A Glimpse into Guardians: Unite the Realms

Can you save the Guardians and their Realms?

There are many Realms other than ours, each with its own Guardian that has protected it for millenia. But now, evil Scorians have begun to trap the Guardians and have sent the creatures of these Realms into hiding. It’s up to you to inspire the creatures to return and fight back against the villainous invaders! Unlike other games, the only way to collect pets is to do real life activities that are meaningful for you in order to inspire them to join you! Once you’ve inspired pets to join you, it’s up to you to send them on missions to train them in skills they can use to fight back and retake their Realm!

Build a customized team of pets and send them on missions to train their various skills, while upgrading and customizing your own abilities. Be sure to collect useful items and cosmetic outfits to help your pets on their quest! You’ll have to carefully manage your teams of pets in order to stop the Scorians and free the Guardians!

The Guardians is not only a game about collecting and training pets. It is a tool you can use to build the skills you need to fight depression and improve your wellbeing. Developed in the Affective Computing Group of the MIT Media Lab, The Guardians is a unique tool created using psychological techniques of mobile games to reward and encourage healthy habit formation and teach skills that are invaluable toward fighting depression. Restarting our phone fixed it for now, but today after being in the fire area for a couple days we were unable to close quests in the app, whether by the ok buttons or the X in the corner. To close them we had to restart the app, but the same problem would happen. Also couldnt turn down dressing up after finding clothes items, but that problem doesnt always happen at the same time. Cute app otherwise!

We switched phones and we reinstalled this app. We absolutely love it. First time we left a review for them on Android, it wasnt too good and we sounded kind of angry, but the team was super nice, they contacted us and we exchanged e-mails with suggestions. They were incredibly nice and we are so happy we reinstalled it and we get to replay it again. We wish there was a way to support its developing, maybe creating some special outfits that you could unlock for a small price like 0.99. We are pretty sure people would like to purchase that to help the adventure go on in this wonderful realm. It has a wonderful way of helping you do daily tasks without feeling any pressure and we feel like it taught us that on a personal level also. To just be thankful for what we achieved that day, even if small. It has really helped us keep motivated and on track lately and its such a fun experience! We really recommend it as an unusual and creative motivating app! ^^

Im not a phone game-player, but as an advocate for mental healthcare we were interested in seeing how this one works. We really like it, the adventures are inspiring and the pacing is good. That is, up until you finish the first chapter! We wonder what the reasoning is for the 12-day pause between chapters (you are actually locked out from progressing from chapter to chapter for a set number of days once you finish!) we found that this really slowed the momentum we had gained in thinking about daily self care (adventures!) and what was working for us. We bet that once our 12-day wait is up, we will have forgotten how much we enjoyed this game so far. If there is a therapeutic reason we are so curious! (And, like many others, we would love to be able to write in our custom adventure. For sufferers of anxiety like us, there may be adventures like mediation or deep breathing that are effective in daily care and would be great adventures to keep track of). This is a great start and Im so glad there is something like this geared toward mental and behavioral health. We hope this game keeps improving!

If what other reviewers have said is true, that when you go from chapter one to two, you lose everything and have to start all over again, Ill likely delete the app. When we got duplicate pets, we renamed the higher level one with a related name. Mossly became Mosslydead (The Princess Bride reference.). Im very attached to Mosslydead. Now Im in a 12 day lock until chapter two becomes available. We had been stocking up on luck pops, stamina buns and the like, in anticipation of having them in chapter two. Now, we dont see the point in doing so. Which makes us see no point in playing. Ill likely just write down a list of suggested activities from the app and do two or three a day. We were really enjoying this game but Im preparing to be disappointed.

How often will new chapters be released? Iwent through the first 3 chapters quicklu.

This game is great, its really helped us feel a sense of purpose. We also love the visuals and soundscape, huge kudos to everyone involved in making this come to life. One thing we would like is the ability to complete more than one task per day. We feel very motivated to do the thing we choose, but we struggle to feel motivated to do everything else we need to do in a day. Our only solution is to make a to-do list and choose the custom mission option, making its completion our goal. The problem is that the task is suddenly much, much larger and overwhelming. Even if there were only one big reward per day, having little rewards (maybe stamina??) for subsequent tasks would personally help us a lot. Anyways, we love the game and Im really grateful for everyone involved in making it. Thank you very much!

We enjoy this game so much, & we really hope more levels/stages become available soon. It really is a nice way to gently encourage good habits.

We really love this app. Even when Im just upgrading our pets it feels like we are doing something that is better than some of our bad habits when Im depressed. There are a few things we wish were different: 1) we wish there were more opportunities for adventures throughout the day, even if you dont get more pets we want to feel like Im being encouraged to get up and do more real life adventures more often; 2) we didnt realize when you go to the next land all your pets and rewards go away :( we developed an attachment to our pets and we thought that maybe going to the next land the challenges would start at 50xp with the same characters, not have to start over completely again. This honestly detached us from the game a little. We loved how cute the pets were from the forest and we dont really care for the Halloween land at all. We also am disappointed you cant get item rewards in the next land, and you can only get candy, coins, and outfits. The outfits and coins only come few and far between. Right now Im just racking up candy but Im not able to do much more because we cant afford any of the items so we dont play as much anymore :( 3) maybe add a section for suggestions since its a fairly new way and we feel like we have no other way of communicating other than through reviews? We hope you can take our suggestions and perhaps change them in some way!

We’ve been really enjoying the game and we’ve now made it to Chapter 3. Id love to keep moving forward, but Chapter 3 has an issue and crashes all the time. Whenever we start a mission, we cannot close out of the mission window. We have to close out the app entirely. When we come back later the mission is complete. We then get the rewards and have the same problem; we cant close out of the window and we have to close the app. We would love to keep going but restarting the app twice for every mission is really disheartening.

This is probably one of the best self-care apps out there, but we would love to see a few small improvements. Adventures are restricted to a 24 hour cooldown, which we feel could be tweaked a bit. We think if they allowed for more adventures in the day but only rewarded them with a bit of gold during the cooldown it would still be enough incentive for people to go the extra mile, especially since it gets harder to get gold later on. Speaking of which, this game really needs an ability to trade in or sell extra items or outfits. We have nearly a hundred shuffle shakes and outfits since the rewards are skewed heavily towards them. I’d much rather have experience pies or stamina items but instead we’re stuck with useless outfit duplicates since pets can only wear one thing at once. It also severely bloats the dress-up menu, which for us is a tad depressing. If we could sell them for a small bit of gold (even just 10-20 a piece) or trade x number into a swap shop for points to get items it would be far better. Overall, the game is quite the treat, and the music is rather relaxing for when you need to wind down before bed. It helps push people towards enjoying the routine of self-care without imposing, which is very much appreciated these days.

We love the idea there are just a few minor quibbles we have 1) the mini quests you go on take too short a time (usually under a minute) this encourages you to stay in the ap for large amounts of time reassigning missions Maybe make them take longer it grows wearisome especially after you unlock stamina soup and can keep going and going 2) you can only adventure once a day In all honesty we think the adventure tactic is probably the best feature of the game, however as it only allows you to go once a day we feel this is a bit counter to the mindfulness goal the game seems to be pushing for Maybe have the option of 1 pet unlocking adventure and smaller no pet unlocking adventures that might not give pets but can still be utilized for better mindfulness 3) when you get new pets they start at the very bottom so you functionally only end up having half of them doing anything productive the rest just languish at the bottom unless you try to power level them which is also really rather tedious Maybe when you get new pets you could infuse experience a different pet (that you have higher exp but dont like as much as the new pet) gained into the new pet so that an old less beloved pet has the low lvl exp and the new beloved pet can immediately begin work on the legendary missions Things this game does super well 1) mindfulness in a game is super awesome and encouraging to see! 2) the music is very soothing 3) the pets are charming All in all a good game with room for improvement!

We enjoyed the game when playing through the first chapter and love the idea of a game that motivates and rewards heathy habits. We agree with other comments that the ability to go on additional missions for small bonuses (maybe temporary xp boost or quicker stamina refill) would be a good mechanic to look into. We were very disappointed that when beginning chapter two you lose all progress and have no access to chapter one rewards. We have several friends that were so put off that they said they dont want to continue playing. There is no motivation to continue play once youve defeated the boss as nothing you gain will ever be put to use. Perhaps having a part of the game outside of the chapters themselves where leveled pets can be used to get particular rewards that can be used in any chapter or some mechanic to send help (send earned rewards to other realms). We also think its odd that nothing is linked between chapter but missions and stamina are handled collectively. The are only connected to the detriment of the player and not connected to any benefits. Even if things were more expensive or required higher Xp the ability to merge pets from across realms or shared gold would make continuing to play the game even after defeating the boss (supporting long term habit forming).

We really enjoyed playing this game over the past few days. It was pretty addicting Ill admit, but we feel like it did motivate us to get up and do adventures. Most of our pets were over level 30 and we were leveling up a few more we acquired this morning, but our game suddenly reset and we lost all our progress. We even had cloud services enabled but it didnt restore our data. Im super bummed and we dont want to play any more.

Beautiful graphics. Nice tutorial. But since the game play only allows one real world task a day, it immediately devolves into any other click/wait/click rewards based game that is entirely device oriented. We love the intent, but we dont see how the actual game play is helpful.

Good game but forgot our progress we even went through cloud nothing please fix this.

Hi, just want to thank you and say we are really enjoying this app and finding it motivational. We know its free and has no ads, which is phenomenal, so we are not just out here looking a gift horse in the mouth, but we do have some ideas to suggest. A couple of things that we think would make it more fun to use are: -not having a dialogue about putting theo outfits on when the player wins a new hat or wing. This dialogue actually makes us avoid those missions. -stacking the costume items in inventory the same way the food items are stacked, rather than having the player scroll past ten identical unicorn horns or wings. -allowing players to merge or otherwise trade in costume items. Thanks for developing this!

UPDATE: It was a great little game, but is it over? If level 50 is the highest level, then level 50 missions should offer something other than XP which does nothing at that point. Also, legendary missions are now nowhere to be found, which means no more gems. So, basically Im just left with checking in once a day to do the real life activity and hope to collect a new pet or two (and a gem) from that missions reward. We like the variety in this game. Collecting, grinding, merging, and upgrading (although we wish those last two were more sophisticated). If they add a crafting element, then Im hooked forever. We love the real life activities idea. We just wish there were more opportunities to participate in them; even if there were different tiers with different rewards. It would be nice to have an option to filter available missions by skill type. Also, we stopped going for outfits early on as there are a ton of duplicates; itd be nice if you could sell those for gold at least. We wrote a 250 word short story based on one of the recommended real life activities. Writers block cured!

Let us start by saying that there are a lot of qualities about this game that we enjoyed. Having a real life goal was something we found very helpful, and, like many other reviewers, we would love to be able to do more than one a day for extra motivation. The art is cute and the game was overall simple but pretty fun. However, we found myself also spending hours starting quests and watching the roughly 30 seconds pass over and over repeatedly, just as was mentioned in another review. This is certainly a personal problem of ours, but it does seem a bit counter-productive. We found myself doing a project before we started our adventure in-game, and then working on our animals while the time passed instead of choosing a new adventure and putting our phone down to accomplish a new task. Might we suggest (if its possible) that during an adventure, the game pauses itself until the adventure is completed? We feel that would possibly force people to actually be a bit more motivated to do the adventure when they say they are going to. We’ve had this game for about a week. We’ve finished chapter one, maxed out several animals, and have no more legendary quests. We cant open chapter two for 11 more days, which unfortunately means that our impatient self will probably bore of the game before that week and a half passes because we no longer have a goal, but hopefully that wont be the case. We see a lot of potential here and we are interested in seeing what is added in the future.

We love this game and it is very cute and fun. The only thing we think that could improve it is that we think we should have more than just one daily adventure.

Great game and a fun stress reliever. If we could make some suggestions: having the option to do multiple activities per day (maybe varied rewards for this so you dont unlock all the pets in day or two) and also the option to sell excess outfits for gold, make them a little rarer, or allow pets to wear more than one item. Cant wait to see where the game goes, hope it continues to be developed!

Great concept and very cute design! Suggestions for outfits: -Consolidate! E.g. Watering Can x5 instead of having 5 individual Watering Cans -Have a list of all of the possible outfits like you do for the pets (?? For undiscovered ones) -Allow pets to wear one of each type (head, back, hand). For example, leaf hat, wings, and fireflies.

We started playing after seeing an article about how Guardians: Unite the Realms could integrate self-care and behavioral change into phone gameplay. As someone who wastes way too much time on her phone playing games (and also has depression, anxiety and problems with motivation and procrastination) we were very intrigued. Im really enjoying it so far, but the first day or two were slow as we didnt have enough coins to buy items to refill stamina. This kept us coming back, and we’ve probably been playing a little too much since downloading. We highly recommend :) That said, we wish there was an opportunity to have multiple adventures each day, and we’ve noticed other reviewers saying the same. Our main reason for getting yet another game was to focus on the self-care aspect, so we were disappointed to see that Im only able to do it once. Id LOVE to see more adventures daily, and we think it could be incredibly useful. Once we complete the activity for the day we go back to regular addictive gameplay, but would really appreciate it if there could be many throughout the day. It would help a lot, especially given the devs motivation to create the app in the first place. If adventures were available over the course of the day, it would be a great reminder to get up and break the habits of phone use by encouraging productivity and self-care. Also would find it helpful to be able to write in the custom activities, which we saw is coming in a future update (thank you!) Maybe even the option to manually track how long players have spent on each activity, similar to Pomodoro apps like Forest or Flora. Its motivating to us to be able to see just how much time we’ve spent focusing or doing good thingsfor example, if we spent 15 minutes meditating or an hour or two doing homework (MSW student in finals week here), itd be cool to look back and see how much time we were able to get things done throughout the day. Lastly, wondering if theres any plan to up social media presence? Even though the game itself isnt interactive it could be fun to connect with other players on a forum like Reddit to see what other people are choosing to do for their daily activities. Maybe even a daily Instagram or Facebook post asking what everyone had done that day? Given the games purpose, Id love to have more opportunities to return to that initial idea and focus on the self-care piece. Not sure how much time this would take for the developers to implement. Overall, Im having a lot of fun playing this game and would highly recommend downloading! (Updating to echo someone elses idea of having skill levels for players to track as they complete certain activities and could be tailored to fit each persons individual needs and areas of struggle. Thatd be awesome!)

Love the app. The pets are cute. It would be great if you could add more adventures to motivate us to do things. Maybe offer some other rewards besides more pets, like more stamina.

So far, an adorable game! We really appreciate the focus on mental health. The art is adorable, and we love all the mission names. Being able to do more than one daily personal mission, as well as being able to see a history of them and name our custom ones, would be awesome. It would be kind of fun if we had skills like the pets, and different types of missions leveled different things (for example, we have a bad habit of skipping meals or just eating protein bars, maybe make cook something healthy increase our personal herbalism?) Over all, Im really enjoying and Im excited to see where it goes!

Guardians is very cool! You quickly delve into an epic story, explore really cool characters, and feel more wholesome. Wow!

We dont usually play games of any sort on our phone, but we love this one! It has definitely made us more mindful of everyday actions that lead to our mental wellbeing and with so many cute pets and witty descriptions (of both pet profiles and missions), we cant help but smile!

This app is an admirable idea, but a few minor tweaks we think would make it more powerful as a self-care tool. Being able to go on multiple adventures a day, (maybe only the first one counts, for the big reward, but the following ones give minor gold rewards, stamina, etc.,) could help keep the play cycle active and build a habit of doing a minor, positive thing each time youre compulsively checking your phone. Also, when doing a custom adventure, being able to type in your custom adventure in will help make it feel tangible. And, having a list of your old custom adventures remembered might be a good prompt, especially for ADHD, when you know you should do something but you just cant remember in the moment all the things you told yourself you wanted to get done.

One bug is the inability to exit a mission that you dont want to start. In the first missions, some require multiple friends, but not enough are available. Clicking the [X] does not work. We have to force close the app…

Congrats, you made an addictive game. Problem is, that means we were unable to stop playing it until we fell asleep with our fingers still on the screen. We will never get yesterday back, and we are afraid to ever open your app again. If you’re gonna promote it as a mental health tool, it darn well needs a warning on it for those of us who tend to get caught in loops. It is one of the worst software traps we have been stuck in for years, and we can tell you why. Your wait times for reward and recharge are too short. If it was longer than fifteen seconds or a minute, we might have been able to go off and do something else for a while, but when its just seconds we are going to wait and see our prize, over and over and over, and we could not stop, just got worse and worse, more and more impatient, to the point where we reflexively looked for a button to pay to speed things up (and we are a poor person who cant really afford that). We wasnt having actual fun just couldnt stop. Lengthen the waiting time. We would also recommend building in some mandatory waiting periods, where the animals sleep or something, so that your players have to log off and do something else for a while. Otherwise, some of us people with problems like OCD are going to end up not eating or sleeping (again). You promote this as a tool for mental health, so you are going to be attracting more people like us and also have a greater responsibility than the folks who are just making games promoted for fun. We hope to be able to think about something other than your game today, and am deleting it now, because we cannot tolerate what it does to us. Good luck with your project.
