Description

I Have no Mouth, And I Must Scream is a classic point-and-click adventure game originally released in 1995 on PC. Based on a short story of the same title by Harlan Ellison, one of the most-acclaimed American science-fiction writers, I Have no Mouth, And I Must Scream immerses the player in a frightening post-apocalyptic atmosphere 109 years after a supercomputer named AM has wiped out humanity. Created during the War, AM hates all humans and has decided to make the last five survivors pay for what they’ve done. These survivors are now immortal, so AM can torture them forever for its own sadistic pleasure.

In the game, you’ll guide each character through their own “hell”– reviewing their past and confronting their fears and weaknesses, all whilst clinging to the hope of someday being free.

I Have no Mouth, And I Must Scream integrates many appealing features, including:

  • Change between "touch" mode and "classic" mode at any time
  • Changeable graphics – player can choose between different filters
  • Different soundtracks – “midi”, “adlib”, and more
  • Several languages available: English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian (subtitles only)
  • Play as multiple characters – you choose the order
  • Alternate endings
  • Well-crafted puzzles
  • Inspired by Harlan Ellison’s short story, who also voices the supercomputer!
  • No ads, no in-app purchases, no hidden costs. Enjoy all content!

A great story with an interesting, original plot that’s disturbing and thought-provoking in equal measure, I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream is an essential title for any adventure game fan — and now you can enjoy this cult classic on smartphone and tablet with this specially-adapted version!

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream Reviews

We want to have intercourse with AM.

When our PC version of this game was no longer compatible with our computer we were heartbroken. Imagine our surprise to find it alive and well and living on the App Store! Thank you to all those beautiful nerds who refused to let it die.

We need more retro games like this!

We read the original book this game is based off of called alone against tomorrow. Thats what sparked our initial interest. Im using a iPhone 5S and have had no complaints. We like the darkness about the game. Look forward to finishing.

We were scared to purchase this, truthfully we hate buying things on the App Store and the reviews about interface problems + loading issues made us incredibly hesitant, but IHNMaIMS is one of our favorite short stories of all time. We wanted badly to play the game, but dont own a PC. We finally purchased this app and could not be more happy with it! Everything is ported wonderfully over to iOS, gameplay remains intact, and the overall story of the game itself is wonderful! Couldnt be happier with it. So glad to see this underrated game get such a good transfer to iOS!

A wonderfully made game made from one of the most horrific stories ever to embrace the world of literature. Harlan Ellisons we Have No Mouth and we Must Scream puts players in the shoes of five different people stuck within the depths of the Earth, tortured by the AI, AM (Allied Mastercomputer.) Each characters scenario explores their past along with their flaws. The puzzles are difficult (as per any other standard 90s point and click game) and the game explores many themes including grief, psychology, anxiety, eternal damnation, and many others. The game includes new graphics options that removes the jagged edges from the pixelated sprites, includes a tap control mode along with a classic cursor mode, and two soundtracks that feature the original midi-based ost, along with the remastered ost (missing a couple of tracks.) The game runs wonderfully on our phone, though the controls are a bit tedious as first. The positive theme is also missing from the remastered ost for some odd reason. Otherwise, its a great game and we definitely suggest buying it, whether it be on iOS or on your PC.

We originally posted about this game being riddled with bugs and dead-ends, but after taking to the Sierra Online mantra of saving often, it remedied many of the original issues we had uncovered. The game itself has been remastered in a way that looks good and plays decently for a touch device. However, we did have an issue where switching to only subtitles stuck and would not allow us turn back on voices (it required a complete uninstall to remedy, which was greatly frustrating). Other than this, we change our original suggestion of using the GOG version to instead play this game like the old adventure games where you have >at least< 2 different save slots in use (I ran into an issue where we had a saved stuck character, which was quite useless). Regardless of bugs, we are glad this game was ported and available for iOS as it brings an intriguing adventure game to the platform.

Fun old school game with an intriguing story and atmosphere. Some challenging puzzles with an in game hint system (seems like youre mildly penalized for using it). Biggest issue we’ve found is some game breaking bugs in 1 of the scenarios (I think you can actually start over by drinking some punch but still could use a fix.) also make sure to keep multiple saves and save when your character isnt doing anything to minimize risk of a bad save. Overall, very recommended retro adventure, just with caveats.

The game itself is smart, thought-provoking, mature, and challenging but not intractable. 4.5 stars. The translation to iOS, however, is quite poor. First of all, the controls are confusing. More than halfway through the game, we are still not sure how to go through doors (do we use them? Walk to them? Push them? Some combination of those?) Second, there are bugs that, though rarely encountered, can render the game unplayable. To cite just one example, we once lost almost a third of our progress because our player simply disappeared from the playing field when we loaded our saved-progress file.

Game freezes all the time. Can’t progress anymore. Read your reviews for once.

As an older gamer, we were beyond excited to find this release on iPad. Unfortunately, after our initial excitement, we found it to be a buggy mess. The touch controls do not work well and led to multiple game breaking glitches that lost us about an hours worth of progress. The Give function also does not work with the touch controls and the classic controls cursor sensitivity is busted. How controls for a Point and Click adventure game can be this broken is beyond belief. The graphic and sound conversion seems faithful and well done, but until the controls are fixed this game is a waste of your time and money. We like DotEmu and own a few of their retro conversions, but they won’t get another dime from us until this game is fixed.

Awesome! Love it! 90s adventure games are our jam.

Great if you got that i6 screen. Good fun for those who enjoy the macabre.

We’ve owned Ihnmaims for over a year off of steam, obsessing over it and wishing we had the time to play it over and over again. But now it’s here! We think it was a wonderful choice to put it on mobile. The text comes off the screen and doesn’t appear for a while, but its something you can over look once you turn the text off. Good work!! : )

Plays well on an iPhone 6 sized screen. Suspends and resumes without issue. Only small issue is that subtitles only display the first line, but you want to play with the sound on anyway for the voice acting.

The game is amazing. It has a little learning curve but nothing hard. We ran into a handful of bugs and crashes, so save often.

It’s a very weird game. Never played it before. We don’t understand the plot and the only possible way to beat it requires you to use a walk through. We wish we had a better game to be playing currently… We have not had many serious technical issues like the ones we’ve seen described we other posts. We did get stuck in one level and the avatar was stuck in a room she couldn’t leave for some reason (so save manually).

Buggy, we had initially turned the voice acting off but after we discovered that the subtitles display only one line at a time we tried to switch the voice overs back on. However no matter how many times we reload or start a new game the voice overs are still absent, so yeah. Other than that it’s aight we guess.

It is thoroughly alright. Fairly regularly there are problems with the game not responding to things it should, particularly doors and movement. It can be hard to select something that is close to another object. Occasionally that will kill you so it’s a bit of a problem. SPOILER ALERT The worst bug we’ve found is with Garristor. There should be an option to put Edna into the Zeppelin to power it… But it’s one of those non responsive actions that we can’t seem to get to go. Clear up these bugs, and it is a worthy tribute to the original.

Gets stuck at "mojo touch" loading screen and does not progress further. Unplayable, wish we could get a refund.

We were very excited to play this game, but we are having a tough time playing it. Takes forever to load, frame rate is very slow, controls don’t always work, subtitles don’t go along with the speaking. Very very disappointed that we paid to not be able to play this game.

The game, as it stands now, is completely unplayable and according to several online forums, this is a common problem. The loading of the game is incredibly slow and the "MojoTouch" screen freezes for about a minute before advancing, very roughly, to the next screen. When the game finally loads, the audio and video are so completely out of sync that the game is unplayable. Even simple actions, like tapping on a character or selecting an action, takes close to a minute to execute in the game, not to mention that the animations run so slowly and so roughly that it is hard to grasp what is even happening in the story. We will gladly update our review once the problem is fixed, but as it stands now, the game is unplayable for myself and many others. Either a fix needs to be released or refunds issued for this inoperable app.

Was so slow and unresponsive on our we pad we decided to delete it. Should have followed the reviews.
