A Glimpse into Mage Gauntlet – GameClub

"Download Mage Gauntlet. The time you spent reading this review could’ve been much better spent playing this incredible game." — Toucharcade.com Review

Lovingly patterned after 16-bit classics, Mage Gauntlet blends a top-down action-RPG template with a heavy dose of arcade action. Play as Lexi, a young woman who seeks to overcome her inability to use magic. She seeks the help of a great wizard named Whitebeard. He agrees to help her, but in return she must travel to the locations of the Guardian Wizards and ask for their assistance in the coming battle to save the world.

The Guardian Wizards don’t just live around the corner. You’ll have to travel through treacherous environments, battle dangerous enemies, and search out secrets that will give you greater power. The Mage Gauntlet given to you by Whitebeard will give you the strength to dispatch your foes in intense melee combat. It also gives you access to a variety of magic spells for when things get too hot to handle with your sword. You’ll have to master both magic and in-your-face combat if you want to save the world.

Supports MFi, XBox, and PlayStation Controllers

  • Expansive Gameplay: 84 painstakingly crafted levels
  • Deep Combat: Dodge, dash, cast magic spells, and use a variety of attacks to defeat your enemies!
  • Hidden Secrets: Can you find the secret passages and claim the rewards within?
  • Plenty of Gear: Not only do these sweet pieces of kit make you more powerful, but they also change your appearance! And did someone say something about pets? 19 pets and 110 hats can be found throughout the game.
  • Spectacular Magic: If your sword can’t do the talking, try some of the Mage Gauntlet’s powerful spells!
  • Classic Visuals: With a look that calls back to some of the greatest RPGs of all-time, each stage is a feast for the eyes!
  • Uncover the Story: You won’t find out about everything that’s going on by simply rushing through. Find the hidden lore, conquer the ultra-tough Master Mode, and seek out the extra ending!

Controller Legend:

  • Left Joystick: Move
  • A for Attack
  • B for Sprint
  • Y for Menu

To activate spell mode, hold down the right trigger. Spell controls include:

  • Left Joystick: Aim
  • Left/Right Shoulder: Change Spell

We absolutely loved this game! We had wanted to get it a few months back for it to say that it wasnt available for our version of our phone, but Im happy that its available to us!

Its 2021 and Im still playing this game… Every time we play it gives us nostalgic vibes and everything about this game is just awesome Thank you.

Great game but Im not paying a subscription to play yet especially when Apple probably has a lot better grouping of games with their subscription service for video game apps.

We played the 10 or so minutes free that is allowed to sample it. It felt and looked so fun we wanted more, however there is no way to buy the game one time or to play in some kind of ad mode. Im ok paying for the game, but we dont like paying monthly subscriptions. If they offer a way to buy the game Ill be super eager to buy it and play it all the way through. P.s. We must thank game club for bringing this game back however, apparently the game became almost abandoned, we also really liked being able to try some of the game first before having to commit to a subscription, we just want some alternative way to purchase the game (even 4.99 to permanently have access to this game alone would probably be ok for me) but we know theyre running a business so youll need to figure for yourself if a subscription is worth it for you. For a subscription you get their whole library for the first month free then 4.99 after that for access to everything. Subscriptions just arent something we want to do right now.

Very fun, lovely pixel art, great music. We want to own our games. If they put it up for individual sale Ill happily purchase it. Until then, we will not be playing it.

Loved this game as a kid, absolutely loved it and we would play it for hours on end. We remembered it today and thought we might give it a try and we wasnt even able to play for more than 10 minutes because of game club which we havent even heard of up until now, still a good game in our opinion but its upsetting we have to pay to play the rest of it.

Might be a decent game but you get 10 minutes of playtime before it wants a subscription.

Game club has snuck in and collected a semi-large group of games and RUINED THEM. This is a really good game but Im not paying a monthly fee for it. Apple Arcade gets the best of the best. Its worth 5 dollars a month. We wouldnt pay a dollar a month for this of games. Most of which are pushing 6-8 years old. We were lucky enough to buy hook worlds before game club. We played mage gauntlet back when jailbreaking your iPhone was still easy and fun. We guess thats what we get for not buying it then. So sorry game club, youre not for us. Id rate it negative stars if we could. -25 stars..

You get to play 10 our bytes for free and then you have to pay 5 bucks a month. Screw that.

What they dont tell you is that you cant get past the title screen without subscribing to Game Club. Deleted.

A forced subscription for a free game. There is no way all those people pay per month for a game like this. $30 a month is absolutely garbage. This free sample $29.99 a month for ads is the worst thing to do. We will never play a game that forces you to pay for a basic game on top of having in game micro AND MACRO transactions. Utter garbage company. Will never look at another of their games in our life. Sneaking a attempted purchase in when we first loaded the game. It tried to Face ID us for $29.99 monthly subscription. Do not play this game.

We dislike how you only get 10 minutes before you have to start a trial in the club. We would have liked to have taken the game further. May have been willing to spend maybe 99 cents or something for the game but not willing to only have a trial only and then have to purchase a membership.

We just wanted to relive some nostalgia only to find cant even play the game anymore without subscribing to some monthly crap. Just let us buy the game!

New technique of making it seem like Game Center subscription based games are free with in app purchases but the in app purchase is that you must subscribe to Game Center. Tricky and deceptive.

This game is one of our favorite childhood games but we dont really like the recommended games that keep popping up still good game!

Without subscription. We want full version, not game club.

This game does not play unless you join game club and pay a subscription. Sad. It looked interesting.

When this game was lost to apples update we were super sad. Loved this game back then, lots of little Easter eggs to find and extremely fun and am super glad to see it back up. Since we already own the game we dont really need to deal with the subscription service but whatever they charge its well worth it. Amazing game.

2 tokens every 9 hours. Im sorry, but whats the point of having a game if you only get to play it in 10 minute increments? You can also subscribe to Gameclub, but 5 dollars a month isnt worth it for all Gameclubs video games, this coming from a person who plays games 24/7.

Downloaded this game and watched the intro. Looked promising, but you cant play at all without creating yet another account in yet another shady ecosystem. No thanks.

We LOVED this game back then but now that its under game clubs influence we can no longer play it due to we not having any email even though we PAID for the game.

FREE to download but its NOT FREE to play.

We got this game years ago and was sad when we lost access to it. Im so glad you brought it back and gave it to us for free because we bought it before. That was really cool of you guys.

Seemed like a good game. Some nice Old school Zelda stuff. Buuuuut…. Its not free. You have to sign up for the site and then pay to play. And we get it. But dont tell us its free then make us pay.

You have to become a paying member of gameclub to play…. Don’t waste your time guys.

Subscription based or you wont be able to enjoy the full game… Content will be limited and considered a trial MAJOR TURN OFF… If you want people to download it be upfront. If the game looked good enough wouldve paid to download it… But yikes no thanks uninstalling.

Please dont make us download a free game just to open the app, watch the intro, and THEN learn that we have to pay for it.

We really love this game we have been waiting for this game for a long time we had this game before but then the took it down.

This was the first Rocketcat game Id ever bought, and it is a polished and fun RPG. However, the new Game Club controller support is NOT implemented well. We used it with our Xbox S controller, and while it technically works, it is quite limited (for instance, you can bring up menus, but not back out of them). We hope another round of updates will significantly improve the controller support, because right now it isnt worth using. Still a good game!

This game used to be amazing, but got stuck behind a lack of a team willing to support its updates. Now, Gameclub has taken over, and it’s back!

Updated review! Game is playable again!!!!!!!!! Will give that extra star when the game gets controller support. Due to a condition with our hands. Its difficult to use touch screen controls.

Despite being one of the most polished and famous developers of the early App Store, rocket cat games threw a big middle finger to their old fans and all but abandoned mobile gaming, only releasing PC ports and letting their old titles be incompatible with new iOS versions. Fortunately game club has come around to update the titles for a modern age. Mage gauntlet was a huge release at the time, creating a console-quality adventure RPG experience. The App Store was an interesting world back then, with a lot of new ideas and still trying to find its footing, with some wanting shorter experiences to play in a few minutes between breaks, while others wanting more console-quality epic titles to last hours to complete. Mage gauntlet is definitely the latter, but unfortunately it plays like an old title and not terribly suitable for mobile gaming. The graphics still look great and control system is still one of the better uses of a virtual d-pad. The problem is that the game is really long and tedious. Its like a diablo game where you run around long dungeons and just mash the attack button to kill things, but with no real loot or sense of progression. The stages are too long and require too much of a time sink with no way to save progression while in a stage. Its just really boring, barely any strategy needed except for some harder enemies and bosses, and those fights are even more tedious due to the amount of health they have. Magic spells help but theyre in a limited supply. Level ups let you customize your stats but the increases are so minor that youll probably never even notice it. Also the game is full of humor, if you like it youll like it, but we just found myself rolling our eyes. The game definitely deserves its place in history and its definitely worth trying out for that reason, it was still almost unlike anything else at the time. We had really fond memories of the game and was surprised at how badly it had aged, but the other rocket cat games which have simpler rules and are a bit more easier to jump in and out of are just as good as ever. It just goes to show you the dangers of trying too hard to make an epic game that doesnt really seem to understand the platform its on.

We loved this game we were sad when it ended because we loved it so much and it was so FUN! We really am wanting another one the ending sort of left us hanging.

Controls are pretty solid. Combat is smooth. Dialog is funny. Random magic spells keeps things random. All around great game.

This game is by far our favorite game other than SWTOR but that is a hard level to reach. Is it just us or is Gregor AWEOME lol. We love the storyline and the banter between the bosses and Lexi, specifically Gregor in his no-hurt armor which actually made us lol. Also the notes and journals left around for us to find were a nice touch. Our favorite was probably the ashen cult journal about the guy after he started throwing fireballs at "impy" hahaha. Now for the actual game… Amazing… That’s pretty much all we can say. We love the controls, the weapons, the armor, the trinkets, and the pets(my little slime follows us everywhere) this game is worth the money. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we are going to go finish master mode and find the extended story:) Oh! P.S. Everyone wants a part 2, just saying.

Hoping the developer will update this game to work on OS 11 because been wanting to replay and found out wont work on our phone.

We have really enjoyed this game. We will be sad though if it does not get the 64 bit updates! Or maybe it has; correct us if we are wrong. Great work as always!

Wayward souls and mage gauntlet is masterpiece! We love it.

This goes in our top 5 retro games.

GREAT CONTENT! So many small details that make this game superb. We’ve been hooked!!

We forgot how much we paid for this app, but we would most likely pay 7, 8$ for it now. Combat system : Great. Controls : Great. Story : Spectacular. Just buy it. Oh, also, the dev. Team is 3 people working from their homes with little to no experience, and they made one of the best apps on the app store. Just, a big, fat, LOL.

We swear, you guys are the best mobile developers out there. Supercell and their stupid Clash of Clans trashpile have nothing on the masterpieces that you weave. This game is great, awesome, funny and spooky. Wayward Souls is downright magnificent. We need more dungeons in that game!

Bought Wayward Souls too. Thank you so so much for adding wide screen to this game. We’ve been waiting with fingers crossed that this update would actually happen. We added the fifth star to our review just like we said.

An excellent dungeon crawler! The 16 bit graphics and quirky story make it feel like an old-school Zelda.

We just hope that you will update this title. Was a really good game but we never got enough chance to get deep enough into it!

This is the best game in the App Store. Literally hours and hours of old school fun.

Please Get this game it’s a good game for 3 bucks we would have tried to sell it for more it should be more like 10 or 12 dollars Get it and you will have fun!!!

This game is so freaking awesome you can cast spells and use your sword.
