What Makes The Castles of Burgundy Stand Out

The Loire Valley during the 15th Century. As influential princes, the players devote their efforts to careful trading and building in order to lead their estates to prominence. Two dice set out the action options, but the players always make the final choices. Whether trading or livestock farming, city building or scientific research, many different paths lead to the prosperity and prominence of the players! The many ways to gain victory points in this building game require careful thought round after round along with extensive planning ahead. Thanks to the different estates, the game remains challenging for the players for a long time, as no two games play out alike. The winner is the player with the most victory points at the end of the game.

Player Experience Highlights

Community Insight:

We got this app so we could learn how to play. We just use it for solo play against the bot to practice so we're not sure how good online play is. We like that our solo games save and we can go back to them if we get busy. The game used to crash on us but we're not sure if our phone had an update and now it doesn't crash anymore so we're happy about that.

We bought this, because we own Feldmans other analog board game, Carpe Diem (Ravensburger). That game isnt as well known and probably will never become an app, even though it is awesome. Castles of Bergundy shares similar mechanics, and is considered one of the best board games ever made on BGG. We had never played that board game but wanted to play a game like Carpe Diem on the go. This gives us our fix! Our only complaint is the weird, PowerPoint swoosh that occurs between each players turn. We dont know why, but it looks corny to us and kind of ruins the vibe of the game. Board games dont have magic portals. Perhaps a fade out and in would work better. But overall, we love this game. Difficult to do well in. We appreciate that. High recommend.

Love this game implementation! However, it seems a little suspicious though, when it rolls the same unwanted numbers over 4 or 5 times in a row, all that perfectly scout out the hexagon numbers around us that we dont need. We get that same Spotify randomization feeling when it plays the same 10 songs over and over out of a 2000 song playlist. Yeah, maybe you should work on a true randomized dice throw. Playing hard opponents doesnt mean you give them the rolls they need and the main player what they dont need. It needs to be truly random.

Love the game, but almost every time we play, we have to restore our purchases for the new map packs. That gets a little irritating after a while. Its especially irritating if youre not currently near wi-fi.

We regret buying this game. The tutorial froze multiple times at the exact same spot, so we couldnt finish it. So we read the rules and watched videos. The game is complicated, but we figured it out enough to play a few times against AI. There were times we should have been able to place a certain tile, but it wouldnt let us, even though we knew we should be able to. But because there is zero feedback or pop-ups telling you why you can or cant do something, youre stuck with a bad tile you cant place, with no reason why. We really wanted to like this game, and the actual physical game is surely fine. But at $8.99 we expected a better user experience. We cant recommend it, especially to a new player.

This is, overall, a good adaptation of the Board game. Generally speaking, the AI is a solid opponent. But there are some improvements would be greatly help the game: 1. The board game has been updated with expansions / extra tiles. Seeing those extra tiles added to the app (even as an IAP) would be great. 2. Ive experienced an odd bug when playing a castle tile. It has to do with playing a tile, wanting to buy a tile for 2 silver and then taking the 2nd action. For some reason, you have to buy the other tile before placing the castle and taking the second action. (Perhaps this is following the rule book, but perhaps its a bug?) 3. The expansions also have a lot of different player boards. Only having the original 8 gets old. Adding new boards would be a HUGE improvement to the app. 4. Similar to #3, having more choice over which board to play. Going random israndom. Being able to choose from a couple of different boards would be a nice touch. Overall, its one of our most played board game apps. If youre on the fence, you should get it. But it hasnt been updated in quite a while and it could use some TLC to update it with the current releases of the tabletop game (expansions, player boards, etc.).

If you already know the game, the learning curve to the app will be pretty easy. The scoring is a little different than the board game – yellow tiles are scored throughout the whole game, for example.

We love the game, but are getting bored without the expansions. Happy to pay for them, but we're basically done playing until they come.

When it runs, this is a good implementation of the game. However, it crashes way too often, and when we open the app again the game is completely gone.

We went through the in game tutorial twice and still didnt understand gameplay or the really weird online game interface. Ended up watching a how to play YouTube video and reading the board game rules end to end to finally understand how to play. We had to exit our first two games because the app seemed to not let us proceed. Couldnt undo, couldnt pick an action, couldnt confirm our turn. On relaunch, was able to continue our game from previous move. Have had two successful local games against the AI. Now that we understand how to play, it works pretty well. End game scoring is still unclear to us as the game doesnt bother describing that screen at all, none of the elements are tappable, and there is no onscreen information on what is basing counted / compared.

Guest changes to same picture as the logged in player, borders at start are all the same color, player name doesnt show when using random identical board – if you dont see the color in the brief time it is on the screen, you have to exit to the load screen to see who is who. Should be able to enter another players name too.

This is a great game, we dont want to diminish that. However in a two human player (2 human + 1 AI) game the animations waste 15 minutes of total time for a single game! Thats being generous as we are undercounting and rounding to the nearest 5 minutes. Thats with the game speed set to the highest and also on an iPhone 13 pro and iPhone 14 pro max (not old or slow devices). From the first player to the last player is more than 10 seconds waiting for the animations and watching the replay. From the last player back to the first player is well over 30 seconds of animations of switching maps, showing die rolls, and watching replays. Sadly, 40 seconds of watching animations multiplied by the 25 turns there are in the game really add up! Amazing game but with human players it just takes too long. We havent encountered any defects or any glitches that caused us to lose any games either. The problem is its not much faster than playing the physical board game. All we are asking for is a way to disable animations and replays. If we really need to know what the other players did we can just look at their board.

We got this despite several negative reviews, because we really wanted to learn this game by playing the AIs. Unfortunately it froze repeatedly in the same spot in the game.

The title of this review says it all. Simply put its horrible. Pretty but useless graphics, limited to no reference and guidance on how things work together. If this is your first experience with the game it will make you hate it immediately. Buy the real board game instead. A poor port that should be removed from the store.

Edit: bug persists throughout several of the past few updates. Why is this bug so hard to fix? We estimate that Ive lost 30-40 games because of this bug, and our ranking has suffered greatly through no fault of our own. We currently have a game live that has been sitting in our games list for several months as neither our opponent nor we have taken action on it. Developers please fix the bug that causes the game to get hung after one of our opponents is timed out and forced forfeit by our other opponent. At this point its our turn but going into the game, it never progresses to our turn, stays on waiting for opponent. This results in our turn also timing out and our opponent also forcing us to forfeit. Very frustrating in ranked games, had this happen 4-5 times in the past couple months, submitted several bug reports from the game, but its still not fixed, nor have we gotten any response.

The game constantly crashes on our iPad. We wish we could get a refund.

Unplayable on iPad Air 1 (crashes at opening splash screen). Admittedly, this is an older device, but App Store indicates that it is compatible. Buyer beware.

We loved this app for a long time. After this most recent update it crashes constantly. We cant even play a local game without it crashing.

We put off buying this game due to the bad reviews, but we finally took the plunge because the game itself is great. 10 games or so in, no bugs, no crashes, decent-ish AI. Im thinking the dev team has fixed any previous issues and likely having a newer iPad with a lot of memory helps too. The graphics look sharp and the interface is intuitive after a few plays (there are a lot of actions you can take.) we havent played online yet, so we cant speak to that.

This game is so enjoyable. We have not had any problems with it. This is such a good digital version of a popular board game. There are so many options each turn. We enjoy trying a different strategy each time we play.

One of the best boardgames of all time has received a competent and well-implemented adaptation that works! Any connection hiccups are forgiven due to the game's simple, yet thought-provoking design. Newbies will take a minute to learn the myriad tiles, but will catch on fully by the end of game one. If you like modern boardgames, give this a shot.

Ive played this game around 20 times locally vs the ai. The ai is good and the game is quite well implemented. It has frozen up only a few times but we simply back out of the game and reload it from the currently being played games menu and it has resumed flawlessly each time. Well well worth the money to play a fantastic board game that sadly sees too little table time. Thank you devs.

Nice digital port of the board game. Took a bit to get our mindset into the new look and layout but after adjusting it plays well. Really great game Im excited to be able to play more often.

Castles of Burgundy is an all-time great boardgame, and this adaptation does it justice. Great asynchronous play – Im currently playing games with folks from all over the place and its really smooth. If youre used to the boardgame layout, it may take you a game or two to get your bearings, but once you do youll appreciate how the developers laid things out to work surprisingly well on a phone-sized screen. Do yourself a favor though and change the animation speed to fast, and turn-off replay in the games list if you want to play your turn as quickly as possible. P.S. It had some bad bugs when it first came out, but most of them are fixed now – you can buy with confidence.

It is so much fun to play that it doesnt really matter whether we win or lose. One tip: If the game freezes, as it still sometimes does, access the menu via the button in the right top corner and select ypur current game in the lists of active games. The game will reload and open right before your last turn during which it froze. Update March 13: All of a sudden, we cant play anymore. Network error, client needs to be updated for online game – but we only play against the AI. Our network is fine. Play runs until after we placed the first card. Then the error message pops up. We checked for an update, there actually was one, but after the update still the same.

Developer, please fix the yellow knowledge tile (we believe its #7?) that scores each time an animal tile is scored. Friends and we have noticed that it gives a mystery extra point each time it is activated, on TOP of the points it already gives. For example, if we add a 2 cow tile to a pasture with two other 2-cow tiles, it will correctly add the cows (6), correctly give 3 knowledge points for the 3 tiles scoring, and then incorrectly add a mystery point for a total of 10 when it should be 9. This app is great overall, though! Have played it with friends now dozens of times.

We play this game regularly (both game board and app). It is one of our favorite games. Wish the developer would update the games app though. It use to give you notifications when it was your turn, now it no longer does that. Not for that this wold be a five star game.

We can never finish the game because its always timed out we only get to make one or two or three moves a day and all the games are timing out a before we get a chance to finish one please provide more time to play the game requires many moves if a player makes one move a day how many moves does it take to finish the game its 50 moves do the math A similar product terra mystica on the same multiplayer platform doesnt time out otherwise the game plays like a dream Excellent.

Its a great game that is meant to be played real time. Turn based waiting up to a day for a turn is problematic. Hard to remember where you left off and it takes away from the fun of the game! Create a live option please! The game appears there is one but it does not work and grayed out.

A straightforward adaption of the board game. We like that we dont have to pick up a bunch of tiny cardboard tiles anymore and it is now digitized. However, online play is frustrating. Its a bit clunky and glitchy at times. The game makes us time out well before our 24 hour turn is over sometimes (we dont understand why/when at all). The AI isnt good enough to challenge us, so we really rely on good pvp interaction for these games. There are virtually no instant games because there arent enough people playing at any given time. Only 24-hour turn length games.

Please add 1) a way to nudge people to make their move and 2) a way to turn off the time limits for games with friends. A very well designed game otherwise.

Love this game in general but when we try to do random boards the game crashes and closes out. We would like to be able to play with more options.

The gameplay is great and really fun. But it crashes at least twice per game and a few of the features just dont work (cant log in to GameCenter, etc.) Feels like a fancied up version of a beta-test. Disappointed that they released something this buggy for full-price, but Im still enjoying the gameplay when it works! Looking forward to an update soon! (Cough, cough, nudge, nudge.).

Locked up in 4th phase of 3 player game. After locking up there was a new 4th player who sat there inactive. Frustrating to play for that long with no conclusion. The tutorial needs a hint button or a lesson on strategies, good combos, etc. There are so many paths to victory that is not clear when it is better to choose one tile over another.

The online games tend to freeze up, tells you its your turn when its not, and still crashes while changing between games. Looking at the other players board is absurdly and unnecessarily slow. Worst of all:The code controlling the dice is broken. You not only get doubles far more than you would by probability, but you will get the very same number showing up again and again turn after turn. This is beyond randomness or pure luck. Theres something noticeable wrong with the algorithm. All of this mars what is otherwise a truly masterful modern board game. UPDATE THE APP TO INCLUDE THE NEW EXPANSIONS TILES.

Multiplayer games are slow to load on new iPhone 11. Would like option to skip replays and see a history log of past actions.

This is an incredible port of the game, but in both single and multiplayer there are SO many crashes, even after full restarts. We cant play against AI now, as the app crashes before it can save our first turn, and we have multiplayer games going in which our opponent simply cant take their turn.

We really enjoyed playing this, until it started crashing ALL THE TIME. We cant even get through one game anymore. Its awful. For the amount you have to pay for the app, we expected better.

Date: May 31, 2019 Devices: iPhone 7plus, iPad Air 2 Wow. We honestly can't believe we're saying this, but CoB just wasn't ready to be released. DIGIDICED has done some outstanding work with other board game apps, but CoB is riddled with various bugs. It's a shame, as it's one of our favorite games, and has rightfully earned its place in the top 20 Board Games of all time. Some Bugs we've discovered: (1) When playing a 3 player game against medium difficulty AI, we don't always know what color we are when starting. The text box is way off centered, so that all we can see is the check mark to "accept" our starting placement. Hmmmm… (2) From time to time, the game completely freezes when placing a dark green "castle" tile when attempting to take the bonus action. We think this has mostly happened on the board which has 2 castles at the bottom of the map and 2 at the top (with 7 building tiles in the middle). — we place a dark green castle tile, and try to take a ours tile for our bonus action…locks up. Hmmmmm, let's try again, we'll take an animal tile instead…locks up. So we just forget about it. Lo and behold, the AI finishes it's Castle Tiles and Farm Areas first, getting the first place bonus which we would've had. Grrrr… (3) we don't have any specific examples, but we think some of the knowledge tiles don't always score correctly. In a game known as being a "point salad", every point matters. All in all, we were happy to pay the asking price for the app. We'd also be happy to pay more for additional boards and/or expansion tiles. And despite our rating, we'd recommend the app for people new to the game or those looking for a quick CoB fix. But in its current state, we're pretty disappointed beta-testing didn't discover some of the bugs that completely lock up the game, and we remain hopeful the bugs will be worked out in future updates.

We bought another hobby boardgame app against our better judgement. The interface is unnecessarily weird. Why the moving parts? There should be an option to eliminate all animated waiting times that drain battery and distract. We have to click on the worker tab to see workers, why? Ed. We see now that theres a number signifying workers rather randomly placed. Why did the designers put this game on a weird steampunk gear thing ? Why cant we fast forward through AI turns and animations? We dont want to make another game account with another publisher or game company. This is an almost universally panned practice among board gamers. The simple implementation of this game on yucata.de and the other ones are better for people that enjoy this game, even though we would like to support Feld financially, $9 is a lot of money for something that probably wont work in 2 years. And a graphical bug that displays yellow tech on our board as under construction so we dont know what we built without clicking on it. Not acceptable. Oh not a bug, thats how it looks. Oof. Hard AI: A good human player routinely breaks 200 point scores, its the benchmark for winning in 3p+ games usually. Hard AI couldnt do this when we played. This is a complex game and wouldnt expect great AI for an app, but something to consider before buying. Edit: we made mistakes in our view of the UI. The game info is all there, just not conveyed clearly or logically. This is a problem with board games not being designed by people that play them.

Crashes every time you start a game.

Couldn't get a single game to play more than two turns. Refund requested. Bummer.

Fun when it actually works. Seems like every time Im winning against the AI it suddenly freezes. We paid $10 for this game. Make it WORK! Every time Im winning we swear it suddenly freezes. Not to mention the rolls for the AI are always in their favor. ALWAYS. We play the actual board game at least once a week and theres no WAY that the chances the AI have on their roles come up. Im at a point that we want our money back. Ridiculous.

Developer, please remove the timer for multiplayer games! 24 hours for an async game with 50 turns is not nearly enough so multiplayer is pretty much useless. To make it an easy fix, change it to 168 hours (a week), remove it, or let the user enter the game length. Ill update our review when this is fixed.

Id love to play this. But it tells us to click a red seal. Ive watched videos and see a red seal pop up in their game, but nothing happens on our game. What a waste of money.

  • Great strategy game based off of board game + Added character art looks good as does the map + great potential Huge, game breaking bugs. – we close our iPad lid and the game Ive been playing for the last 30 minutes is gone. – we purchased the second ours tile in the game at some point we undo. That tile is no longer in the game. AI doesnt have it, we dont have it. Game breaker. – Ive watched as the AI take two turns in a row twice now. Took a boat, placed boat, rerolled and then went again! Come on! Ive never seen bugs this bad. – the menu ui/ux is terrible. We found that you can speed up gameplay after hours of play. How do we change our player color? They should start over by copying the ui of an app that works or hire a ux designer so everything is intuitive. – Where does the steam punk iris diaphragm come in? This is a run away design team, where is the art director or project manager here? The 3D buildings were a cool idea but the rest of the ui is so weird and with lots of wasted space. – after a knowledge tile is built it looks weird. What is that supposed to be exactly and why not just keep the art so we can reference it there? In an effort to declutter you added an additional space for each knowledge tile.

We absolutely LOVE this game but we have a few major complaints. This is the absolute MOST we have ever paid for an online app game and Im super dissatisfied. One is they only have a total of 3 different maps to choose from and you only can actually choose from 2 in which one is the starter one..,. Which we can see getting boring . Plus the app locks up ALLLLL the time in the mid to mid end of the game and the only way is to close out the app and then you lose the game . Its SOOOO frustrating and we feel like we just wasted 8.99. The bummer is – we want to buy more games from this developer .. Ie bonanza and we just cant bring ourselves to give them more money.

Buggy. Im not even able to play this game. The game crashes every time we go to start a new one. Ive reinstalled it and still, same issue.

Great implementation of this game! Runs smooth on our iPad Pro 12.9" (2nd gen). Wouldn't run on an iPad 4. Also runs on iPad Air 2 fine as well. Make sure you have a high-end iPad and enjoy this sweet game! Devs, please make the "grunts/speech" a toggle item so we can disable. The advisors or whatever they are that pop up at the bottom right are OK, animation-wise, but the sound they make start grating pretty quickly.

Cool interface, smooth gameplay and animations. 4 full games on the original iPad Pro, no issues. Love the strategy in this. There are so many options and routes to take. Must read the rulebook to learn how to play, but so worth it. Addictive.
