Scotland Yard Reviews

Please please please fix your multiplayer interface. Bought the game to play as a family. We are used to the seedless integration of games like Ticket to Ride. This game would be fantastic but the multiplayer mode is a mess and makes connection impossible. Frustrated because we bought this for multiplayer specifically. Please fix your multiplayer!!!

Should be able to dismiss the final newspaper announcement so as to view the board.

Save your money on this game. It lacks all the luster that the board game has. Just miserable to play and a terrible interface. Id like our money back on this one.

Awesome mystery game it makes your brain exercise mental investigator agility very chellenging.

The online multiplayer option does not work at all. When inviting players, it sends iCloud links that dont do anything. Too bad, since this appears to be a decent game otherwise.

Wont work on iPad Pro. Crashes immediately upon open8ng. Waste of money.

Please update for 2018 iPad Pro resolution and fix the multiplayer which is completely broken.

Its a waste of money we bought this game so we can play a board game we like online but we cant find an online game idk if its Bc no one plays it or if its a bug but if your buying this to play with real people dont buy it we want our money back.

When we attempt to play a 3-player game using 3 different devices, were unable to establish a stable connection. One person usually ends up in a separate game all on their own. We finally got into a game! We played a game against a cheating Mr. X who took a double move every turn.

Multiplayer broken .. What a shame.

The game, and the implementation, is fine. However, the best, BEST part of playing Scotland Yard is always the after-game, when you all burst out talking about how close you were back on move 20, where were you, oh our gosh we thought you had us, etc. We’re surprised that zero thought was put into this critical part of the experience. You can’t even look at the board after the game ends and they tell you Mr. X’s final position. It just exits out and is lost forever. Devs, if you are reading, we highly suggest you implement the ability to recap – you already have the turn counter at the bottom of the board. After a game ends, please let players tap on each turn marker and see where the pawns were at that point. It seems like that would be easy.

Maybe we’re missing something, but we cannot get any multiplayer modes to work across devices. Very disappointing.

We stumbled on this older game and gave it a try. Enjoyed the simple rapid play against the AI, and wanted to try against friends and family on separate devices. No can do. When you select Bluetooth (which should also have a Wi-Fi option), it says to first select the number of players and then press Connect. But there are no buttons to select the number of players. If we go ahead and just press Connect it spins looking for a device, but it never finds one – even though a Bluetooth iPad was just a couple feet away. OK… We then tried the Internet option. Selected the name of a Game Center friend to play 2 player game with. Their device was on and open in our house. Again it just spun and never connected. We suspect that since they used Game Center for the connection, they may not have kept up with the protocol for the new Game Center… Or maybe this method cannot even be used anymore. Too bad… Hope they fix it. Will give 5 stars if they can, because it would be fun to play with family and friends.

This game is really entertaining and has a high level of replayability.

No crashes on iPad, iOS 9. Good game, not easy as solitaire. Doesn’t eat battery, runs smoothly.

We love this game it reminds us our childhood years. We’re happy that we find it again. The only problem is that can’t find no one to play online. That’s sad. Please do something if it’s possible. That’s why we’re leaving 4 stars.

Great game, but there is a bug when Mr. X is played by the computer and you play as the detectives. Once Mr. X location is revealed and you move your detectives one position next to a possible Mr. X location, a sound effect is played if Mr. X is one position away from a detective. This effectively gives away Mr. X’s actual position since you will know if you don’t hear this sound effect Mr. X is not at that possible location even though you didn’t actually have to move a detective onto that space to confirm.

We updated our 5 star review. Now it’s 3 star, sadly. While the solo/AI game is beyond amazing, one of our fav board games on iOS the online mode is broken. It’s probably due to GC rework, but the only way to play with someone next to you is by sending the text message with a link (odd) and the link doens’t work. Can’t connect. Tried dozen times.

The game itself is fun, but without being able to connect to online players leaves it to be a mediocre single player game. Perhaps we’re the only person looking to play multiplayer for this game but if not something should be fixed. Without multiplayer waste of $5.

Do not buy! Multiplayer does not work.

After learning the game, it crashed. Don’t wast your money! Don’t buy this.

The game crashed after 5 minutes!

The AI is a bit weak. Better as Mr X. The subway lines being blue doesn’t stand out as well on the board. The board game they are red. The little blue line marker in the stations are easy to miss. Would be nice to do a game replay at the end showing how everyone moved. Could not get the local Bluetooth to work. Several crashes while attempting.

Nice UI update, quality game. We’re Esther really good, or the AI could use an IQ bump, but we’re not going to complain. But yeah, remove the dev console please!

This game supports text AND audio chat… Very nice!… Just like sitting at a table with family and friends. This renditition is true to the original board game. Very well done, except for this programming script that pops up after the update. Please fix. For a fantastic family COOPERATIVE board game by Ravensburger, check out WHOOWASIT; it’s one of the best board games we’ve ever played, and it’s fun and challenging for the whole family… Kids AND adults. Another great cooperative board game is GHOST STORIES.

A little confusing for those of us with the old board game where the bus was green and the underground was pink. Faithful representation though. Had fun playing with Bluetooth. Need to fix the dev script when holding down your finger on the map to scroll. Still worthwhile and good family fun. The AI needs to be made harder. Even on hard it’s not too difficult.

Solid reproduction of the game. Poor QA however. This latest version even has the development build tag on the main menu!

Easier to read. Crashed during tutorial.

The update looks good, but it crashes constantly. We love the game but please fix it!

Great game. Only problem is that it’s not the best responding to us touching the screen. Not bad enough to rate it anything lower than a 5 though.

Our favorite game as a kid on the iPhone is great and Ravens ether did a great job in bringing it to the iPhone. We see a lot of complaints about the tutorial but didn’t have any issues.

Great game! Close enough to the board game for the purist, with the edgy feel for the techie. Fun and challenging.

Tutorial fixed as of September 2014. Completely understandable. Great game! Def worth money!

Works well. Unlike other iPad versions of classic board games, there does not seem to be any glitches where the computer gangs up on the player or has the unfair advantage.

Love the board game and now the app. IOS version very easy to maneuver. Although playing on an iPhone or iPod is a little tricky cuz of screen size but overall great app.

We played the board game for the first time in 30 years on Christmas with our dad and son. So our son found it in the App Store and we have to say its as fun as the board game.

Just like the classic board game.

Just the way we remembered the game from growing up in Germany. We do not agree with the negative feedback regarding the tutorial. Love the animation and the quality of the graphics. Better than the original board game! Thank you Ravensburger – keep more games coming!

We played the game as a kid, so we didn’t need to try to read the tutorial. So far the game is excellent, and if you liked the board game, you will like the electronic version.

Great game just like the board game!

First of all, Scotland Yard is a fun game with lots of potential. It’s easy to learn so even children will have no problem picking it up. A wonderful family game. It has in-game voice chat that really needs work if you are playing others online. However, you can only hear 1 or 2 players and it is very sporadic. SUGGESTION: allow voice chat for the detectives but don’t allow Mr. X to hear. This gives detectives the chance to discuss strategies. SUGGESTION: It would be wonderful if there was a replay feature so everyone could see how close they were to nailing Mr. X! That would make for some great laughs. Until that happens, a work around we use is to take a screen shot and send it via Chat. Other than buggy in-game voice chat, the only other problem we’ve seen is having a player randomly disconnect. Frustrating but doesn’t happen that often. Highly recommend as the developer has a good rep for fixing bugs and adding features.

We can’t say anything about the keyboard or chat. We just use the game to play the AI. It’s a good, fun game. The only problem we have, & it’s very isolated, is sometimes the game doesn’t recognize when we tap on the board. In those circumstances, we have to restart the app.

This is a good interpretation of one of our favorite board games, but some of the text is near-unreadable. The black text against the dark background makes it almost impossible to read. Fix this, and you’ll get the fifth star.

Nice and polished. Loses a star cause Game Center play doesn’t work. Always says failed.

Update 2: we saw some recent comments about the tutorial being bad. Although at first it worked for us under the general section, we decided to see why people might be having issues. So we tried the detective tutorial and sure enough there was a problem. The letters were black but was no longer in a white window. We tried Mr X section and that too was bad. Then we went back to general tutorial and it was also bad. So it is glitchy because at first it worked but now you can’t read it. The AI was really bad our last game so we’re going back to 4 stars for these issues ——————- Update: we played a few more rounds. The AI actually seems to be decent now. We beat it as Mr. X however it was very tense. The AI players were literaly only one space away several times. The second time we actually got caught! We think we were assuming the AI was that bad and we were kiling it but suddenly we got caught! That alone is priceless. Yes, sometimes the AI moves are questionable when we have to reveal our spot but for the most part they move to capture us. Bumping our stars from 4 to 5 because the last few games have been tense which we never thought would ever happen! ————————————- As a kid playing this in the 80’s this ios app is basically a recreation of the exact gameplay of the boardgame. As reviews have mentioned the AI is something to be desired- we only played it once so far with our fellow AI players set to hard. All worked together and and we captured Mr. X by round 11 but one AI player was off in Neverland. Am we blown away by it? No. Is the same gameboard feel to it? No. Does it play how you would expect it to play on an ipad? Yes. Graphics are nice. After one game, like we said, we’re happy with the purchase of $.99. We wouldn’t probably have paid more but we would recommend it for the sale price. You can’t go wrong with Mr. X! Oh and people have complained about the tutorial. We played both on our iphone 4s and ipad 3 and the tutorials were flawless. No problems reading it. People said it’s black words on a blue background. We had black words on a white background for both.

Just got the game and I, too, had the unreadable text problem on iOS7 and fixed it by going to Settings->Accessibility and setting Increase Contrast to On (and then reboot the iPad). That now puts the dark text against a white box background, as it was originally designed. Now we need to figure out what’s the most effective way to play us against the AI and have a semblance of a challenging game.

This may be a fun board game, but the app is poorly implemented. We had to go online to read the rules because both the rules in-game and the tutorial were unreadable. They were missing some sort of backdrop, and the font was unreadable on the background. Furthermore, we finished just one game (won) and it gave us the "win 10 games" achievement. So, yeah, fun game, but poor app. Hope they fix the bugs soon.
