If you click on a cell, the game eliminates most, but not all of the options, so you dont really have to pay attention in order to solve a puzzle. And if you still cant, you can turn on the auto-note feature that automatically extrapolates any piece you figure out, and eventually just fills the puzzle squares in for you. Maybe this is good for learning how to play sudoku, but it is joy-ruining for those who actually like solving the puzzles themselves. That said, its very nice looking and relatively easy to use (though we didnt like having to tap the icon once to select a tool and again to engage the tool we’ve selected.) If we could turn off the auto elimination aspect, Id give it more stars.

This is an awesome game that really teaches you how to play Sudoku. However, it crashes constantly. It crashes when you try to save and quit. It crashes when you beat a puzzle. It crashes if you try to respond to text while using the app. If you beat a non-daily puzzle, it will crash and when you reload, it most likely wont show you that you beat that puzzle because it doesnt save the progress before the crash. We loved this game a few months ago. Then an update brought all these new bugs and it looks like there hasnt been any real attempt to fix the crashing problem. If it ever gets fixed, Ill update our rating.

Very buggy. Note taking tutorial freezes and locks up. Game itself locks up sometimes. Creator wont respond to emails about it. Dont buy until things are fixed!

We bought this game thinking it was worth it. It soon started to crash. Fix this!!!!

Continues to crash after every completed or exited puzzle. Im hopeful each time an update arrives, but the bugs and constant crashing remain. Very disappointing app.
