Kahuna Reviews

Have the original board game and enjoy this implementation. Worthy computer opponent.

We agree an undo button would be nice, but thats life.

Perfect blend of luck and strategy in a 2-player game. In fact, its our current favorite real-world board game now when traveling with our wife. This digital version is an exact port of the game, and makes for fun while on the run!

This is our favorite board game so we were excited to find out there was an app!! We love playing it but it only gives us single player. The 2 player mode and rank button are not highlighted for us to click on. Id love to play others! If we could play someone other than the computer Id give it 5 stars.

Elegant in its scoring mechanism, deep strategy. Fun to play but we’ve never gotten to play a real human. For most, the AI is hard to beat, but over time you will overcome all of them. Dropping a star as 2 player is broken. We suggest adding a Ladder, seed the Ladder order with the present Elo rated players. Challenge anyone within 200 places of you and if you win, you move up 1/2 the distance between you two. If your opponent does not answer the challenge with 3 days, you move up the ladder 1/2 distance, and your opponent moves down 1 place, the same if you win by playing out a game for the Ladder. If the higher player wins, he/she moves up 1 place and the lower ranked player moves down 1 place. Also, Your rating also changes with a Ladder challenge according to Elo difference as it does presently.

While our wife and we are close, the app couldn’t find us, and even we invite each other by imessage it didn’t work.

Well implemented. As a relatively short but meaty game, Kahuna hits the mark. Rules are simple and AI taxing enough for several hour campaign. Undo button should be included in future, please.

We dont typically like area control games, but Im really into this one and have played it around 20 times. We find myself drawn to playing it and feeling incredibly smart when we win. The game is well-designed, engaging, and plays fast. The app runs smoothly. We only wish you could undo your turns. If you think that would bother you, Id recommend you play this on Yucata. De instead.

Single player is frustrating, we are doubting the decks are randomly shuffled as the computer opponent seems to Always get the card they need. Buy only if you intend to play against another human.

This is our favorite game right now. Lots of strategy required, some luck involved, really fun to play due to the often highly non-linear progression of play (a single critical move can have a huge impact on the overall balance of power). We wish there were an undo button to fix errant taps, but otherwise this is just like the (super fun) board game, and relatively quick to play.

We’ve been playing this game for awhile. It’s good fun and worth the money. Haven’t encountered any bugs. An undo button would be a good enhancement.

This game was easy to learn and fun to play. We’re still trying to beat the AI on the higher levels but we are enjoying the challenge.

It’s a solid implementation of a light, fun board game. The UI has some rough edges but overall it’s good.

A really good implementation of the game with the only snags that keep it from being 5 stars for us is the lack any kind of undo button (a mistaken touch can mean doom) and a log to be able to review what the previous actions of your opponent were. Even with those couple nigglys we highly recommend the app for anyone interested in the game.

We havent beaten all the AI levels on three stars yet but we cant seem to be able to play in two player mode. Do we need to beat all 12 AI on three stars first?

Some issue with Game Center and Kahuna prevents two player from working. Please fix.

Two player doesnt work, the button is grayed out. Id attach a screenshot but we cant in this review.

OK, we downloaded this game today, sitting in the middle of the gd USA and it is in some foreign language. Dutch or German is our best guess. We can see no way to switch it to English. When we tap to open it in the App Store, it again opens in Dutch or German. Luckily we bought it on sale for 99 cents.

So, we must say how good this game is! Simple yet strategic and challenging. One pretty big issue desperately needing enhancement is the absence of game notifications for asynchronous online play. Game Center is used for this, which almost NOONE uses! So, games typically sit there idle for weeks because there is no badge icon or cue that it is your turn.

All our bugs were fixed :) we love this game….

Love the way the game plays, although sometimes it crashes (but picks up right where it crashed at). Annoying, but at least we don’t lose any game progress. And yes, a "pass and play" option would be very nice.

Love the Game. Three thoughts– First, a "pass and play" option for two players would be great. Second, sometimes when one player chooses to not pick a card the game lets the other player also not take a card. Third, it is not always possible to tell what cards have been played. For example, if two islands are full and a bridge between them is blown up, it does not show which two cards were played. Otherwise, this version of the game is excellent.

Version 1.1 definitely helped out with the crashing that was common in the original release. It’s a fun little game, one we’ve never had the pleasure to play in its original form. That said, the AI is quite challenging. The game definitely doesn’t help you progress from a novice level to an advanced one… It’s more like intermediate to highly difficult. The early AI opponents could be more forgiving. Still, we enjoy the app and we can honestly say we’re glad we bought it.

At end of game a scoreboard immediately covers up the entire play area without the option to view the final board. Why??????? One should be able to review the final board at leisure (hide/show the score one presented with it). As is, there’s about one second available for this . . . .

Enjoyed our first few games. Definitely challenging. We’re sure the few original bugs will be fixed soon. Another brilliant ipad game, after Wars of Roses.

We would like single player games to save when you back out of the app, besides that its perfect.

Simple rules but engaging. Nice presentation and atmosphere. Solid.

We’re a pretty good kahuna player and love the game so we were very excited when this app was released. The higher level AI gives a decent challenge, but lack of pass and play option is perplexing. Also, the game has gotten hung up between rounds quit often. This is VERY annoying. We have an Ipad 3 running latest iOS so we’re not sure how this problem would sail through testing unnoticed. Get this fixed and it’s a fairly goo treatment of the game. Very intuitive interface and Iike the presentation.

It took us 4 rounds to figure out the rule and beat the fisherman, yet once u know the rule the AI becomes so ridiculous and dumb! Way too easy! Chiefs are fine though. However the game keeps crashing when we’re about to win! Umm avoid lose uh? Anyway, u need to modify its eval function to make it better. Provide HARDER levels! Plz! Also Plz fix multi player problems as mentioned by others.

This app is great except for the constant freezing! The freezing always happens when playing AI at the very end of the game. It’s super frustrating to be on the cusp of victory and the game freezes and you start all over!

Fun game, because the board game is fun. AI is unbelievable. There is only one setting: ridiculously hard. This game doesn’t ease you into learning its mechanics at all. It teaches you the rules and then expects you to lose 50 times against the level one fisherman to learn everything else. Finally beat the fisherman, beat the surfer, went back to the fisherman, he destroys us completely. Where is the sense of progression? If this game wants to keep the player coming back, we should at least be able to beat the fisherman consistently if we can beat the surfer. As such, we don’t think the game was designed that way. We think the single player campaign is secretly you playing against the same AI no matter the AI’s "level". You got a good AI. But you have a terrible single player campaign.

Sick of the game crashing when we’re about to win the 3rd round. Wouldn’t be as bad if the game was saved. Add ability to save as well. Easily 5 stars if these things get fixed. Super addictive.

Graphics are only passable, interface is both ugly, with blocky letters on brown squares, and inadequate. The difficulty is atrocious, set WAY too hard for beginners on early levels, with no real tutorial. Finally, the game crashes, frequently, and can’t be minimized. All in all, a disrespectful treatment.

We can’t even comprehend how there is no local multiplayer? Pass and play is the bots basic concept for a board game digital version. We bought this hoping to have something to play with our wife on the plane. We love this game and play the physical game all the time. We play Ticket to Ride as a pass and play when traveling and was really expecting this would be another great one for us. Unacceptable!

It’s a great game – but please fix the embarassing bugs: – often hangs at end of round – single player progress is lost if you minimize – (once in twenty games) it did not score the last round properly and we lost fix the bugs and it’s 5 stars.

Apx. Half the games become frozen and unplayable. Kahuna is a great game but this product should not have been released. It’s a waste of time in its present state. Will upgrade rating if they fix it. In the meantime, buy at your own risk.
