Description

Knotwords is a minimal and elegant logic puzzle — with words.

The rules are simple: arrange the letters in each section so every word is valid, across and down.

Each puzzle may seem difficult at first — but like all my favorite newspaper puzzles, it gets easier as you progress. Each step guides you naturally towards the solution.

This is the kind of game I’ve been trying to make my whole career — I’m amazed Jack and I discovered this design. We hope you like it.

Knotwords Review

One of the best word games ever. Play it every day. We wish puzzles could be synced between devices. Other than that, perfection!

We’ve been a fan of Zach Gages games for a long time, and have played our favorite one, TypeShift , for the last few years. We think we have a new favorite Knotwords. Totally addictive, totally fun, and totally makes you use your brain. We love it! For us, it only falls short in one area the inability to sync game progress between devices. Im one of those goal-setting people that likes to complete challenges in games, and we use more than one iOS device. Without the ability to sync our progress, we feel limited to playing Knotwords on only our iPad 9, since this is the device we first installed the game on, and our other iOS devices cant recognize our progress made on this iPad. The same can be said for TypeShift. We actually LOOK for games that have the ability to sync your game progress. It would be GREAT if progress synching would be added to this game! Otherwise, Knotwords is pretty perfect. Perfect enough we shelled out $11 to purchase the full game, on the first day we downloaded it. Please consider adding game progress syncing to this wonderful game (Knotwords). And maybe also to TypeShift. That would be most excellent!

No timers, no competition, just yourself and letters. Keeps you thinking without making you feel illiterate. We absolutely love this game thank you.

What we love about this game are the times the puzzles are simple enough that we can solve then using an intuitive technique where we make quick guesses about letters around the board and then work the puzzle out in nice big chunks until we bring it all together for a speedy, satisfying finish. But as the puzzles get harder throughout the week, it gets harder to play using that method. The game becomes more and more about agonizing over something specific, and the joy just gets sucked right out of it. Sometimes we’re even reduced to asking for a hint… Talk about depressing. It’s like it’s not even the same game by the time Sunday comes around. We’ve stopped even trying to play harder puzzles. Our rating is based only on the part we enjoy.

We love whenever we get a new best time for any given weekday, but theres no way to check what our best time is! Would be a simple addition we think, and would make the game a bit more competitive and fun for me.

We were getting very frustrated with this game, especially Friday – Sunday, when it got exceedingly more difficult, the hints were either too easy or impossible, and we were spending waaaaayyy too much time trying to figure it out, time which we really didnt suppose to be using trying to get that days answer. Our sister let us know about a feature we did not have enabled where you she got immediate feedback on whether the word she had entered was the right one or not. How nice is that?! We dont spend endless amount of time trying to figure out the puzzle when a word (or more) has been entered incorrectly. We dont need the hints anymore (which we actually miss using. Ha!) we still get a challenge, especially on the weekends, but the puzzle is now doable. Maybe Ill get so good at it, that Ill go back without getting that instant feedback, but for now, its nice to enjoy playing the games, without that little voice telling us theres other things we need to be doing.

The movement of the focus when banging out letters is maddening. Also, the streaks are compelling but we would kid internet have a consistent difficulty from day to day than the scales difficulty from Monday to Sunday. Daily classics are too easy on Monday and k dont have time for Saturday and Sunday.

We just did a puzzle from the October puzzlebooks. Is hided a word??? We know the past tense of hide is hid. Unless hided has something to do with animal hides? Just our two cents.

We love the concept and core gameplay, but many of the puzzles use words that are a little too obscure. We dont find these words in any regular dictionary and can only find the solution by taking random guesses when nothing else fits into the final squares. Lovely game otherwise.

Love everything about the game. Wish when we click into the game there was a back button to get home. We dont like how we have to double click the date to start the puzzle. Otherwise its good.

Innovative and fun for word game lovers. Two minor quibbles: backspacing is confusing. And we wish progress would sync to cloud, so we can play on either our iPhone or iPad. We never have a streak because we play on different devices.

Love the game, just a bummer that so much of it is behind a paywall. We got through the free games in just about a day, started doing the daily puzzles, then also found out that those are only free if you complete them day of – cant even do a missed one from the same week without paying. Pretty disappointing, would be nice to have an extended free version (maybe a section of minis, but full puzzles you need to pay to access like the NYT crossword)

There are all kinds of bugs on the archive puzzles prior to 2022 and there is no link within the app to ask for help or to troubleshoot. Right now Im on Dec 24, 2021 daily Classic puzzle and using hints freezes the game and when you close out the app it doesnt save it automatically like all the other puzzles do. Im playing our way back on all the puzzles and even when/if we finish them all there will be one game not finished. There needs to be a help link option in the app to help with issues like this.

Bummer the navigation is so clunky (I cant seem to swipe or single-tap several of the buttons to select them). But fun game play once you get the hang of it.

Maybe we caught it on a bad month but there were a LOT of nonsense words (ENS and TADS?). Nice interface and all but not really a word puzzle game.

Although, like many, we find this app addictive we have one major complaint. Today there was the word carns which is not found in our dictionaries. Maybe it is some dialectic variation on cairns, but still not fair. Also the developers use many other very obscure words, and apparently allow names and not words, inconsistently. Im sure we will keep our streaks going and do appreciate being able to recover a streak by completing a new week of puzzles. You too may get addicted but beware of some of the pitfalls and word derivatives repeatedly used by the developers. Also please double-check your definition/dictionary. Todays definition for oysters: plural form of oyster A large and often winding stream which drains a land mass. It goes on to further describe a river or stream but not a bivalve in any way. Wrong! Careless, causing confusion and bad time counts. Shame!

Went through the tutorial and then tried to choose a puzzle and it froze.

Frustrated that we paid for the subscription and confirmed the payment in our phone settings and bank statement but we are no longer able to access premium benefits. There is no way to communicate with anyone about this matter.

We keep losing hints from the puzzle book even though we didnt use them. We would finish the day with 6/6 and then next day its at 4 for some reason. If this bug is fixed Im happy to add a star.

KenKen for words/letters. Well designed game.

Great free game – liked it enough it to try the 1 week free trial, mostly to access the trickypuzzles and am v pleasantly at the pace of difficulty so far! We feel like thats hard to get right. Excited to play more and hope they keep making increasingly tricky puzzles.

In the morning we start with solving the daily NYT Wordle. Throughout the day we do all three Knotwords daily puzzles. Every. Single. Day.

We enjoy this game a lot; just challenging enough to make us think, but always solvable. Subscribed immediately after the free trial, felt worth it. Besides fixing the cursor quirks noted in other reviews, we wish that keeping track of streaks was something that could be turned off in the paid version. It was fun at first, and we enjoyed recovering our streak the first time we lost it, but now it just adds stress. We wish we could just play the daily games as we have time to do them, without being constantly reminded when we have had to miss a day.

Puzzle game that respects your time! Daily challenges designed to keep you engaged, not to take advantage and swallow you up. Great puzzles that rely on your logic with satisfying feedback when youve done something correctly or incorrectly.

This is a great puzzle crossword game with a unique twist. Im finding it great fun to solve.

We absolutely adore this game. Being a crossword puzzle fan, we knew that this was our cup of tea, but after almost three months, we see that it hits all the right points. Fun, challenging, excellent UX, puzzles that range from 1 to 30 minutes. Really happy that we made the choice to invest in a license. Could not be more pleased.

What a great game! Just our speed; challenging enough on weekends but not impossible. We have a feature request: please add a tip jar. We would like to pay you for this game but we do NOT want to be able to play for an hour (or more!) a day, which is what we would do. So please let us pay you for the game as is or maybe throw in the ability to go back and play daily puzzles on those rare days we miss one. Thank you.

The game doesnt think axes is a valid word. Its a great game, though.

This is a wonderful game and we love playing it! Two things would make it better: 1) we would love to see the stats of other players alongside our own 2) Often the order of entering letters isnt intuitive. If we have completed all but one square in a section the curser should automatically jump to the next empty square. The way The NY Times Crossword app handles it is perfect. Thanks for making a great game!

This game is amazing and really worth checking out. As others have said, it’s become a part of our daily routine, along with Wordle. We even get our family involved on particularly tricky scrambles.

This game is really fun as a word game, but really makes it stand out, in our opinion, is the vibration design built into every action you do. It makes everything you do feel rewarding in a tactile way that phone games typically lack. Kudos to the devs for that.

The game itself is five stars and above! We wish the subscription model was different, but we paid the once time fee and it was totally worth it.

Thank you for designing a game with a free mode that doesnt rely on ads and is fully playable. We havent purchased it yet but the price is very fair. Hopefully others will be inspired to do the same. The game its self is a lot of fun. We also love the clean UI/graphics.

This game is simple yet complex enough to be interesting, and when you get it, the animation is just so adorable we cant wait to see it, and we always turn up our volume to hear that cute little voice! We love that your streak is always recoverable if you miss a day. But we do agree with other reviewers that the backspacing cursor is quite confusing and would be better served to stay horizontal or vertical depending on in which orientation you just gave input. Well done, such a keeper!

We could play this forever. It takes best parts of a jumble and a crossword and makes for a super fun game. Every Zach Gage game is a blast and beautiful to look at. Thanks!!!

Knotwords scratches the same itch as Wordle, but is way more fun and variable. We paid for the license and the extra puzzles are worth it. Plus they deserve the support.

This is the best word game to come along since EA gave up on Scabble. Well-designed user interface. Phenomonally rare privacy policy — no data collected! There are three simple, easy-to-find settings in the app. Our only quibble lies here. So-called "music" is full volume by default. IMO let those who actually like such a racket turn it on. It has no settings in the device menu. We were expecting "use cellular data" , but it appears everything is included in the unusually large download. It does appear under "Siri", where we turn off everything for all apps. Many an app we download, we delete within sixty seconds. This is a keeper. Update after much use: This is strongly addictive for fans of word games. The three dailies are now part of our morning routine. We started the monthly book for the current month and finished all sixty puzzles in one week. (Did we say it’s addictve?) Just now dug into the archives and discovered — and fixed — our early failures. Now we’re working backward through previously untried games. (Did we say it’s addictve? Good thing we’re retired!) Only nit: Cursor movement is confusing, especially when backspacing to fix an error. Toggling between the two entry modes toggles the confusion mode as well. Not bad enough to deduct a star, but be alert! The world needs more lerts.

This is a really fun logic-based word game. We tell people its kind-of a cross between a crossword and sudoku. 4/5 stars for several reasons. The game progress and achievements dont sync over multiple devices. We had a really good streak going (which are achievements in the game), but Im out of town this weekend and dont have the device we primarily play it on. In all fairness you can regain your streak by playing 7 days in a row but Im not sure if that works multiple times. We usually play it on our 10.5 iPad since reading the hint letters on the phone can sometimes be hard to see (larger puzzles mainly). And we prefer tapping around the screen with the Apple Pencil that reaching around with our hand. When activating a hint, we wish the puzzle didnt zoom out so much and we wish the hint bubble didnt cover the puzzle board. Its a little frustrating how that UI works. We also wish the game archive had a better UI. The current view doesnt scale well. Maybe takes some hints from Apples calendar app and include a year view? Or maybe when you enter the archive it takes you to the last unplayed game? That all said, we still really enjoy the game and made a full purchase.

Please stop using so many plurals and present tense verbs (words that end with S). In crosswords and other traditional puzzles, editors avoid these words. With that said, the gameplay is great and worth the price. But it would go from good to great with better word selection.

Super great game. Buy it. But it really needs a way to sync results across iOS devices.

Would be five stars except for bugs. We finished Septembers puzzlebook and it says 30.9 of 30 completed and doesnt register as complete in the accomplishments. Minor gripe, we know, but this seems to be only way to report feedback to the developers. We will revise the review when the bug is fixed.

This is a great game, but there is a pain point. The active square moves to the incorrect spot half the time after you enter a letter. For example, there is a grid of 4 squares, after filling in the 3rd square, the active sqaure doesn’t move to the empty space and we end up overwriting a correct letter. This is very fixable.

Its super frustrating with how it detects where youre trying to put a letter next. We know that you can slide to just do a whole word but when we dont do that, since Im just trying to be super efficient, its a huge pain when the boxes orient to a weird spot! Otherwise this game is super clever and fun to play! Im addicted for sure!

This is a fun game with polished mechanics. We wish we didnt remember it so much for the upsells but they are constant and in your face, so even though we buy app expansions for games like Carcassonne or Ticket to Ride we’ve resisted buying this one because it feels like rewarding behavior we dont like.

Great puzzle game, but it overheats on our iPhone 7.

This game eats up our iPhone battery (and the battery is brand new), makes it very hot within 10 minutes of playing and sometimes freezes in the middle of a puzzle. Also theres something wrong with the counting of hints.

Please add more themed and special puzzles for premium users. And add an easier way to switch from vertical to horizontal input (a way to switch direction from the keyboard would be super helpful! Also a tap instead of swipe would be better on the actual board). This may be a bug but we completed a standard puzzlebook and did not get the achievement.
