SpellTower+ – Word Game Review

SpellTower+ Screenshot

SpellTower+ is a Word game from STFJ LLC, first launched in 2nd April 2021.
It’s rated 4+ and currently has 458+ ratings on the App Store.

What Makes SpellTower+ Stand Out

The original best-selling mobile word game, reimagined!

Pick your words wisely! As you play, more tiles rise from the bottom of the screen! It'll take all of your lexicological wits, and tactical know-how to keep your columns down. If any letters make it to the top row, it's game over.

Classic modes Daily Tower, Tower, Puzzle, Rush and Zen are all back and packed with brand new BONUS TILES that double (or more!) word values.

Joining them is the brand new Search mode, plus ExPuzzle, Double Puzzle, Bubble Puzzle, and Blitz mode!

That’s eleven modes in all!

Plus iCloud Backup, Highscores reported for games even while in-progress, detailed statistics for every mode, Game Center leaderboards, and achievements.

—————————

It’s pretty wild to be revisiting my first hit game, SpellTower. I can't believe it's almost 10 years since it released. The first iPhones it ran on had a 3.5 inch screen and 320 x 480 resolution! I literally did a double-take at that resolution when I looked it up.

A funny part about having a hit game is people talk to you about it. With SpellTower I heard about grandparents playing the game every morning to keep their minds sharp, parents playing it with their kids, expectant mothers playing it to get through morning sickness, and countless sightings of strangers playing it on subways, planes — even elevators.

I got into games because I wanted to connect with people in a positive way. I wanted to help people think critically and come away with more than they arrived with. Games felt like a way to do this on a huge scale, but the stories I heard from SpellTower players taught me that games do so much more for people than I ever expected.

I’m deeply grateful that SpellTower has been able to be something special for so many people, and I think that’s why so many people have shared it with friends, loved ones, and strangers on elevators.

Even though SpellTower is a game I made, it’s really barely mine anymore. The experiences and love I had for the game has been outstripped by its audiences a thousandfold. I thought a lot about all the experiences that people have had with the game when I was designing this new version. I hope it gives everyone who’s loved the game a reason to pick it back up again and share it amongst their friends and family.

Community Insight:

Its good us and our mom play it together and we have fun except we think names should count cause we keep forgetting that you cant do names but good overall. And a lot of people say this is a word and it doesnt say its a word but you cant do names or countries or states or cities so you should know that.

Love playing the various iterations of this game. We do have one bone to pick though. While playing one of the puzzles, the word zorse denied as real. Then tell us why its been in the dictionary since the 1800s, and Ive seen one with our own eyes+.

Please add other languages! Like deutsch. We'd love to be practicing our German vocab while playing our favorite game.

Really like this game, but its very frustrating when it gets stuck when syncing. This has happened before and now the July 5 and 6 puzzles are still syncing on July 8.

Meer is, in fact, a word. It means a body of water. Harlem Meer is one example.

Our husband and we love competing with each other at SpellTower +! Wed love it if a Spanish version were to release.

Can you guys please add a reverse button because on accident we keep lifting our finger up like we mean lift it up but what happens is we keep it on, but it just is done and we were about to do something else and it just quits.

Love this game!! Would like to turn off the sound but we cant find the setting.

Super fun, intellectually stimulating, and yet relaxing all at the same time.

Great game, love it! Could you PLEASE add a BACK button to undo your last word or a COMFIRM? Option? Our fat fingers always confirms the words before Ive made a final decision and we cant go back! Thanks- again, great game.

We play this game for at least an hour a day. We do have a feature request. It would be good if it had a dictionary and how you the definition for the words you find. Would be amazing to learn in this game as well.

We find the game fabulous as a lover of words but the challenges system fails many times with no recourse for getting your correct challenge to succeed. That fix would make this even better in our book. E.g. Our doxes challenge failed despite the following Merriam-Webster entry: verb \ dks \ variants: or doxx doxed or doxxed; doxing or doxxing; doxes or doxxes Definition transitive verb informal : to publicly identify or publish privateinformation about (someone) especiallyas a form of punishment or revenge.

Yall, even though muy is a word, this makes us go crazy. Like, there are twelve modes. Towers fine, but Im crazy about Search. Hope yall like it as much as we do.

The game isnt perfect. The word challenge process has its flaws but Ive contacted the developer and he will address your concerns. The only consistent glitch is in giving you your score on the daily challenges, at times the system needs to be reset by deleting the ap and reinstalling it.

We love this game. The different variations are great so we can change it up depending on our mood. We would love more clarity in the scoring.

Fun way to pass some time and get your brain thinking a little. Nothin negative to say about this free game.

This game is great we love it our mother likes it its just a little hard.

This game is fun and makes you think. We like the funky bass music that accents it nicely.

The thing thats great about this game is that it is a perfect challenge against yourself. It seems that there is (almost) always a solution to the tall towers, IF you can find it.

Its become a daily check in for us. Im enjoying getting better as we go and building a streak. We really wish it was easier to see the daily search grid after the leaderboard is released so we could learn from the best players.

Solitaire was getting old. This is a fun game that we enjoy. Our only critique is that Ive noticed they only give one Q X Y W Z and possibly V. We could care less about getting extra points for those letters, we just want to be able to utilize them in multiple words like the Y in gypsy or x in xerox, etc.

This is a fun great in the morning to get our mind going but this game does not let u use certain words for ex. We used the word xer which is another term for gen xer it is a noun and is in the Oxford dictionary but it did not count it. There have been problems like that. Guess maybe we are somehow smarter the this game.

Fun and addictive but there are several obvious words that this doesnt recognize even when challenged including places such as America and others that are in fact within the dictionary. How are the words determined.

After playing with multiple modes and adjusting the settings to our preference we think this game is great! Lots of game styles to keep it interesting and user friendly setting adjustments. We play it almost every night to help us fall asleep. The zen mode is our favorite.

We challenged the game when it said Sleipnir is not a word. It is a word. It is a name. It allows proper names because we also found the word Beth and it recognized it as a word. It allows some foreign words based on common English language use, Im guessing – but since its just a silly game, we are not overly disappointed. Its a truth but it doesnt make us hate it.

We love this game. It's the only thing we play. We resent the fact we're now paying $7 a month for it. There should be an option to just buy that game. We often make it in the top 250 but can't find anywhere the number of players. So of we score 177 how many people is that out of? That's an important & obvious question. Also we're tired of the same letters being highlighted every day! Q & Z. We get it, they're harder letters to use. But it seems like every day those are the letters highlighted. Also there should be some options to add a letter or something. And it doesn't recognize alot of words like places, names or common Spanish words. Even if we challenge ot will say this isn't a word. They need to expand that.

Really enjoying this game but often frustrated by its english centric leanings; seemingly picking and choosing of use of foreign words. Game accepted some basic spanish and french words but others stated as not a word. Certain words that are not actually words used in regular vernacular like doge are accepted which means that older words we dont use should also be accepted but are again stated as not a word. We would be interested to see an update of the dictionary. Until then Ill keep playing and enjoying it as is.

Hello!!! Our names Jazzy and we really like this game. Its not like most word search games we played and we like it because you can make any words you want we would recommend for anyone who likes word searches but wants to make their own words Love this game.

This is a very fun and addictive game to play. One thing that would make it whole is if the definitions of the found words poppped up when found. It would be a fun game where one could expand thier vocabulary at the same time.

Im not sure what dictionary this game uses, but Ive challenged valid words from Oxford Dictionary, and been denied. Overall, pretty solid word game.

First, this game is fun and has a great variety of modes to play. Our only gripe is that data is not saved automatically to iCloud and synced across multiple devices. You can manually back it up but if you forget, your other devices will be out of sync.

Reallottiing Tallons are not words? We know it says the app is collecting words that are submitted but theres nothing more disappointing than finding a great word and the app tells you youre wrong. Surely theres a way to expand the dictionary the app utilizes? The fact that Ive only been playing for 2 weeks and have 10+ challenges that Ive won tells us the dictionary is pretty limited. Id love to see charting for number of words challenged and won. If its there, we cant find it.

We are really enjoying this game, but the dictionary or acceptable words are inconsistent. As expected with this type of game most proper nouns are not excepted. But was disappointed that when we challenged alpine as a word (which it is), it rejected it, but then allowed Czech. But will still keep playing! Just looking forward to revised dictionaries. Would also be fun to include a mode that allowed proper nouns OR themed boards (e.g., boards that only accepted geographic terms or something). Regardless, its totally fun.

We like the game, and am aware than this is a very silly complaint but we would love if there was a sound off option. We normally play this game before bed with a YouTube documentary playing in MiniPlayer in the corner of the screen, and the sound of the game is very loud. Nothing too big, keep up the great work :).

Fun word game to unwind with, but the dictionary is pretty bad. Asia isnt a word.

First, if you love words, you should give this a try. Its challenging and addictive, especially if you just want to unwind after a long, crazy day. We recommend it to everyone. With that said, the ability to challenge whether or not a word is real is frustrating. We found tendre during a game, and while an online dictionary admits it is archaic, it is in fact a real word that still gets some use in historical fiction. This game doesnt recognize the word, and leaves us wondering if Ill run into other words like this as we go along. It also seems to accept some proper nouns but not others. All-in-all though, still a fun game.

We love this game but the challenge thingy needs a answer but ton because we put a real word and it didnt say it was real.

Love the daily search game. Blitz. A few. Not so much the tower game for us. Our daily results have stopped syncing, though. Kind of a drag. Any help.

Implement an Undo button/feature. Also, some accepted words – may not be actual words.

We absolutely love the game! Very challenging! However it needs a dictionary update as there are words which are rejected that shouldnt be.otherwise game play is fantastic.

The gameplay itself is simple and fun but the game needs work, especially the word submitting system It had told us Saturn and Verona were not words when they most certainly are. We also completed an eleven letter word and did not get the achievement for doing so :( but like we said the gameplay is fun but updates would help make the experience a little more fun for the people who like to get achievements and such.

The game is amazing but some words dont look like they exist for example the word TOEA doesnt make sense but its a word in a different language that means penny . We would give five if they would have made it easier too understand but we still really like the game.

Lots of interesting game modes to mix it up. However, we got a nearly 3,000 point word in Tower Mode and realized it doesnt matter how creative we get with finding words, its all about combining the multiplier tiles to get a high score in Tower Mode. If you cant knock it out of the park with a multiplier tile (or two) theres basically no incentive to continue a round and there are only three multiplier tiles. On scoring, it explains how words are scored in the tutorial but it would be nice to see each individual letters value on the tile so we know exactly what to aim for. Instead you have to outline a word first to see its total value.

Great game, longtime fan. One frustration: challenge button is useless when you type in a word that is a real dictionary word and it reads that it isnt a word. We setup an entire board for this one magnificently huge word and then the system doesnt read it as a word. Score is blown up because everything we worked for on the board is blown up and you cant go back so everything we did is now irreversible so you get screwed. 30 minutes wasted. Not very rewarding. What dictionary do you use, why are basic words not in the system.

Enjoy playing it. How do we turn off haptic feedback.

We love the game. It helps us unwind at the end of the day. The only thing we wonder is what dictionary sources they are using? We challenged a word Europe but it said it wasnt a word when clearly it is. It has happened to us a few times before this incident too where words that are actually words, are not words.

First, the positive: the games are fun and challenging. We use them to unwind after long days and double shifts in the hospice and hospital fields. We really like the variety of ways to play, too. Theyve really thought through variables to make games challenging and fun in different ways. Im better at some than others. But we work at all and am getting better. We really appreciate them for making this game. We even enjoy the subtle jazz music background. Some issues needing addressed: 1. In Rush/Double modes it seems that clicking on letters is disabled BEFORE the top squares cross the red line. Your game ends prematurely. 2. Accessing game rules should be easier and always accessible 3. Sometimes words are legit words but counted as wrong. You can theoretically make challenges but in our experience those are always declined: no, thats not a word when in most cases it really is. Its a waste of time and leaves one a little frustrated. 4. We deleted the game one time, but after redownloading it, we had to go through the tutorials again even though it had saved our scores/rankings and sign in data. Overall, props to the developers.

By far our favorite game. The haptics make it more engaging. It accepts so many words count (like cuss words!) that arent included in other word searches. The latest update, though, requires an additional tap on the word to register it and Im not at all crazy about that.

This game can be rather fun for nerdy word sleuths like ourselves, but the word choice/dictionary options can be incredibly frustrating. Sometimes Ill just try something if Im desperate for a move & am shocked that it worked but the most annoying thing is (at least in the puzzle version) that there will be times when say a six-letter word will be denied for being too short but then a random three-letter word will work (& even if you can extend that three-letter word to something longer, that will be denied)!!! We just dont understand the logic in that at all, & adding to the grumpypants frustration is the fact that theres no explanation or rule book to explain why that is the case. Writing this review is the only option we have.

Play all the time, but needs update for Dynamic Island.
