Hoist your sails and load the cannons as you embark for adventure on the high seas! Can you defeat your friends and best your enemies to become the Admiral of the Fleet?

Naval Tactics: Captains of the Spanish Main is set in the Golden Age of Sail, where stout ships of wood were crewed by even stouter men. Nations at peace and at war engaged in naval actions on the high seas. Naval Tactics brings the proud tradition of great naval board games such as Wooden Ships and Iron Men to iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch.

TACTICAL WAR BOARD GAME

From the hexagonal playing field to the potentially game changing Captain’s Cards, Naval Tactics is a board game to its very roots. To succeed you will need to take your time, think three moves ahead, and mind the weather gauge!

Hear from the Players – Naval Tactics Reviews

Find out what gamers are saying about Naval Tactics:

If you want to get a feeling for a real fighting sail game like those you read about in the Hornblower series or the Master and Commander books (and movie), THIS is your game. So good it is almost a simulation, but great fun and you can learn the tactics of 17th, 18th and early 19th century naval combat. Take your time learning the game against the AI before you play with humans as this game is deep and accurate. One of the absolute best combat simulation games on the iPad or anywhere else, PC, miniatures, or paper and pencil.

This is, hands down, the best turned-based naval warfare game out there. A friendly user community is waiting to help young sailors over the learning curve, which is present… But worth the short climb! Cant recommend it highly enough.

Just a wonderful game for a large size iPad. Clean attractive interface. Simple design, with nice nuances as you get deeper. We’ve only played against the AI, not online, the former being our preferred way to relax with a strategy game. We almost always beat the AI now, but it remains a challenge to do it without losing any of our ships. We’ve read every Patrick OBrien story, of course, as well as the Hornblower series way back when. We find the game plays true to the strategy in the books, and we suspect to reality as well. The suicide missions by small fast enemy ships are a nice component of the AIs strategy. One minor quibble is that boarding enemy ships still strikes us as too difficult, because they maintain much of their firepower to the end and tend to be too dangerous to approach to knock out sails and crew. Also, there doesnt seem to be any bonus for having your cannons pre-loaded as you go into a turn, as compared to loading and firing in the same round. There are helpful warnings when you are about to leave cannons unfired or when ships are about to collide, but we still often forget to press the crucial combat button after a round of focusing on repairs or sail. Very modest price for many many hours of replayability, with no requests to buy more features or annoying requests for a review. Thank you for the wonderful app!

Wonderful game with many possible scenarios. If you like naval history, tactics and strategy, this is the game for you! Captain your ship one-on-one, or direct your fleet in multi-ship battles. Never a dull moment!

We shall beat to quarters. Thrilling nautical action from the age of sail!

If you enjoy strategy board games or war games, Naval Tactics is for you. It’s like playing Wooden Ships & Iron Men, but without having to deal with all the numbers and paperwork. The Captain’s Cards add just the right touch of tactical variety to give you an edge when played smartly. Seven years later, and we’ve still found no other iOS games that compare.

Battles available for all skill levels, including practice against the AI. All are free, but also has rated games for a small fee, to increase your stripes all the way to Admiral and beyond. This is the best Naval game in the App store.

Requires better balancing of matchmaking. If unable to provide better balancing of matchmaking, esteem points should be awarded or taken away according to the difficulty of opponent. For example, a rank of master should not lose esteem points for losing to the admiral of the fleet or if a lieutenant wins against a rear admiral, the lieutenant should get a large promotion. Ranks should be reset for players after a year of inactivity. Lastly we need more battle scenarios. (Historic battles would be nice)

This game is deceptively simple – at first you load your guns, charge your opponent, and unload broadside after broadside until the yellow-bellies surrender. Later, however, you agonize over each turn, wondering if your frigate can handle one more barrage before you have to fall off to make repairs. You begin to love the firepower of a third-rate but cringe at how slowly it turns. You debate with yourself for hours whether to try to shred your opponents sails to make him a sitting duck at your mercy or maim his crew with gunshot and board him… We could write more but we have moves to make before the wind shifts on us!

Harken back to the days of the tall ships, and build a fleet to take on other players, or play one of the many scenarios, each with their own challenge. The integrated help shows you the basics, and beginner scenarios allow you to learn piloting, maneuvering, firing on enemies, boarding enemy ships, all at your own speed. Players of this game are probably the MOST helpful, mature, enthusiastic we’ve come across in iPad/iPhone world. Dont understand something? Ask in chat, and it will be answered as players come online (It is asynchronous multiplayer, so players tend to hop on/off to play their turns when notified). And actually learned the game and its nuances by simple asking to be shown the ropes. And wow. What a deep and satisfying game this is. If you love turn-based strategy, this is a great investment. We understand that the developer frequently updates, so really looking forward to seeing this game grow and mature.

We rated this one star at first, thought it inscrutable. Just upgrade it to 5 stars, the more we play the more we love it. 3 player, with lots of ships, complex formations, it’s really enjoyable, and is SO different from WW2 games that we also love. The more we played it the more nuances we discovered and the more fun this became. It’s what we hoped for when we bought it, but couldn’t see at first. Really well done, tricky, challenging…… We play a lot of these games and this is in our top 20.

Fun and challenging but the game was to slow and the maps were too big… If the game was more cqc we would give 1/2 more star just missing that this is awesome feeling! It came very close! We did enjoy our time online and the community is very helpful! Worth $5 :)

We love this game. We play it as often as possible. But, recently, we have tried battle royale (6 player battle) and it acts fine until in round 0 we are setting up player six, and we have captain cards and ships picked out, and we push next, and the game freezes. PLEASE GET RID OF THIS!

We really wish more ships were added to the game and there aren’t enough single player missions. It is very otherwise.

It is a good concept but it takes too long to complete an action. This makes the game almost unplayable.

Difficulty in getting guns to fire.

Yet another solid game by this developer. We’re a huge fan of tall ship naval games.

After you learn it, amazing game. Give it a chance!

Another gem from Chimera software! This game is straight Naval warfare. 40 turns of hardcore naval battle without being watered down by all the extras other games of this type have to offer. Think Pirates! Without treasure hunts. Very challenging multiplayer experience with a very friendly and helpful following. We’re hooked! Buy this app and we wish you fair winds and following seas!

Wow this game is fun, very addicting just playing vs AI, we havent even gone head to head for real yet. Not clear on a few things like how repairs work, what certain cards like Tarred Sails mean, etc. But overall a tremendous game, Im loving it.

One-man Dev is very involved and committed to updates. Rapid-fire updates so far based on user feedback. So much potential! Love it.

The FIRST game we’ve had in 3 years that instantly made us want to play against another human in addition to AI. We think we might be addicted. One more turn please. It’s backed by a fantastic developer as well.

We’re a big fan of tall sail games. We’ve played all the App Store has to offer, and this one finally gets it right! Others have been too arcade like and not enough strategy. Naval Tactics nails it! The board game like mechanics just plain work. Think chess, but with lots of cannons… And boarding parties! Considering this is a 1.0 release, it’s rock solid! If Chimerasoft’s other games are any indication, this game will keep getting better and better! That’s why we got it while on sale.. :)

Everything about this game is good, now if only we could get good at it…

Tough as nails AI, but the online play is great! It’s got great depth and complexity while being really simple to play. We just get sucked in to turn after turn.

This game took us a few trys to get the hang of it. It is not your typical game, but it is fun and challenging. We never knew how the wind and overall manpower played in the old sailing days. There are no lasers but if you like a historical game with all the realities in it, this is for you.

Naval Tactics is just a delight. So much turn-based, hexy nautical combat goodness!

As a trained naval officer, let us say that this is an excellent period game with a great balance between easy to understand rules and excellent possibility for more advanced game play. The sounds and graphics are top notch, but the core of the game is solid and well worth he price of entry.

Rocco is came back in updating of Orion, so regard this we bought Naval Tactics to support Chimera Softaware! But played a while we can say that N.T. Is also other Gem from Chimera Software!

Meh, not our thing. Couldnt even figure out to shoot and got bored quickly. Bought to support his other game, SO.

Seems to be a solid game… At least no bugs have been found yet. It covers the basics of what is needed to make a decent age of fighting sale game. Needs single player campaigns and a multi-level difficulty setting for the IA opponent.

We don’t care so much that there is lack of single player. We played one hotseat game against myself to get a feel for it, and we like what we see so far. We’re a big Hero Academy fan, mostly because we play against friends. If we can get them playing this also it would be a five star. Until then it is four, unless we are totally wowed when we play some online MP.

Top Notch but needs single player campaign.

The mechanics of the game are excellent and entertaining. The interface has some rough patches and needs polishing. Given the game’s potential, the relative lack of scenarios is really disappointing. Like so many apps, it feels about 3/4 baked. Here’s hoping it gets finished soon.

We’ve been a long-time fan of Starbase Orion, and Chimera Software has done it again with Naval tactics. While NT is a completely differnet type of game (SO is focused on building your empire with combat limited to giving simple orders that are carried out behind the scenes) while NT is all about the combat. There are a number of differnet mission types: 1v1, 1v1v1, 2v2, 3v3, merchant escort (protect or destroy the merchants), and Sink the Pirate, as well as a couple of missions based on real historical battles. The game is simple enough to be accessible to anyone who enjoys strategy games, but deep enough that a player will benefit from learning tactics and knowing how to use the wind etc to their benefit. We expect a vibrant, dedicated community for online play the same as SO has had for a long time.

This review is acknowledging that currently this game has no real tutorial. Other than that a fantastic game with a ton to offer. Give yourself 20 mins to experiment and you will have the hang of it. If you liked Ace Patrol give this a try.

This review will possibly go up as we learn how to play. No tutorial makes it difficult to learn. Hope to see some improvements soon. There’s even spelling mistakes in the help menu. With some improvements this game will be worth the price! ***update #1. Figured out finally how to move the ships etc. Still wierd. We chart a course or direct a cannon, then the ai gets to go and shoot us and after that what we planned happens. Seems like a strange way of playing and hard to plan cause they always move after you plan your course. Rotating ships is poorly marked. Should be labeled rotate left or right, not "route 1" !!!

We loved star base orion. This game must be a niche thing, we’re sure some folks are gonna love it. Personally, we found it unpleasant in every way. If you like boat games where you can’t win, ever and action that is more effective than a horse tranquilizer at sedating you, well, this game is right up your alley.

Possibly the most boring game we’ve ever played.

When we first got the game we thought it would be a good warship game but number one it has disappointing graphics number two it is very complicated and number three its 5$!!!! Thats outrageous! Do not buy!
