User Reviews on Dark Realm: Guardian of Flames

Looking for more information? Read a comprehensive review of Dark Realm: Guardian of Flames below:

This game is very cool, we only wish there were some newer games like this one. We’ve been playing the HOP games for years and Im wondering why there arent many new ones. We find the music, the graphics, and the story line are great. Love the genre of this game. Please make more like this!!!

We love the entire Dark Realm series because the developers have really made an effort to create an immersive world. We appreciate their creativity and attention to small details, such as characters breaking the 4th wall and manipulating parts of our screen or the game controls; we also love it when we attempt to use an object in a scene and can watch our attempt play out and fail (instead of nothing happening at all). These details are above and beyond what we’ve seen in other hidden-object games and show the thoughtfulness of the developers. Whats more, we feel invested in the characters due to the continuity throughout the series (and great voice actors). Yes, we occasionally skip puzzles, but theyre supposed to be challengingthats the pointand Im grateful for custom settings so we can choose to skip or not as we like. If you want an experience thats more than the usual click-click-clicking, we highly recommend the Dark Realm series.

I, too, had the glitch in the opening terrace scene, where the screen does not move over when it is supposed to. We deleted game, closed all apps, restarted, same problem. Waited a few days, unstalled game, then turned off iPad, back on, then closed all open apps, then off and back on and it worked. This time we also did not immediately unlock the game, so maybe that was it instead. Frustrating, to say the least. The game is quite long, hops are varied, puzzles are easy to medium. We really liked the end puzzle card game. However, we felt there are too many characters, and therefore the characters are not fleshed out. We wouldve liked more interactions with a smaller cast. Which is sad, the glimpses you got of these characters were intriguing, maybe save some for a sequel or another game. Morphing objects in all hops, puzzle pieces in each scene, both of which you can go back after the game and get any you missed. Took off 1.5 stars for the glitch, then added back .5 stars for the length.

It was written with small girls in mind. The artwork is great and the puzzles and hops are challenging.

Game is good but it needs more Skips! Takes too long to listen to all the dialogues and long winded action scenes Text is microscopic. Much too small.

We really liked this game, but nearly to the end in the last chapter the inventory is unavailable, so we cannot get to the kite/rope to fly it up to the second stone head. Im on an iPad Pro latest version of iOS playing at the second level of expertise. This needs to be either fixed, or a cue of what needs to be done to get the inventory to show up.

We were enjoying this game a great deal, but when we got to the next to the last chapter, our tools were not available to saddle the flying beast. We tried restarting the app and then our iPad, but the tools were there in the previous scene but disappeared when we entered the arboretum. If we delete the app and reinstall, we will have to start all over because it does not back up the data on our iPad. Fix the glitch so we can finish the game and we will gladly give the app 5 stars.

We just downloaded this game and started playing it before buying it. Im grateful we did this because right now Im experiencing the same bug or glitch in the beginning of the game that others mentioned. We cant move to the other side of the deck in the first scene. Please fix this issue Big fish. Im a big fan of your games and this is a big let down.

We had the same problem as others, though Im playing on iPhone XS. We couldnt get to the other side of the terrace. Tried closing apps and turning our phone off and back on, with no luck. Deleting this game. If you choose to try it, dont pay before you see if you get stuck too.

Two years ago people complained this game had a game-breaking glitch in the first scene, and it still has the SAME exact glitch. We’re not even sure why Big Fish is a going concern any more. Do. Not. Bother.

Sadly we cant get past the terrace scene. The screen wont go over to the table so we can place the gears. Super disappointed because we uncharacteristicly bought the game before trying it based on the the rating and the fact it was on sale. We think we would have enjoyed it, but we got a whopping 10 minutes of game play. We tried closing all 3 apps we had open, and rebooted our iPad but still having the same problem. Perhaps we will try it again if the put out another update that actually fixes the problem they claim to have already fixed.

I,too,am unable to complete the first level as the screen does not move to where we need to go. We have deleted this game FOUR times and it still won’t work. You said in your updates that this glitch was resolved… Please fix it. We would like to buy it but not until its fixed!

Im at the point in the well where we need to use the bucket to get water but when we go down there, our item bar disappears is this a glitch?

Have to say that our initial experience with the game was awful. We have an iPhone 6 and right off the bat we were stuck on the initial terrace scene and soon found out in the forum that others were not having a good time either on the terrace. However, thanks to Big Fishs help site, our prob was that we had too many apps running. We hate to read so all this researching made our head hurt but it was a good thing. This is an FYI to all you gamers out there. If you are having probs with the game, clear out your open apps and reboot your phone. Happy time. So… We find this game to be one of the best entries in Big Fishs lineup. Im old by the way, 68, and find the puzzles to be far from mind numbing (so far anyway) which is a nice change of pace. For us anyway. The various HOPs are original, unique and clever compared to most of the others HOP games we’ve played. Theyre downright interesting. And as always with BF games, the visuals and artwork are stellar. One thing we do want to negatively comment on (and this is directed at the game creators/designers/etc) is that most of the BF games we be played lately have a female protagonist. Im a male and having some testosterone running the show would be a nice change of pace. Or maybe even a non specified gender. Anyhoo… As we continue playing, we hope we dont regret saying what a great game this is. Having fun.

Loved this game. We’ve played a lot of BFG apps, and this was one of the best games we’ve played so far. The graphics were excellent, and the gameplay was extremely varied. The games were a little bit easy, but its nice to not have to struggle constantly. Just an enjoyable game to relax after a long day! We would highly recommend it!

Mad Head releases a game and we buy it, so we’re biased. We’ve never been disappointed in one of their games and once we saw it was a release of one of our favorite series from them; we wasn’t going to miss it. We loved it and could not put it down. So that’s one negative bc it seemed to go by quickly. Custom settings, collectables, HO morphs, awesome graphics and engaging storyline. We couldn’t ask for more other than more from Nathaniel and Valera. We’re dying for another Nevertales Legends or Beyond!! Please more Mad Head!

Great game – totally characteristic of Mad Head Games Good character voices overs, somewhat interactive hidden object scenes. Found some puzzles difficult and very unique. Teleporting map is provided. Collectibles and morphing objects to find. One must really pay close attention to this storyline and tasks at hand. Always up for a Good Challenge and this one is definitely challenging. One thing that we felt the developer could have elaborated on was the instructions and aspects of this game. Other than that, a definite Buy! Love this developer and their originality. One must take their time to fully engage in this storyline. Experienced no glitches and gameplay was smooth. Graphics were crystal clear and beautiful, not to mention the special effects, that could be wild at times. Play & Enjoy – Buy this game! KdBoots.

Slow going as it takes quite awhile to figure out what to do. Find that challenging and frustrating at times. Will buy the game. Intrigued to see what we can figure out and what we have to give up on. Wish us luck.

Update on 3/9/18: Lynx Minx, thank you for pointing out the correct location of the map. It was a slight slippage of our mind. Our review is adjusted accordingly below: In our opinion, this is a disappointing game from one of our favorite developers. It’s sorely missing the elements of novelty that always made us stop and say, "Wow!" The exposition of the plot, although rehashed, is conveyed in an exceptional manner that maintains our attention as we advance. Along the way, you meet some whimsical characters who benefit your journey, such as Galan, the sly fox with a sassy attitude. The dreamlike artwork captures the quirky essence of this developer’s imagination; namely, the floating objects. The cut-scenes are remarkably clear an indication of high-quality production. You can customize your settings. The inventory is labeled and interactive; items require assembly. In custom mode, the teleport map facilitates brisk travel to labeled locations and indicates available actions. Transition between scenes is smooth and quick. The now-not-so-innovative techniques that set this developer apart from their peers are still present, such as the side-by-side panels of action sequences, which often materialize. The adventure portion of the game can be challenging at times to figure out what to do next. The varied HOSs are creatively executed; no surprise here. Our favorite scene is the one in which you find items by pulling out the three drawers, with each drawer displaying a distinct scene; then you place the items back into the proper scene. We did not detect, though, the introduction of any pioneering constituents; we’ve seen it all before. In our opinion, the puzzles are full of some ups and downs. We found a few to be too cumbersome to solve, meaning that we had to depend upon trial and error to achieve the solution, rather than apply logic-and-reasoning skills. For example, we’re referring to the one in which all of the holes need to be filled with gems at the point where the two sliding squares meet together. You have to switch around tiles that contain round gems; then, you press the Hand button and pray that all the holes are filled. It might not sound too hard; however, you are only given an iota of a second to observe the pattern while the two squares are combined, thus resulting in the repetition of combining the tiles a dozen consecutive times to see which holes are empty. We never skip puzzles but that one we did! Lovers of collectibles, beware! You solely collect a singular set, which blends in very well into the background. Even the best developers within this genre cannot escape at least one hiccup. This game is not technically sound. One nuisance in particular is that the text that appears at the top of the screen, relating to acquired reading information, disappears too fast. We had to repeatedly tap the reading materials to bring them back into focus. In addition, the archaic practice of laboriously dragging over multiples of the same inventory item to effectuate a task is unnecessary and unnerving. Furthermore, we still cannot comprehend why this developer forces players to access the main components such as the objectives from under the Menu. This tedium is a disruption to our concentration and fluidity of progression. Considering the toll that these grouses are taking on our patience, we deducted two stars. Therefore, our final rating is 3 stars.

We are a fan of this series. But this one did not hold up to the last two. The action was less, Sound problems popped up intermittently, and we were just generally disappointed that she ended up as a dragon. The hint of romance was lacking also. We hope the next one if they make one is better.

Fun fact, and important info: Did any of you know that a battery CANNOT be replaced in an iPad? (Only in an iPhone) Well, it cant but for $99 plus tax they will replace your tablet. If they dont have one exactly like yours, it has to be ordered but we were told we could hold onto this one if they have to order it and do not have it in stock. So NEVER let Apple support tell you that you need to spend hundreds of dollars and you must buy a new one! So we are waiting to bring it in on Monday (they make an appointment for you) and can rate this game in a timely manner. At first we were excited to play this game, because it fell under the fantasy genre as well as being developed by Mad Head. Mad Head to us is NOT automatically synonymous with 5 stars! There were a lot of perks, but this game was not enjoyable to play. Firstly, you could customize settings. However we opted for a tutorial and didnt get one. There was a journal of sorts (inconveniently under the Menu) and objectives were regularly updated. The graphics and cut-scenes were magical, colorful and fabulous. At last we were given an in-game teleport map to transport us briskly between locations. At each location you must collect a cleverly hidden puzzle piece. There was not a plethora of tasks at each location, as with Elephant. However you received some neat gadgets to utilize; we wont go into detail or spoil the game for anyone. Inventory was labeled and interactive and there were complex items to assemble. The HO scenes were interesting and had some variation, and morphing objects as well. There wasnt a great deal of variation in the puzzles/games. We enjoyed the labyrinth puzzles, but there were several games we had to skip because they were impossible to manipulate and after a while we were frustrated and annoyed. The quality assurance was sorely lacking in this glitchy game, and touch screen sensitivity issues and inability to manipulate mini-games will reduce ratings. This game wasnt that long even along with the bonus adventure. Our rating will stand at 3 stars, for average at best. Quality assurance issues should have been addressed before this game was released! Oddly enough, we checked and realized that we dont particularly like this series in any event, but we did rate this game very fairly. Happy gaming to all! Next up is EIPIX, and the way they have been churning out games leaves us wondering how decent the quality assurance will be in the new game. At least we will know because others will play before us. Note to KimTwilight: The map tab was in the game but everything else was under the Menu. The map tab looked like a world button! At least after reading your review we knew we wasnt losing our mind, or just in a bad mood because we have to replace this tablet. Your review gave us justification, so thank you so much for your integrity! We wasnt imagining the glitches. How do others rate a problematic game 5 stars; do they not experience issues or does it not bother them? Does it depend on what type of tablet they are using? We would really like to know!

The game crashed during the bonus game, and reset itself. Very disappointing.

Impossible to control the mini games. Lou.

Why have options if they cant be controlled? We want NO noise, but yet a squawking bird and white noise is all you hear and can not be silenced. Last week ppl were saying graphics were not crisp, but yet they accept hazy graphics in this game. Oh, but its a Mad Head Game, we overlook all their shortcomings. Its not worth 1 star in our opinion.

Couldnt scroll left and right, hint button not working properly either (on iphone 6). Maybe this game works OK on ipad though?

Luckily we didn’t buy! Froze on the first scene. Reinstalled- same problem. A really poorly done game.

Like others we cannot get to the place we need to use the gears per walkthrough. The scene just wont move. We read the advice to no avail. We are on an iPad and have closed all other apps and rebooted it twice. We even removed the game and the. Re added it from App Store. Unfortunately we paid for unlock so got 10 min of gameplay and an hour of frustration. Let us know when you release a revision. Susan.

We usually love these games but we’re having an issue with the iphone version. We’re in the beginning of the game and collecting planets for Aunt Lassa, and we can’t get back over to the table where we’re supposed to place the two gears. There is no way we can go to the right side of the screen so that the table and telescope are visible. We’ve tried EVERYTHING we can think of and no luck!!!! Am we doing something wrong or is it a glitch in the game???? Help us??

We played maybe 10 min and quit. Playing a game that u have to bring the screen maybe 3 from ur face to read (I dont wear glasses) is more than we want to deal with. This writing is more for an iPad or maybe an ant.

No ability to wander around – restricted movement. Some of the puzzle did not operate – had to pass them by. While some of the HOPs were good – this game has the all time worst one we have ever seen: selecting rocks of slightly different shapes. A shame as the story was pretty good.

Looks promising but freezes on the free download. Uninstalled & reinstall twice , couldnt proceed on the free portion. Im not a novice, know what to do… WAIT TILL THEY GET THIS CORRECTED.

You can not get past the first chapter. No wonder the game is on sale.
