A Glimpse into Seedship

An AI ship full of frozen colonists must find the best planet to be the new home of the human race. A randomly-generated text-based strategy game.

Push your luck: do you settle here, on this not-quite-ideal planet, or keep searching and risk your ship being damaged in the journey? The planets you encounter are randomly generated, and as you travel you encounter random events, so each playthrough is different. See the stories of the colonies you found, and keep trying for a higher score.

What’s New in the Latest Update?

Find out what’s new in the latest version of Seedship updated on 11th May 2019:

v1.3.3:

  • Fixed several typos.
  • Alien Mining Drones no longer destroy 2 surface probes when the text says they destroy 1.
  • Planet-spanning civilisations now correctly reduce Construction phase deaths based on their tech level.
  • The dictator from the Dictator event will no longer vanish without a mention if you settle a planet with a planet-spanning civ, instead they will slightly damage initial human-alien relations.
  • When settling a planet with a planet-spanning civ, it will no longer say parts of the cultural database are missing when you have exactly 100%.

Get it you wont regret it . Very different very addictive . A full game can take only minutes .

We love it!!! PLEASE GIVE ME MORE. How is this awesome lil treasure free???? We shouldn’t admit this but…I’d gladly pay for it.

To summarize, it is a good concept, delivers well, and is quick and entertaining.

This was the first game we downloaded on our new iPhone 14 having played several other space games on pc we wanted to see if there was one on the ap store for our new phone but didnt want anything battery draining or that would overheat our phone so we saw this and thought Ill give it a try. Pretty cool game its definitely a strategy game even without all the flashy graphics youll enjoy the game it allows for a lot of imagination and gives you details to help form in your mind what it is thats going on. Not only does it allow you to make decisions it also gives you bonuses and incentives for having made those decisions but also there are consequences. Do you keep all the colonists alive safely nestled in their cryo sleep chambers or do you sacrifice them for the good of the ship? Do you sacrifice one scanners ability to make that life saving maneuver that may alter the course youre on and end in disaster or do you keep that scanner intact and push the seed ship to its unknown limits. You get alot of play room to decide on what it is youll prioritize. Reading will go a long way for you in this game. There are many uncertainties and different paths. Our stats were quite low and we were on our very last probe we had traveled for millennias and lost much of the ships cabilities to sustain any safe trajectory towards choosing a place to colonize luckily enough we managed to avoid having our colonists being sucked into a black hole at least twice, the victims of a same scenario at least once and likely killed by warring nations one planet while also escaping likely uncertain doom. We dont want to spoil it but its likely impossible to spoil with so many different outcomes possible. Definitely give it a shot.

It was a interesting fun but short campaign we liked it is was very calming and was actually pretty interesting.

While the games incredibly repetitive after awhile, its still fun to play while waiting for something.

Seriously enjoyable game. The stories that end up being told are just simple enough to leave room to imagine. Truly wonderful way to spend a bit of time.

This game is very well executed and very diverse. We played five different games and was able to get different endings every time. The game is challenging but far from impossible. Trying to reach 10000 score!

The storytelling part of the game is amazing and theres so many possibilities but make sure to not destroy the scanners.

We found this game yesterday, and have probably been playing it more than we should be. The decisions are difficult to make without being devastating, and the descriptions of both the AI and the colonies made create amazing images in our mind, and Im going to write a story based off at least one of them. This is an amazing game and we dont think we’ve stopped screaming about it all day.

There are 3 one star reviews, one that calls for voice-over, one that says there’s not consequences, and one that says it’s a disappointment, the last two are wrong, we downloaded this game looking for something small to fill time when we were bored and without internet, and we were not disappointed at all! And no consequences? That’s a straight up lie, they must’ve not played for very long if they’ve never had a negative game happen, we’ve had a few, either our colony gets enslaved or wiped out from natural causes entirely. It is pretty hard to die in space though, we’ve never had it happen. And as far as voice over goes, that kinda true, but we don’t know how hard that would be to implement…

Super easy to pick up and is a must have for sci-fi fans.

Great game, no ads, good replay value.

This text-based sci-fi game is simple, but one of the most enjoyable games we’ve ever played. Id pay money for a game like this. We only wish there was more!

This was honestly a stunning idea of a game and it was executed beautifully but the game could use some sprussing up a bit. There are no visuals and we think the addition of visual media was add greatly to the experience.

Or someone please expand… Exactly the kind of app we look for. Unique, fun, replayable. But too finite at present… Not meant as a negative cause this seems like a labor of love. Our only criticism otherwise… Way to heavy on planet wide oceans… Those should be exceedingly rare (credit to Carl Sagan). But its fun… Download and enjoy.

This well-designed game takes you on a journey of finding the best Earth-like planet, making trade-offs after each planets visit on what aspect of the ship gets damaged – the scanners?, scientific knowledge?, Landing gear? Letting passengers die? You also get an opportunity do upgrade your scanners every few hops, making it easier to find the best planet, but risking the lives of last remaining humans after each visit. Great game, and we want more games like this. We especially give the developer props for not monetizing and having no ads. This game is also playable on a browser.

We had so much fun playing this game! The best part of it is that it is all free. Another great thing is this game is based on skill and luck versus other Sci-Fi games which is on money. With its simple theme it makes it easy for any age! In addition, the scenarios are heart pounding and makes you think what you should do. We normally do say the S word but when our shop had hit the comet and destroyed the human pods we said it. With its simple yet addicting storyline, heart pounding decisions, and great scenarios we would highly recommend this game. However, our only problem is, is that there is no sound. If your like us just put spaceship ambience. But we would like sound effects.

This game is amazing! Every time we play the results are different, and the random events make this game challenging, but not to much. This game is like no other game we’ve ever played. If you want a good sci-fi RPG, download this right now! Dont listen to the one star reviews of this game, theyre just complaining. One of our favorite parts of this game is that you can look back at your results of each play through, and it ranks them from best to worst. If we were to have one complaint about this game, it would be that the civilizations can get corrupted to easily even if you only lose a small amount of your humans. But its fine. It doesnt really bother us all that much. So overall, amazing game! Download now!

We love the game, but all we want is a full screen option for iPhone 11! Also, our highest score was 11,000.

Hi! We spent the past two days playing this in our phone browser, then paid some money to download it on our computer, realized there was an App Store option, and decided to do that to switch back to the phone interface while still being able to save more of our runs. However, there is a weird glitch in the app where the box of our ship stats doesnt scroll along with the page, but it also doesnt stay fixed at the top of the window; when we need to scroll down to read about an event or see our final scores, the stats box jumps random up and down the page as we scroll. The game itself we love! But this glitch is annoying.

Seedship is a text-based game where you play as an AI, tasked with guiding humanity to a new planet to call home. You must scan each of the planets you come to and decide whether to start a colony or move on. This game has a fun blend of strategy and luck. Even if youve seen a scenario before, you cant predict how itll play out because every time is different. We like all of the elements and details that go into this game (planet descriptions, aliens relations, etc). Theres even some fun secret endings, like settling on a terraformed planet as an alien experiment, or living on a simulated planet made by superior AI. Even though the concept of the game is similar every play-through, you wont ever have the exact same journey twice. If youre bored and looking for something to play, Id recommend this game!

As an aficionado of storygame sims and a lover of the civ genesis genre, we give 5 big stars to Seedship. Its a simple short game, and undemanding, but with great realism and replayability. All text and imagination based, but its exciting to see what kind of civilization you can propagate based on your starfaring choices.

It has an intuitive teaching structure and makes us feel smarter every time we play!

We played this game before it was an app and Im delighted to see it on the iPhone. It has so much depth, a simple concept that gets deeper the more you look at it. Im definitely going to enjoy the chance to play it again.

We wish the developer update this game :(

Love the diversity of possible outcomes and the actual consequences to your choices. We’ve ended up everywhere from absolute failure to a hellhole that makes Westeros look nice to an cosmic enlightenment utopia. Why cant paid games be this good?

Thoughtful, compelling game where you must choose a planet for a small band of human colonists to settle on. Your sensors scan planet after planet, delivering readouts on temperature, atmosphere, gravity, and etc. For you to consider. There is a poignancy to this game–your settlers are the last survivors of our species; the writing is simple but beautiful; pop-up events force you to make moral as well as material decisions–and you will find yourself coming back to it again and again. You can run micro-playthrough after micro-playthrough, or you can pursue a particularly long session–be aware that the game becomes harder the longer you play, as the ship becomes increasingly damaged (but also increasingly accurate, scanner-wise). You will need to brave a long playthrough to find a true second Earth! Five stars. No microtransactions. No internet connection needed. Deceptively simple, but deep and affecting.

A complete run through of this games only takes a few minutes, but the endless combination of events makes this a game you will replay several times in each sitting, working towards a higher score. We have had the game 2 days, we have played through about 20 times, and Im pretty happy with a score in the high 12,000s. Really fun game!

This game is so well-done in all its aspects, we dont even know where to start. The premise is very interesting and captures your attention immediately. The random chance-based gameplay is fun and exciting, the random events are incredibly fun and interesting, and we’ve played this game so many times we’ve lost track and no two runs have been anything close to the same. Great replayabillity and one of the best parts is no ads! We have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the universe in the Seedship and we would recommend it to anyone reading the reviews before downloading. P.S., we recommend changing the color scheme from green to turquoise as it makes for a much more obvious color gradient scale.

This is a really fun game! The choices matter but not in a way that your decisions can be misunderstood, which we love. We like all the possibilities and its really hard not to settle on the first plant each time just to see what happens.

Ever since we picked this up, we knew it would be something special. Impeccable writing, good gameplay, and compounding consequences for your decisions makes this one of the best mobile text games if not THE best mobile text game we’ve played. Our only critique is lack of variance, as a lot of the events get very old and predictable. But its a very mild critique given how good it already is. Simple, well-made, and infinitely replayable.

Amazing game really. Challenges your thinking, makes you strategize every move, and the fact that it gives you a real detailed end result is fantastic. After playing a while, there are a couple predictable things, but not excessively redundant. We would love to see the developer update it and add some new options/planet types/circumstances, but really it is great as is.

Games great, if you add anything or fix bugs then thats great, honestly we just want more, make another game, expand it. Ill pay for a game thats like this but bigger. 10/10 nice work.

We think it was about a year or two ago we installed Seedship. We did not expect much and it was more of a random install than anything. Even when we were starting the game for the first time we thought am we really going to enjoy this? But then after about 10 minutes we began to saw how in-depth and interesting the gameplay was despite its simplicity. This is honestly one of the best free-to-play games on the App Store. A single game definitely will probably not last you 10 minutes, but there are plenty of different endings, scenarios, and outcomes you can strive to get. There is no correct choice in this game, everything you do will have a risk and the riskier it is, the higher the reward can be. You need to decide which part of the ship you want to prevent from being damaged as you travel across the galaxy, trying to find a new home for humanity. Will your faith in aliens be rewarded? Or will the Seedship and humanity suffer immensely? Do you let an asteroid hit the colonist sleep chambers? Or do you avoid it and allow it to hit somewhere else that may be more important? Do you settle for a planet that is not exactly perfect for mankind? Or do you risk humanity losing more of itself by trying to find a better planet?

But we really wish the voice over worked properly so our partner (nonsighted) could play too.

This is a great game. If there is anything they could add to this game it would be constructing the ship. It truly be amazing if you could but Im happy how the game is so far.

Seedship is a game we have known it for a few years now and each play through is different from the last, good for quick plays and or playing for a few hours. We found myself enjoying this more than we had imagined from the morality of saving colonists to which upgrade we think would be most beneficial. Very straightforward and taking risks on literally every choice you make is the best part in our opinion. Recommend Seedship highly but if you dont like reading a lot this may not be your cup of tea and all that said we dont imagine myself putting the game down for a while we find myself coming back for the aspects of RNG, morality, risk taking and plenty more. 10/10 chefs kiss.

We love it. Cant wait for you to update it a bit for even more depth. Dev John: Contact us for riffing and free story and UX ideas!

Can you add like when you go on the planet and thief is intelligent life can you tell us what else happens.

Seedship is an absolutely wonderful game, but between its complex moral decisions, risks and rewards, and deceptively simple gameplay, our favorite thing has to be how the game connects you to the story. In the context of the game, you are an AI created to find a second home for humanity, and to think like a human. At first this seemed like a cute way of putting the player into the game, but the more we played the more we realized it was true. To an AI, and to us as a player, the colonists were just numbers on a screen. We wanted them to survive and thrive, yes, but in the end our mission was to win the game. We made some decisions based on human biases, but they werent clouded by fear or panic or loneliness like they would if they were made by an actual member of the crew. We commanded a faceless army of sleeping colonists, and whether or not they succeeded was our priority, yes, but it didnt make us cry myself to sleep because Id killed hundreds of colonists. The game truly does make you feel like the AI in charge, and thats just one of the beautiful things about the story. We highly recommend this game, which can deliver a beautiful, heartfelt sci-fi narrative in just a few minutes with a few paragraphs of text.

This is a fantastic little game where you lead a ship of the last humans on a voyage to a new home. You slowly upgrade your ship as you pass by potential planets, but risk damage each time you do. A nice mix of random events and balanced gameplay leads to a fair experience that you can master in a couple hours. It’s a game where even failing is fun as you get to see what tragic event befell your last hope. We got everything from savages on a planet wide ocean to a utopia on paradise, and enjoyed every moment of it. It’s free, it’s fun, check it out.

This is a fun little text game that can easily kill 10-15 minutes at a time. Highly recommend.

It’s such a simple concept, but complex in what you can do with it, and the stories you can make up to go along with it. We always play as a classic over-zealous AI, one whose primarily goal, to preserve the lives of its passengers at all costs, forces it to disregard the idea of landing at all costs, instead opting to keep searching indefinitely at the expense of every other system besides life support, because it thinks that’s the only way to ensure their safety. (It’s also just pretty fun to get all the systems as damaged as possible without failing. Our record is all scanners gone except gravity at 7%, only 3% on the landing system, 353 passengers remaining, both databases completely depleted, and no remaining surface probes.) I’d really love some new random events, and we think the idea of some rare random event actually changing the AI’s goal from finding a suitable host planet, to instead just letting the remaining humans live out their lives on board would be cool. We think it should be a diffucult ending to get however, with the need to somehow bring back some resources from planets you pass by, and then to completely deplete the landing system.

Seedship is such a good game, addicting but still simple and makes you think. Each time you venture out into the dark, you remember that it could cost you, and so you learn to keep what opportunities you find. Also the rare events are cool.

This game is a great time passer and is full of little ethics riddles. We especially enjoyed drawing the description the game gave; it appreciated that it is image-less and allows ones mind to run wild. -Job well done.

Nice game, reminds us a lot of AI dungeon and requires some skill to play. Very relaxing atmosphere tho.

This is a great game with a surprising amount of replay value. We’ve had it for a while now and we’re still coming across new scenarios. We love that you can’t predict how a scenario will play out, even if you’ve come across it before. And watching the colony play it is immensely satisfying, and even failing is interesting. But we love this game and think everyone should give it a try. One comment: unless we just haven’t come across the other outcomes, it seems like war with the natives always ends in enslavement. It would be nice if we could get a different outcome for this. Maybe the two populations might just part ways, or maybe one wipes the other out, or even ending in an uneasy truce.

Its great to see a tiny game like this offer so much thought, complexity and nuance. Trying to do ones best to navigate terrible danger in the hope of a better world for ones children feels cathartic these days.
