Scattergories Review
We have played this game for years its one of our favorite. This game puts you on your toes and makes you think. We gave it 5 stars cause its fun and challenging.
The fundamentals of this wonderful game truly make on speechless. The games strongly built integrity shows truth about ones self in such a simple way. Think about a bird gliding through the sky. You are the bird, the game is the sky. Im so surprised that this phenomenon of a game has spent its years with seldom stars. – a bored 12 year old.
It is super fun but also hard so never boring! It is fun to challenge yourself and a little bit of friendly competition is good for the soul!!
We love this game we just wish there was a option to make it like the old windows one we miss the old school style of it.
Fun but over the top with ads and hard to get points. We realize its a pay model game but it could be a little less intrusive with ads.
The game needs updating (the Animated Feature Film category doesnt include anything as recent as Onward (2020)). They also need to fine tune their Artist category so that it no longer accepts actors, musicians and reality stars with no demonstrated art skills (like Amy Adams and Kim Kardashian).
Scattergories is one of our favorite games, so its nice to be able to play in the app when we cant talk our husband into playing at home. We love that there are different versions of the game you can choose from, and some that are more competitive than others. Its not perfect, though. There are times that we submit a dispute for an answer we think should be correct (like Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys for a rock n roll album), but never get/see that anything happens from the dispute – we think we have heard back from a dispute once over the three years we’ve had the app. Or see 2 players both get points for two different spellings of the same word, maybe to account for different dialects of English? Overall its super fun and Ill keep playing.
Both fun and annoying and buggy. Overpriced at $4 per WEEK to get rid of ads. Could be great and popular at reasonable price and less bugs.
So fun! We loved playing this game when we were younger, and having it on our phone where we can play anytime is even better! A great way to have fun and kill time and we love seeing other peoples answers and learning from them. Also, the customer support is AMAZING! 10 out of 10 would recommend!
We really liked this game and the way it was set up. The questions are hard to answer and thats what makes the game fun. But we will have to say that there are some bugs. Sometimes when we try to open the app, the screen turns black or it kicks us out. Also, when we check to see the ones that we got wrong, it says that we completely misspelled our word even thought for a fact that a did not spell it like that. Those are just some bugs that we hope to get fixed but we sort of recommend this game.
The game NEEDS more categories it get boring with the same categories. PLEASE add more.
Maybe just tell us in which year you stopped updating this app? Cuz with all the NUMEROUS film and tv categories it doesnt seem like the app recognizes anything released after 2016. Will Smith was in King Richard, Im sure of it. Meanwhile youll count countries that dont exist as valid answers for countries (wales is not a country)! Categories like Us Airlines when there are like 10 Us airlines left and your app hasnt even heard of half of them? (Again would love to know what year we are supposed to be playing in!) axe it! Please update ur pop culture cats and add new cats cuz the game gets boring after a while when its the same thing over and over.
A fun game to increase ones vocabulary, but it apparently does not do math. Start with 200 coins, play free rounds in challenge friends, end up with not enough coins to continue. Start with 72 coins, play a single 30 coin duel end up with 17 coins.
Scattergories has the potential to be a great app. Unfortunately there are some problems. One is that it rejects answers that are not in any way obscure. We answered our Brilliant Friend as an answer to the name of a book category. It was not misspelled, it was not a plural and it did not start with an article. It is a popular novel (popular enough to be made into a Netflix series.) Scattergories rejected this answer several months ago and we disputed it. Tonight we used the same answer primarily to see what would happen. It rejected it again. Even worse, and although Scattergories usually accepts last names only, it has rejected Kelly (as in Gene) as a movie actor, and Domingo (as in Placido) as a famous singer and (the big one) Harrison (as in George ) as a famous singer. It obviously needs a larger database from which to check answers. The other thing we dont like about the app is the extremely limited number of categories. The board game has many more than the app. It would be great to see some new ones from time to time.
We love the game, but the app is a bit buggy. It can be slow at times, also sometimes the app even changes your answer. Also sometimes you can dispute an answer, but its not among the players, it goes to the apps service team for them to dispute. Doesnt make sense.
You have to take turns which defeats the purpose of the game.
The hint power up is not useful and if you use it, your answers will not submit which is SO FRUSTRATING cause then you CAN NOT PLAY. It is so stupid and needs to be fixed, we recommend Blitz which is way better. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS APP Or we WILL MAKE YOU ;)
The game itself is fun. The rounds are Challenging and thought provoking. The ads after every. Single. Round. No thank you! The ads are longer than the playing time! We get that some apps need ads to keep the content free, but this is ridiculous. The app also takes quite a bit of time to load, but that isnt too much of an issue.
Too many issues. Almost every round, it misspells words we type in. When we type it, we make sure its spelled correctly, but at the end of the game it will show some of the words without one of the letters in them & completely messes up the round. Also, there needs to be more categories. Some of the categories are awful. TV vampires? Seriously?! Dumb. Also, Ill use coins to buy things like extra time or fill-ins. It will tell us we have 30 of them, but after using just 5, it says Im out of them!
The game is fun and enjoyable, but the technical issues keep us from wanting to play this app. The keyboard does not properly function, we have to continually reboot our phone to refresh the app, and the leader boards are often unavailable. Why create a game that doesnt work? Thats a question each developer should be asking themselves. Sorry Scattergories, but you lost another customer.
Misspellings & plural words arent allowed but our opponent was able to use plural answers. We answered parking as something at a circus and was not Allowed as it claimed misspelling. It was spelled correctly. Dumb game.
Guess they make sure you can win only once in awhile now to try and get you to buy more coins? Thats the only reason we can figure it not taking obviously correct, not misspelled answers. And despite the dispute button you can never dispute anything. Also if you get body part and the letter b buttocks and butt are blurred out and marked as unacceptable. So guess its a bad word in this game.
Too many fake players. The missions were fun until start going up again bogus players constantly – scoring over 300 pts in 45 seconds with 20+ answers in a row earning 20 points for ultra rare answers. Waste of time when not real competition.
The game would be significantly more enjoyable if it werent glitching so bad. On the game main menu, the option boxes exist without words. So you dont know what type of game youre selecting. When you do play a game, most of the prompts dont populate with words. Itll say R but no category is provided! Haha so its virtually unplayable at this point. We enjoyed the game before all the glitches but we cant play it at all anymore. Time to delete.
We wrote in a bogus answer and still got the points and the win because we were faster. There should be a reveal of your opponents answers at the end and shown what words earned points.
We paid for a weekly subscription and it only lasted 3 days. No answer from developers. This game seems like they developed it then let it die! No new categories ever it is sooo redundant its hard to believe anyone would play. Its either bots or cheaters who continually play making it impossible for honest players to win. Correct answers are constantly counted as wrong, and there is no response when you dispute it. What a mess this game is!!!
… But the allowance of ridiculously… And obviously wrong answers is keeping us from enjoying this game. This version will also not accept correct answers. As a teacher and someone who ADORES books, we are a prolific reader and have all kinds of reference books. In a game such as this, we expect that things such as WORMS, MITES and TICKS not be accepted as correct answers for INSECTS… But what is even more egregious is the allowance of responses that have NOTHING to do with the topic. Some opponents just type in seemingly ANYTHING that comes to their minds and get credited for it. This game has some fun features, but they do not make up for its essential shortcomings.
We wanted to use this with our team. But even though it lets you invite friends or give out a code, it only lets you play 1v1.
If you get the category of types of poisonous PLANT dont you dare put any plants. Instead try poisonous worms, poisonous caterpillars, poisonous slugs, poisonous snails, poisonous frogs, ect. Those are the answers they accept for points. If you get the category of types of grilled foods dont even think about trying steak, chicken, or grilled cheese. Instead try the obvious answer of papaya. According to them meat doesnt get grilled. Ingredients in hummus DO NOT try the obvious answers of salt, garlic, chickpeas/garbanzo beans, olive oil/oil. The only answer know that works is tahini. We could go on but we digress. Whoever or whatever is in charge of filtering answers should be replaced!
No matter how many times we play or any day we get the exact same categories every time and Im missing the daily challenges.
Lots of problems. Essentially not very user friendly, they need an update or option to play locally with multiple friends at the same time in the same room. This is probably playing one on one games with your grandma every other Sunday, but for a party or group setting its terrible. For the developers, we have experience in app game design, if you want some pointers from a humble scategories player let us know.
02/11/2023 maker and players need to read rules! Players: For reviews like big black rocks it isnt accepted as those are adjectives (descriptive words). The answers need to be singular nouns lmao. Otherwise players could use big bad bold beautiful rocks and get 18 points! Extra Points for unusual is because using the letter more than once in a single answer or because its a rarely given answer. Why is that hard to understand? Makers (who we’ve never seen respond): Literally nothing has changed in over 5 years. Pro Wrestler? Who knows anymore, its not that popular. Even the board game updated its list for the new century. Plural answers arent supposed to be accepted, but players cheat and you allow it. Unique answers arent given points and always need disputedeven the actual examples from the original game arent acceptable! Bird being with J? Jailbird and we have to dispute it every time that we restart the game, along with others that we disputed and won in the past. Why cant we challenge others answers yet? Not much has changed. Same categories. Same frustrations. We started over yet again to see if anything has changed. Save yourself time and frustration and do NOT get this game/app. It is by far the WORST GAME APP IVE EVER HAD!!! We installed the last update and FOR THE THIRD TIME ALL OF MY COINS AND PROGRESS DISAPPEARED!!! THIRD TIME! We should have erased when it did it the first time, after we spent eons to get to LEVEL 99level 99 FOR PETES SAKE and POOF! GONE! THOUSANDS OF COINS, GONE! BACK TO LEVEL ONE 3x!!! All of the frames, years of them, we earned by competing and winning tournaments, you guessed it, GONE!!! When it kicks you back to the beginning, there are no daily challenges, opponent game play or tournaments. One game option and a measly 100 coins. After we earned thousands. So irate. We have never had so many issues with any game. We even wanted to purchase the option to get rid of ads, but never had as everyone says ADS STILL SHOW UP AFTER YOU PAY! Im buying a package from the makers of Two Dots, et. Al, not that we need to, but to give money and show support to a company that makes a great, reliable product. We’ve had this app for years and nothing ever improvesin fact, the problems get worse. This used to be our favorite app and Id play almost daily over morning coffee. Id even set reminders for favorite challengesTuesday Name Game. Our old review is listed below: Crashes constantly, causing one to lose coins/game/rank. They NEVER take any suggestions. The one the did use, they just removed–the ability to dispute your answers–which are often changed via autocorrect. Scattergories IS our favorite board game AND WAS favorite gaming app. There is a feedback forum where users can post ideas or gripes about the game. Like the fact you are unable to chat with or challenge certain players to a duel. Nor can you block anyone. We do not want do create a Facebook page just to do so. TPTB do respond to the comments on feedback forum. They reply, BUT never change anything about app or take ideas into consideration. Once they change the couple of suggestions that I, and others, have repeatedly asked for, we will change our rating again. But they won’t. We’ve played for ages and same old problems. We expected so much more from this app that is ruining the name of the Hasbro company.
The creators of this app most likely did not make it past 8th grade! There are so many wrong answers it is ridiculous. One example, saying an egg sandwich is not a sandwich. Lol we eat them every morning from the deli! Anyway, there are so many flaws in this app for us to waste anymore time.
We love this game but some of our answers were not given points even though they were legit. Example: Hildago was not accepted as a movie tigle.
We like this game. We like that its fast and free. We do not mind watching 15, 30 or 45 second ads for it to be free. But we dont want to 3,4 minutes closing them or getting back to the game. This is a big problem and a deal breaker. Talk to your advertisers please.
Overall this is a fun, easy to play digital version of the classic. A few things that stand out to us is Im having to dispute answers often as their list of acceptable answers seems small. For instance we got the letter D and one of the categories was Authors. We put down Delia Owens, a new but wildly successful author who wrote Where the Crawdads Sing. This answer was not accepted! The developers need to update their lists more frequently. Also the user experience of the feedback form for submitting a dispute is terrible. Better modal navigation and active text box (while typing) with full use of an insertion point (blinking vertical line) would be strongly encouraged. The experience of playing with a friend is mediocre at best, broken at worst. When we submit our answers it sometimes wont show on our friends phone as their turn. And we cant remove players that Im still waiting on, the best we can do is keep nudging. Other apps will implement a time limit for matches.
Very limited in acceptance of answers in every category.
Fun game. In-app ads play sound even when sound is off on phone. Id like the game a lot more if that didnt occur.
Very frustrating that we keep keeping the same letters over and overespecially the letter O.
Put in French for school subject and our opponent just typed F and it cancelled our answers out. Put in Kyiv for a capitol city, didnt accept our answer. Its sorta fun to play for a little while, if youre a fan Scattergories. Just be prepared to be confused by the scoring sometimes. Also, categories frequently repeat.
We have been marked for wrong answers many times and try to dispute and the ap will not allow. For example, movie star that begins with E: Emma Stone. Island hot spots that start with M: Middle Bass Island in Lake Erie Ohio. Enough to make us delete the ap.
This game would be super addictive if it didnt repeat the same category groups. Some ideas- songs from the 60s (or whatever decade) Things you find in an office, famous movie directors, etc just bring us something new.
We really enjoyed the app at first but too many glitches and inconsistencies where answers are concerned to continue at this point. It will accept an answer as correct in one game then it will tell us the same exact answer to the same question will be wrong in another game. Also tired of not getting credit for answers we KNOW are correct. We’ve looked up a lot of answers just to make sure and they are getting it wrong! Clean it up and Ill come back.
Way too many ads, while we expect there to be ads for free apps, this has too many. We actually considered buying the ad-free version but couldnt find it in the App Store or within the app, even though the FAQs indicate there is one. The same categories seem to cont in IOUs our cycle through. We have the board game version there are plenty of categories without repeating then so frequently. The FAQ explain what to do if you want to dispute decision on your entry. This process doesnt work. And we’ve seen several examples of other players have words accepted which arent related to the category. However, now Im glad we didnt purchase it. Im in the hospital and was looking for a game to pass the time. For the last two days it did this. Went to play it this afternoon and all of a sudden we dont have enough coin to play a single round. While we didnt like the first things we commented on we were willing to put up with it as long as we could play. Since we cant play, Ill probably delete the app.
It asked us for a movie and the letter was P and the first thing we thought of was the Netflix movie Purple Hearts and it told us it was against the rules. Same with front breaks for a car part that starts with f. Literally most of our games have been losses because it thinks everything is against the rules. They say u have to be like 18 to play. So why not make it a little more mature instead of childish.
This is an insane price for only a so-so game. There are too many looong ads, much longer than the rounds themselves and the price for no ads is outrageous.
We loved this game at first, but now, every single time we play a tournament or daily challenge, Im paired with the same person over and over. He or she wins every single round because they must play all the time and know high point answers for every single category and letter. So frustrating and annoying – we would like to play different players each time. Just deleted the app.
Scattergories is our all time favorite board game, but this app totally ruins it. Theres way too many advertisements. We cant even play more than one round without having to watch a minute long (Or longer) ad for the same dumb game over and over again. What a shame.
We love the board game & the app is just as fun, except for all the issues others have mentioned: buggy, crashes/freezes a lot, not enough variety of categories & letters, annoying ads, won disputes only get 5 coins, etc. I’d give it a 5 if they’d fix some of those issues. Update 5 years later exact same issues, especially crashes a lot – more than all our other game apps. :(
Mostly fun. Dont understand some of the reward functions. Would like to see more variety of questionsI cant name any billionaires, and dont care to learn any of their names. Why is that question always coming up? Our main frustration is that it has an option to dispute, but it doesnt do anything. Maybe allow feedback and make updates based on that? At least change it to explanation because thats what it is, and it isnt even good at that. Its pretty particular about spelling which is hard when youre trying to spell names and obscure words at a fast pace. Why do you need to know our location? Just noticed that. Might delete.
