A Glimpse into Little Orpheus

A game by The Chinese Room

The year is 1962 and NASA are trying to put a man on the moon. In a remote corner of Siberia, a Soviet cosmonaut is heading in the other direction. Comrade Ivan Ivanovich is dropped into an extinct volcano in his exploration capsule, Little Orpheus, to explore the center of the earth. He promptly vanishes.

Three years later he emerges claiming to have saved the world. He has also lost the atomic bomb powering the Little Orpheus. He is taken to a top secret bunker deep below the Ural mountains to be debriefed by the fearsome General Yurkovoi, a man so frightening even Stalin won’t buy him a drink. The General rolls up his sleeves, fixes Ivan with a steely glare and say “So… where have you been comrade? And where is my bomb?”
And Ivan looks him right back in the eye and says “Well General, you might not believe what happened to me, but I’ll do my best. Because it happened like this…”

Join our bold yet hapless hero as he explores lost civilizations, undersea kingdoms, prehistoric jungles and lands beyond imagination. Gasp as he battles the subhuman tribe of the Menkv and escapes the clutches of dreadful monsters! Cheer as he triumphs over impossible odds and brings socialism to the subterranean worlds!

Little Orpheus is a technicolor side-scrolling adventure game inspired by classic movies like Flash Gordon, Sinbad and The Land that Time Forgot. Delivered in eight bite-size, commute-friendly episodes, Little Orpheus is simple enough for casual players but rich enough for seasoned adventure fans.

If you’re a fan of old school family blockbusters, want a rollercoaster story that’ll take you to the Earth’s core and beyond, or are just in some need of ideologically correct entertainment, join the most unlikely hero to hit Apple Arcade on an adventure beyond belief. With stunning visuals, brilliant acting and a world-class score, Little Orpheus is a pocket-epic you’ll never forget.

Comrades, to the center!

No issues, no problems, no malfunctions, would enjoy more episodes, but other than that, no complaints. Perfect 1000/10. Truly love it. Truly amazing.

Before anything we have to say this is the best mobile game made. Also, this is practically like a Disney movie and is so heart warming! The ending of chapter eight made us cry. Where iven and the guy listening make the rest of the story together and that was so great. If you read this you should definitely make a sequel!

We want to say this is THE very best game in the app store… Period. We want to say that. Then we get to episode 5 and we have a issue making a jump. We learn later we needed to open a clam shell. In doing so we tried Xbox controller and the experience connected to our Mac computer was terrible. We ran into opening clam shell on accident, cleared chapter and now am back to enjoying game. We tell this story for two reasons: the development on touch screen we find far better and more compelling even though game in beginning recommends controller, we don’t. And the second reason is that some moments are not clear what to do because the developers likely made it that way on purpose to offer a puzzle challenge in that moment. Don’t give up, if a game mechanic isn’t working in our experience it is because there is another solution… Find it. You will not regret it as we do think this is still the very best game in the app store, not perfect but the story telling with the visuals as you move with the game is the very best we have ever seen in this touch environment!

Had previously played Creaks and INMOST and was looking for another game that really made Apple Arcade worth it and this takes the cake. Beautiful game.

Its been over a week and our review has still not been posted. Lets try again. Little Orpheus is a fun and witty game with just the right amount of difficulty. The voice actors are so good. The game is best played with a controller, as the developers suggest. Im on the next to final chapter of the game and it keeps us smiling and engaged.

We love playing this beautiful game. But, dang the flying fish through the storm part is discouragingly hard!

We loved loved this game we loved the story line and everything. But when will we get more? We already beat the game like 20 times and we want and need more!!! Please make more!!!!

This is a must have game! You wont be disappointed, great story line and simple gameplay that will keep you engaged.

Little Orpheus drew us in innocently enough, but we were quickly ensnared by the overwhelming charm of this game. This visuals are gorgeous, and have this awesome old school cinematic filter that gives it the feel of a drive in movie sci fi flick, and we love it. The music is outstanding, similarly cued to its vintage movie flavor, and its perfectly done.. The story and voice acting though are what really drove this thing home for us. Its written superbly and as the story winds and unravels, we became incredibly fond of the characters and their banter. The crescendo of the game in particular really made us like humanity a little bit more as a whole.. This is far more polished than Im used to seeing on mobile, and we encourage anyone who enjoys side scrolling games to give this a visit!

When will it be an update to this game waiting for more adventures.

As a game its fine, but thats missing the point. Little Orpheus is, above all, a work of art. The visuals, music, acting, story, are just phenomenal. Its more immersive and imaginative than 95% of what you will experience at the movies and a lot more fun. Thanks for making us feel like a kid again!

So good that we finished 3 chapters in one sitting and the cop is very funny.

This game has a great, funny story that’s incredibly imaginative. It has great graphics that are very tripped out. We don’t know who was more of an insane commie, Ivan or us high on Northern Lights while watching video game Northern Lights. I’d like more games like this from Apple Arcade. To be honest, we were hoping that Apple Arcade was actually a subscription service for gamers with games that could be on the systems. We after all play games on our desktop, and nothing about the name "apple arcade" specifically says "mobile phone game" to us. So, "Little Orpheus" is our favorite game on apple arcade. The story, a funny cold war socialist to the center of the earth, really speaks to us. Give it a shot, especially after a bong hit.

UPDATE: The developer was very responsive (Marijam Didgalvyt to be specific) and we can now progress in this delightfully witty and sly game. The scene we were stuck on does take some effort to complete, but at last we can move on with joy having finished that leg of the journey. Thanks to the Little Orpheus team. ========== we are really enjoying this game. The humorous verbal interplay between the Russian general and the astronaut is clever and sly. The gameplay is not too easy or too hard. The graphics are beautiful. All was well until the 18% completion point in the game. The glitch is that the bridge you must walk across to continue keeps retracting so there is no way forward. Online videos made some time ago show the fireball at the left of the screen but in our gameplay it can only be moved to the right and not back again. We’ve emailed the developers. However, other than the stock email acknowledging our request, there has been no reply to our first or subsequent request. There was an update to the game about a week ago and we wonder if this caused the glitch. Either way, I’d like to continue with the game and would appreciate a fix or response from the developers.

Delightful adventure game. Great voice acting and the right amount of humor.

This is an amazing video game, definitely our favorite video game we have ever played. One small thing didnt work for us though. In episode 2, kind of close to the end of this episode we think, there was a part where we had to push a metal thing so we could use it to jump onto a ledge. We tried the interact control (tap and click) but it wouldnt work. We thought maybe that wasnt part of the puzzle so we watched a walkthrough video to be sure. The person did exactly everything we had done up until that point but then they were able to move the thing, even though we wasnt, and we were using the right control. We dont know if this is just a personalized glitch on the phone Im using or something else, but if you could help/give us feedback on how to fix this, that would be great! Again this is an awesome game, we definately recommend it, and thank you to The Chinese Room for making it!

Love this game. The running dialog is hysterical in its own way and the graphics and situations he gets into are challenging but not impossible. We especially like the underwater scenes. His movements in the water are dream-like and relaxing, even though its a tough area. (Lots of ways to die!) Bravo to the Little Orpheus team for making a traditional side-scroller into a winning game!

We just started playing this game this morning. We got to the part where it played the intro then got on the main screen to play. But we dont understand the point yet. When we logged on later today, it started from the beginning once again. ( Note. We just got it this morning so Im still quite confused about it )

Wonderful, unique art style, great music, and a very funny story with great voice acting. The game itself is a very simple platformer, so the real attraction here is watching and listenting to Ivan’s crazy story. One unfortunate problem we ran into was using a game controller (DualShock 4). The game misses many of the button inputs, making it unplayable. This happened whether the controller was connected via Bluetooth or USB. We had to switch to keyboard controls to finish playing. Hopefully this is something the developer can address.

We really liked the graphics and style of the game. Is so easy to be immersed in the game. It feels like the real thing. It said a curse word so we docked it one star.

The second to last episode is impossible and because smashing rocks that are controlled by this thing but youre not fast enough to pass them.

We instantly became addicted to the game from not only the storytelling but the graphics as well. The problem we have may not be caused from the game but only happens when we play it so anywho about 10-15mins into the game our phone starts to over heat causing it to lag even when we exit out the game. We cant do anything on our phone until it cools down.

This game is awesome! It plays just like a high end video game and the story line is pretty cool too. We would give 5 stars but there are a few bugs at times where maybe we would miss a cue or something and have to restart a level but gameplay was so fun that it became part of the challenge. We highly recommend this game. We hope new episodes come soon.

We very much enjoy the art style of this and how its like a early 20th century movie or tv show. We do have one issue, we played through the first episode and then it wouldnt let us go the next one, and we havent been able to figure it out. When we close out the game and go back to it, it makes us restart episode one. We really wanna keep playing but this is super annoying.

We’ve read through some of the reviews and seems even with a controller the game is frustrating. Imagine how frustrating it is on an iPad. It also doesnt help that many of the challenges are repetitive. Its nice artwork, but the gameplay is too much about critical timing which can be aggravating to get right. Edit: Also, the part, at the very end, where you have to navigate the the fish through the obstacles was really funback in the 1980s when we played Asteroids.

Great graphics, writing, and voice acting, but the only challenge is overcoming the terrible touch-screen controls. Perhaps its better with a controller, but we wouldnt know.

Why is there no menu you can access from the game? If, when opening the game, you accidentally select a level youve already played, you are now obligated to complete that level. F that. You should be able to exit and select the next available level.

Love the game. Its beautifully made. Only complaint is the controls. Theyre horrible and can get frustrating.

On level 5 or Episode 5 we have encountered a game breaking glitch After turning on the lamp and going up in the bubbles you have to jump across a gap in the game where there are spikes on the top and bottom that also has a switch to turn on the light.. And the game doesnt freeze (hear us out) but our character does. This game is amazing and we dont want to play all the way through the game to level 5 again just to see if it will work. Please fix this developers. This game has been amazing. Because of this we will give 3/5 stars. After fixed we will gladly change to 5/5. Hands down one of the best games we’ve played on IOS. Just so disappointed we cant finish it.

What can we say? We really like this game but the controls are a bit annoying. We literally have to completely stop in order to interact with items. Also, we really enjoyed it all but not a fan of having to play again immediately to unlock our rewards. Great storyline, we just cant get past that.

This game must of been made by a Russian because it visually looks ok but no substance. Played for 15 minutes and with no challenges and nothing to figure out. Basically just driving the character forward. Dont waste your time.

This game sends notifications even when notifications have been turned off. Every day we get at least one unwanted notification from this game, and Im tired of it. Instead of piquing our interest into playing, theyre just pi**ing us off. So for now Im giving it two stars, but if the notifications persist then Im going to have to uninstall this annoyance altogether.

So glad we deleted it. Wish it would disappear into the abyss just like the character.

Update: Still unplayable on 13.1. — This game is unplayable on Macbook Air M2 24GB running Ventura (13.0.1). It locks up repeatedly at the same point early on in the first episode. This is very unfortunate as it looks lovely and has a very nice atmosphere. From what little we’ve seen, anyway.

Whats the point of episode 9 Why is our version more difficult at the end than what others are playing? I.

Even more sickening to see this is designed for Ages 4+ ! Make sure you watch what your kids are playing!!!

We played this game hoping for true platforming and story line but we were truly disappointed, the graphics as amazing console level graphics, but the gameplay is just boring the same things you do from the start to the end ( just walk and jump and pull some triggers) no puzzles, no new event just walk till the end , and the controls are just the worst , too laggy and slow , we get that the studio wanted to make it as simple as possible but sometimes over simplicity just doesnt work, making buttons controls wouldve been much better, so we were playing for the story which seemed interesting at the beginning, until we reached the end which was just stupid and made the whole game not worth the time that we spent into it. Big disappointment!

Literally 1 Second input lag on M1 Macbook Air is unacceptible. The lag is there whether we use keyboard or a controller. The game while beutiful is unplayable for us.

Game can run for couple of minutes, then it will freeze. Need to restart to continue playing.

Dont play on a MacBook. M1 MacBook ran at 200 Fahrenheit the whole time.

This is so funy to follow the story. Ivan Ivanovich and the general dialog is actually quite good and witty. We enjoied it through our beach vacation. It would be amazing to have a more sharper visuals, but it is fine as it is (can it be visuals downgraded due to our iPad pro 10.5 performance?)

Im usually not into side scrollers but this one is phenomenal – not only are the graphics and environments incredible but the puzzles arent super difficult so you dont get frustrated trying to figure it out – plus the overall Russian theme is pretty hilarious – definitely recommend this.

Totally one of our favorite games! We found the controls generally better than most games of this type. The graphics are lovely and the story line kept our interest. The challenges were just difficult enough. Ill be looking for more from these developers.

Beautiful graphics and love the voice-over stuff. Overall a fun and interesting game to play. You just never know whats going to happen next!
