In Potion Explosion, you will explode ingredients, trigger chain reactions and gather it all in your caldron. You will then use your hard-earned unicorn tears, fairy dandruff and other magical ingredients to craft powerful mixtures with wacky effects! May the best wizard win!
HOW TO PLAY
At the beginning of the game, each player is given potions to complete with specific effects and ingredients. You will have to select ingredients in the dispenser; once your selected ingredient is removed, the ingredients above will slide down. If two ingredients of the same nature collide, they explode and you get them too! You can then use your ingredients to cook up your potions. You only have a limited tank space to store remaining ingredients from one turn to another, so choose carefully! Once a potion is completed, you score points, get to use its powerful effect and pick another potion to craft. The wizard with the most points wins!

Updated for version 3.2.3: Still many bugs. Wasnt worth finishing the one game we attempted to play. Potion of Prismatic Joy still extremely difficult to put marbles into the flask. Potion of Lavamancing locked up when we only had two marbles of a column to remove. We force quit the app and resumed. The app returned to a much earlier point in the game. We are forced to play the red character, but when we start the game, the opening screen shows both the AI and us as the yellow character. Then the game starts and Im the red character. It would be nice if we could be the green or blue character and rotate through the other colors for the AI. We’ve updated to iOS 16.5. A few notes: we only play the base game in offline mode against AIs. We are on an iPhone X running iOS 16.4.1 (a). Thats all the specific info Im volunteering because, as we stated in our title, we didnt agree to participate in beta testing this app. Yeah, thats how egregious some of the bugs are. This doesnt even feel like a release candidate, its that bad. We dont know what is going on behind the scenes. Maybe Asmodee Digital had unrealistic deadlines for the app to go live. Maybe all of Horrible Guilds dev and testing budget was spent on the online aspect of the game. (Im guessing thats where the sellable user data/money is.) Maybe Horrible Guild is embracing its name too literally. Maybe theres some other combination of behind-the-scenes events that caused this buggy-as-fsck app to go live. We dont know. All we know is releasing this app as it stands was the wrong call. Its like yall didnt even bother testing basic offline functionality. But yall need to fix it.
Our friends and we were very excited to finally have the app backhowever after adding them as buddies again we cant start a game with them. It just tells us we have no buddies and we should totally get some. One of them sent ME an invite, we accepted/joined, and game says Waiting for (me) to join game Argh!!
We’ve been playing this game for years on and off. This most recent update reset all of our player achievements that we’ve accumulated over the years, the music in the game no longer works, and gameplay lags/glitches despite force-closing and having no other apps open. We dont know what the developers were going for, but this is not an update, it is a major downgrade. Its not a problem with our phone, since we have the most recent iPhone running the most current iOS version. Extremely disappointed. Do better, developers.
This is a nice twist on the match game genre. Very clever and fun. Lots of depth but still accessible for casual gamers. Great job! Solo play on our XS Max with iOS 13 works great, no issues. We cant speak to multiplayer since we dont do that, but the base game via solo play is great.
We enjoy the game, and have about a 90% first place rate for winning. We always choose random potions and we would also like for the expansion to be able to have random professors.
We dont quite get it: why is there an average of 3.4 for this lovely game? Its a really aesthetic and artistic game; the animations, the music, hell even the queer names are so great! It doesnt have any bugs (at least in the offline mode), doesnt consume too much battery (even has an option for saving it) and is a lightweight app. If you have eyes for pure sense of humor, artistry and sorcery, definitely get this; you wont regret it.
We got sick of all the IAP casual games with their time delays, ads, and booster backs. You have to pay for this game and the expansion, but after that it just works. There are some more rules upfront than your average game, but that means there is also deeper strategy. Took us a day to be able to beat the hard AIs about 80% of the time. Might move on to multi-player soon.
The game cartoons we thought were very good. The potions, the effects, the orbs, and the way you play we thought was very creative. We could not think of anything more entertaining.
Not understanding the low reviews. The game looks and sounds awesome for the theme! The 5th element expansion adds a wonderful new depth to the game. Just wish there was more online players. Great game!

We saw complaints about bugs from 2 years ago so we guess theyre not going to fix the freezing problem. Thats too bad because this is a great implementation of a board game to an app.
Our family and we love this game, both the physical and app versions. Our only issue is that with the newest update we can not complete the Graduatus Classis Cautionis achievement. We’ve won multiple games against the bots at various difficulties and not triggered the Professor often enough to preclude the achievement, but it doesnt click to complete. Great game, just annoying for someone who likes that 100% completion! Im on an iPhone XS and do not play online, if that matters.
UPDATE: Have not had a syncing issue since last update. 3 -> 4 stars (-) Async games can get out of sync. (-) Crashes. (-) Loading screens are cute, but take awhile to load. (+) Nice UI (+) Multi-player sorta works, unlike other Asmodee Digital products. (+) Game logic is smooth. (-) Cannot finish asynchronous game because same turn happens over and over. Nice game. Too bad about persistent multiplayer issues.
This game so awesome and entertaining. Love playing it with our kids! We wish it had an UNDO button because its so easy to touch an unintended ingredient by mistake. Also, the APP hangs sometimes at the end of the game.
Extremely fun game. It made us run out the next day to buy the physical games. The one thing this game sorely needs is an Undo button. We would limit any Undo button to only going back one move maximum and only if someone hits the Undo button within a time limit of say 5 seconds or so. If they put that in, it would vastly improve the game with the easy to make missteps that are immediately apparent after tapping. It would be like allowing someone about to drink a potion to get it to their lips but change their mind before drinking it when they immediately realize it wont have the effect they thought it would. It would also allow someone to put a marble they accidentally pulled back in the rack (if done within the time limit).
If it had notifications it would be 5 stars.
It would be terrific if the bugs could get cleaned up. We’ve installed the game numerous times to try to get the bugs resolved, and each time its reinstalled there’s a different kind of bug causing problems. Otherwise, we’re really enjoying this game and the expansion!
This game is super fun and addicting, but the app could use some work. First off, we cant add a buddy even though Im playing them online currently. When we type their username, it says their username is not found. Second, this game does not alert you when its your turn. So you will have to randomly check to see if its your turn. Third, sometimes the game freezes and you have to start your match all over.
Where are the notifications? Am we missing something when it comes to enabling them?
When the game works it is amazing. However, it is stuck on the load screen now and nothing seems to fix it. It was a good run.
Ill up our review to 5 stars when the developer adds two simple things: the ability to turn on notifications when its your turn to take your move, and game history/stats. These are so basic that we cant understand how they were left out. Otherwise everything is great – hopefully we get another update.
We really like this game, but it has some bugs that need to be fixed. When we create an offline game with a bot, if the bots wins, everything works fine. But when we win, the screen is stuck loading forever so we dont get the official win! Its honestly really disappointing. Whats the point in playing if we cant even win?
While everything looks beautiful, it isnt a good layout of the game. You cant see what your opponent has unless you click on them. Too much of the screen is taken up making the players layout look good an not enough is devoted to showing the other players. Game needs to play in landscape mode really with the sides of the screen showing all 4 players and what they have (at all times) without requiring you to click on them. The dragging of marbles to your potions is buggy and refuses to work sometimes. This needs to be fixed also.
We love this game. Was excited to try The Fifth Expansion, but it is buggy. Freezes up part way through turns. Wont allow any normally allowed actions (sometimes triggered by using little help action). The Prof. Prissyman achievement doesnt work. No instructions on activating Prof. Humblescore (how do you discard ingredients)?
Great game, but the app has a tendency to crash during gameplay. Tonight, its crashed/closed 3 times in the last hour. Please fix!
Written early July 2018 we just recently bought the expansion for potion explosion and am excited to be familiar w the new professors and spells. Two out of the four games we’ve played have been stuck where we had to quit. One wouldnt let us fill our potions w either the wild ghost color or even using the wild potion drink. Another we used the professor that lets you exchange a color for a wild if your viles are full at end of turn. But after doing so, it didnt change, and kept w the music and animation to insert into the ghost cantor w out being able to move on. Im happy w the base game. But am unhappy we paid money for an expansion that is unusable.
Either Im terrible at this game, or the easy difficulty is WAY too hard. We cant win a single game after playing more than 10 times. We finish the physical version with between 70-100 points a game, easily. Please reassess the difficulty.
We bought it for push notifications when our turn comes up. We hear they work on Android, but they dont for us on iOS even though the app asked for permissions to display notifications, and theyre granted.
The update to allow for the Fifth Ingredient has created bugs that have ruined the last three online games we have played with our wife. Im looking forward to getting those squashed so that we can enjoy this SUPERB implementation of a thoroughly enjoyable game!
Our wife and we play this often, but tonight we encountered a bug that weve seen in the past we were watching our very close scores (89 to 84 with one more 5 point potion to go), our wife scored her last potion for 5 points, got a skill token, and exchanged with the ghostly cauldron twice. Game says we beat her 95 to 89. It swapped us!
Fun game, but the app is extremely glitchy.
We really liked the game until it froze and after forced restart we had to start game over… Then it happened again.
We love the game Potion Explosion. Really fun. But the app is laggy and difficult to use. Im on an iPad Pro so it should be running smoothly. Animations constantly drop frames. Game freezes up all the time, making it difficult to actually make our moves. Please fix your performance issues ASAP.
The base game was fun, but after downloading the expansion (potions), it crashes every time we load a game. The expansion is separated into two payments of $1.99. This is greedy and un-necessary. And with the game being unplayable asmodee shows us what they really care about (the bottom line). We will be contacting the app store to get our money back. Get the base game, but be wary of frequent crashes.
Its easy to play against the AI, even when its set to the most difficult level. You can play it for a little less than a month before it gets boring. The online game isnt played in real time so you have to wait for hours for your turn. We wouldnt recommend it. Unless you want a new fun game that will last for maybe a month, at most.
Every time we win a match it freezes up and won’t score the game. I’d give it more stars if it worked properly.
We’ve been playing it quite a bit. Games will freeze and you wont be able to finish them 50% of the time in our experience. Seems like it just happens when you are about to beat the AI, but maybe Im just salty. Fun game if it worked.
This is a fun game, but it frequently freezes up after the final turn, before showing the final score, which is extremely disappointing and anticlimactic. Apparently this has been a bug for over 2 years that remains unaddressed. It looks like this game has been abandoned.

Lots of achievements but most dont even say what you need to do to GET the achievement. THATS DUMB. And theres NO HIGHSCORE for offline vs ai. DUMB!!!
We paid $3.99 to play this game online with other people. It was adversities as such. Password rest, uninstalled the app, nothing. Super disappointed.
We cant play a single game without being prompted to pay an additional $1.99 per professor??? Thats not right. If we already paid a fee of $3.99 to get the game in the first place, we should be able to use the app. We would like a refund.

We have tried the tutorial several times to understand this game which Im unfamiliar with. Unfortunately we get to a point where no end turn prompt appears. This appears in the offline games as well. Am we missing something? Everything else seems well made but theres one heck of a bug which keeps many people from playing. If we could ask for our money back we would.

Love this game but can’t get it to launch. Using an iPad mini with iOS 9.3.5 and app crashes constantly once pressing Play. It allows us to set up the players and settings, we can also login to our online account, but the actual gameplay won’t launch. Is there a fix coming for iOS 9.x versions?
