Player Experience Highlights

Community Insight:

For 9×9 games on the go, GoQuest is the best app! We never have to wait long for a match and there is a wide variety of player strength.

Ive had this after all of 15 minutes and we cant believe how many different things we found wrong with it. First of all, it matched us up against a player who is 25K better than us, which is just a waste of our time, there are plenty of other places we can play if we want to get smashed flat by a far superior player. We tried to file a report about it, and the report screen is totally broken It lets you include about a sentence and a half before it complains that the details are too long, and then, it kept just erasing the details before we can submit them, its totally buggy. It doesnt explain why you win or lose things, and the tsumego problems we cant even figure out how to do, theres no instructions or controls, and it occasionally flashes things at you in Japanese only, which we dont speak. Update:we continued playing this in the hopes it would get better, and only found more bugs and problems. First of all, it frequently puts down a piece next to where you tried to put the piece down, often cost you the game. Yes you can turn on double tap This doesnt help the problem, it happens the same once you learn to habitually double tap as it did when you were single tapping. They also say its beginner friendly but then they make you play not just against an opponent, but against the clock: if you dont play expert level and know how to divide your attention to both watch the clock and think through the game at the same time, and not just win but win quickly, you will often lose by running out of time, which is nothing but frustrating since it has nothing to do with how well you play and certainly gets in the way of learning how to play well. Also until you figure out how to turn the bots off, which is hidden in the unexplained settings, youll wind up often playing bots which are weird and idiosyncratic players and will teach you terrible habits that will cost you when you start playing humans. And the problem where it keeps matching you up with players who are much, much, MUCH better than you never goes away. Also, they have a TON, we mean a LOT, of really great players who dont play very often so theyre ranked very low, and as you proceed through the ranks, you get penalized more if you lose to a low ranked player, so as soon as you begin to get ahead, they match you with an expert player who is said to be 25K or 30K, but they are incredibly strong and will smash you flat in no time, and you will lose maximum ranking points for losing to this supposed low ranked player, because their ranking system is inaccurate and lets extremely advanced players remain at much too low ranks. And no matter who youre playing, wind only give you a few points, but each loss costs you many points, so if you are trying to advance in rank you will not proceed, you will struggle a very long time to get ahead and then lose all that progress in just a couple of games. Plus they dont ever allow you to know what the komi is, so you cant tell if youre winning, or strategize to deploy your pieces effectively if youre just trying to win. And some games end in a draw or tko, neither pf which exists in Go! They just made them up for this app for some reason. Theyre against the rules. Its all incredibly frustrating, weird, annoying, and, put it all together, we would recommend beginners stay far, far, far away from this app. We found it an incredibly frustrating experience and its making us hate the game of go.

This new version is ugly. Why did you change? The sound to start, the dimmer display when pass, please go back to the last one.

Absolutely fantastic app, any potential users download it now. If we may suggest one feature to the devs, we would really like GoQuest to save one game per player based on strongest opponent ELO that they beat. This way you can see at least one good game if someone is inactive for a while, while now the server just deletes every game. Also, if we get that sweet sweet victory against an 8dan we wouldn't have to worry about archiving it somewhere else, but could look at it with GoQuest itself.

When we try to make a tournament it wont let us because there is something wrong with the name and we used four random characters multiple times. Help.

Good app Has weird whispering in the the music, a bit creepy.

Very friendly interface. Train w bots then attack your opponents.

Ive been playing on go quest for about a year now. From our very early learning days and on it has been enjoyable. One of our favorite parts about this app is as Ive learned more and more, there are always players available around our level to meet and challenge things Ive learned. (we will say, we mean real players. Disabling bots in the settings menu once youve gotten the basics down is great.) The one and only change we would make LISTEN UP MIND WALK! would be adding a chat feature. We cant tell you how many times Ive had a very enjoyable game with a player and wished we could send a message thanking them for the game, or complimenting plays they had made. That being the only thing we would add, this app definitely deserves 5/5 stars. Thanks for making such an accessible and fun go platform.

This helps us play with some people we know this is AWSOME.

GoQuest is probably the best server on the phone right now, but one thing we'd like to see added is an easy way to copy the SGF from the app. Right now we have to copy the text from sharing, select from that text the URL, navigate to that URL, then export, which can take a few minutes. Having the export feature in the app would make everything easier.

Great app decent AI however 19×19 gameplay is locked.

Hope more people come to play and the developer can expand the functions of the app.

Halfway though our first game a pop-up ad came up and ended it? No thank you.

We dont believe the scoring at the end is always correct, which is frustrating. We believe there should be a transparent explanation of the score after a game, and an option to select dead stones with your opponent once both players pass: features that currently dont exist. We wish there were also options to change the time controls and Komi instead of having only 1 preset option per board size. We enjoy the snappy sound effects of the stones when they are placed, and the app is simple to use (although made for an older iOS). There are a few styles of stones/boards to choose from which is nice.

Sorry, we will be uninstalled this game today. There have been way too much cases where we loss the game simply because the use of Chinese rule.

Funny…we read some reviews and we wonder if theyre playing the same app. Im a beginner and Ive played maybe 60? Games on this program AND unlike many of the other sites mentioned this app is so EASY and fun to use. Im at 12Kyu and Ive had our head handed to us by much better players (thats how you learn) and we appreciate the dumb bots…a little positive reinforcement isnt that bad…thats what GoQuest has that the others dont. We have em all and as a beginner we keep coming back to GoQuest because its so easy to use and we get plenty of games. Addicted to the quick 13X13 games.

Reliably gets us into an enjoyably game. No settings to fret over. We wish we could disable ads, but overall a good app.

Best go game for tactile and satisfying go competition around the world.

We play 9×9 on our phone all the time with GoQuest. Its one of our most used apps. Starting a game is fast. There are plenty of players at all skill levels, and some bots too.

This is one of the best Go apps, by far, especially if youre into small boards! However, it does have intrusive ads, and no way to get rid of them. This is the only app Id be willing to pay for to remove ads, but Id be more than happy to pay a monthly subscription fee to support the app. However, no such option exists. As such, its incredibly obnoxious to use, hence why Im knocking a star of our review.

The matchmaking and the games seem quite fun. Its nice to hop into a really quick 9×9 match. We really REALLY want to be able to pay to get rid of the intrusive ads in this app, as it would make it much more enjoyable. This matches on this app are very short, and you can decide you want to play and be matched up and finished in 5 minutes or less. Thats really great! Whats not great is the automatic scoring that happens which isnt super transparent. We think its Chinese rules with a Komi of 7? Id really like to see how the computer counted things (e.g., with white or black squares overlayed on areas that were considered points for each player). The instructions for the app recommend leaving no stones in your territory, which might help with the automatic scoring. We were upset about the scoring at first, but it seems like it might be okay if you keep that in mind, despite it not being very transparent. Overall its a bit of a frustrating mixed bag! On the one hand the app is pretty ugly and riddled with ads that we find obtrusive, but we would also be lying if we didn't say it was the most fun we have had on 9×9 games (especially after disabling matching with bots). Its just so quick to get into a game and as a result Im playing a lot more.

Ive used this app for several years. In terms of playing Go, it is wonderful: It has customizable graphics, Chinese rules with 7 komi, the option to play 9×9 or 13×13, and simple matchmaking. Our big complaint, and why we have deleted it from our phone, is the ads: They are videos that play sound (and cut off anything you might be listening to), and sometimes they dont give you the option to X out until they finish. We also strongly suspect that, because this app hijacks the sound system, it has given our phone problems making and receiving phone calls. This is inexcusable. We wish they would either go back to static, soundless ads or give us an option to pay money to get rid of ads altogether, because the game itself is everything we want in a Go app.

Ive been using this app for about 7 years. Its not that great in our opinion which may beg the question: if we dont like it, why am we still using it after 7 years and the answer is basically twofold: 1) we want to improve our game and this is the only mobile app you can use and play against real people and 2) basically we just cant stop. They could add more features we think like chat or request undo or add friend or something we dont know. Go is a pretty adversarial game and maybe theres just no way around that. Ie, its hard to make the app upon which the game is played a nice place to spend screen time. Our 2 cents.

We have been using this app for 4 years, enjoyed.

Full of bugs. Forced to view full screen video ads. Cannot play 19×19 until reach 1250 in 13×13 or 9×9, while this is almost impossible, because most players are 2kyu~1D. Ruined fun of go. Better try other app or website.

Only thing we have reviewed really Good multiplayer go. Got a lot of cool features and very fun.

This is our most fun app. We play it every day and am addictive it.

Bots are horrible and the actual players are quite godly at the game. It can be irritating for the middle ground players.

There is no way to change your profile on the App??? Where do you enter your user code.

Play is fun. The app copies from your clipboard for no apparent reason, which seems pretty sketchy.

We tried to play on 19 by 19 and we need to earn some points before we can playing on 19 size board. But to earn the neccessary pts we need to win against 3 dan 1 dan 2 kyus? What is the purpose of blocking us from playing on 19 by 19 board.

Will 19×19 ever stop being under maintenance.

Im new to Go and trying to learn against other new players. This has us playing players way beyond our skill level. And none of them allow the use of handicaps. Its extremely discouraging playing a game and losing five times in a row with your best point spread 60. We think it should have an option to not play against higher rated players if they dont allow handicaps. Because we know Im going to lose a lot as a beginner, but Im not learning how to get better.

The rules section has no information for beginner players. Its obvious that English is a second language so it may be as simple as them having someone modify those pages but its also clear that whoever wrote them is making the assumption that you already know how to play.

We imagine this app would be good if the games didnt lose connection constantly eat up you time without showing you where your opponent moved has moved. You can be crushing your opponent but lose due to time running out because the app runs the timer even when you can see where the opponent has moved and cant move yourself. This really should be fixed.

Wrongly changed lopsided win to lost. It happens again today. GoQuest has trouble with Alive-in-seki. Please fix it. A Life death bug happened on 1-21-2019. Then we will give five stars.

This program let you play real people and you dont have to do anything fancy just hit one button that says play and within a few seconds somebody from anywhere in the world response and your game is on it is awesome and you can play at 9 x 9 game in just five minutes you can play when youre busy.

Easy fast way to play however we also think there needs to be a better time warning. We really like this app and its immensely improved our strength. Time and design is something to be improved though. P.S. We love the watching and how you can choose specific openings to watch.

First of all, great game! Finally a deserving Go game on iOS. Two suggestions for developers: 1) Whenever a game ends and it says you win or you lose – could you break down the score? Im a rookie and we would like to know how many points we got for captured pieces, territories and etc 2) It would be great if we could add a person as a friend and play together (in addition to random online opponents).

Simple but great app. It has never crashed and works perfectly.

Great for fast games. Wish they had a rematch feature :).

Go Quest has a good concept of focusing on human to human matches and its rating system has both a point rank and a Kyu level, which is nice. The interface of the gameplay is easy to use. We even stopped playing Clash Royals because of this app! However, we really would like to see some changes: 1) add warnings when the time runs below 30 secs and 10 secs. There have been too many times when we were winning but then lose a game on time 2) make the our Page easier to navigate. The arrows are confusing and we have no clue what each thing leads to unless we click through all of them. 3) this is minor, but the app initially looks like its a personal project and not a company-made product. We think if there is a little polishing done, it would really increase the number of users. But overall, its one of the best go apps out there and we highly recommend! (As long as the time issue gets resolved).

Wish they'd make the board use all available screen space. Huge empty margins.

Im not one whose intimidated by our opponents strength, but there needs to be better matchmaking. Ive been paired with single-digit kyus more than double-digit kyus with all of our human matches, and we lose the rank points we would have earned upon losing? There is a huge skill-gap between sdks and ddks, so this is a huge oversight.

Its nice because a lot of people are available to play however you will find yourself outmatched a lot. We never really play anyone that isnt way better than us and its hard to learn from getting killed every game. No filter or way to play people of similar kyu rating.

Good Game to keep your skills sharp against variety of good players.

Great app, does what's promised well.

Finally an online go app thanks.

This is a fantastic mobile Go game – it controls all options (Komi, time, territory, etc.) and gears it towards quick and fair play. Easy to find a game at any time. All around great app.

GoQuest seems to always have plenty of players of all skill levels waiting to play at any time. The UI is easy to use. We've significantly improved at 9×9 go from GoQuest.
