Description

***** APRIL UPDATE *****
40 new standard puzzles + 15 bonus beginner puzzles

Presented by Cracking The Cryptic, YouTube’s most popular Sudoku channel, comes a new game based on our most requested variant: Killer Sudoku.

In Killer Sudoku, every puzzle features cages that tell you the sum of the numbers inside. This extra information leads to beautiful logic that you will master as you progress through our handmade puzzles. The puzzles in Killer Sudoku are created by Simon and Mark as well as a large number of guest creators. Fans of Cracking the Cryptic’s YouTube channel will recognize many of these authors as some of the most talented creators working today!

As with our other games (‘Classic Sudoku’, ‘Sandwich Sudoku’, ‘Chess Sudoku’, ‘Thermo Sudoku’ and ‘Miracle Sudoku’), Simon Anthony and Mark Goodliffe (the hosts of Cracking The Cryptic) have written all the hints for the puzzles. So you know that every puzzle has been play-tested by a human being to ensure that each sudoku is interesting and fun to solve.

In Cracking The Cryptic’s games, players start with zero stars and earn stars by solving puzzles. The more puzzles you solve, the more stars you earn and the more puzzles you get to play. Only the most dedicated (and cleverest) sudoku players will finish all the puzzles. Of course the difficulty is carefully calibrated to ensure lots of puzzles at every level (from easy through to extreme). Anyone familiar with their YouTube channel will know that Simon and Mark take pride in teaching viewers to be better solvers and, in these games, they always craft the puzzles with the mindset of trying to help solvers improve their skills.

Mark and Simon have both represented the UK many times at the World Sudoku Championship and you can find more of their puzzles (and lots of others) on the internet’s biggest sudoku channel Cracking The Cryptic.

Killer Sudoku CTC Reviews

Killer sudoku are IMO the best variant, due tom the sheer variety of logical techniques the setter and solver can explore. These puzzles are really fantastic. Every one is thoughtfully crafted, each infused with a delightfully unique structure and narrative. The puzzle interface is simple but effective, with a sophisticated hint system designed to teach new solving techniques. All in all this app feels like a labor of love. Couldn’t recommend it more highly.

All of CTC’s Sudoku apps have beautiful puzzles and excellent tools. Our only request for their Killer (and Sandwich) Sudoku is to include list exclusion (in the given lists of sums) in the undo stack. We will often run aground and need to undo myself back a bit, and we lose our thread of deduction when the lists we’ve grayed out don’t revert. If this is a known challenge for UX (it might appear that nothing happened), we would suggest showing (and flashing?) the sums panel when undoing those exclusions. We give it 5 stars regardless, but knowing how thoughtful they are we thought we would offer this request for future updates!

Love the app, but cant find a way to reset it and start over again.

Great sudoku app with many well thought out puzzles. One knock is how battery draining the app seems to be. Maybe chosing to build something this simple on Unity was not the right choice?

We really wish this and the other Cracking apps shared the same interface as actual "Cracking The Cryptic" app. It was far more versatile allowed for negative notes, more color highlights, number pad orientation, etc. It was disappointing to get so used to those solving tools and then discover the reduced toolset for the other series of apps.

Best interface of any killer sudoku app on the market. Big problem, though. The puzzles authored by Cracking the Cryptic are much more difficult than puzzles rated similarly by other authors. Since this was developed by CTC, it would seem that they are not good judges of their own puzzles. It leads to random difficulty spikes that are frustrating for players like myself just learning the ropes.

Love the puzzles in this app, but after the last update, the app is unusable in landscape mode (iphone 13 pro max). Clues are automatically displayed and when they are, they’re just a tall and skinny column that you can’t even read. It’s a small bug that completely destroys the app’s usability.

We enjoy Cracking The Cryptic variations on Sudoku puzzles and spend more time than Id like to admit playing them. Sometimes when playing the more difficult puzzles, we look to the hints to get insight as to how to solve them. Many times, the hints are vague and do not help to understand the step. We get that it may be text length limited but if it doesnt help, why bother. Keep making these puzzles while trying to help with better hints for solutions.

CTC sudoku apps are the only sudoku apps worth installing. High puzzles and apps, should be the first (and only) stop you make when looking for new puzzles to try.

We’ve really been enjoying this app. It is well made and the puzzles range from easy to very difficult. Id mostly recommend this. Our biggest complaint is the hint system. Smart hints are nice, but often will tell us things we already know. Regular hints well they use a lot of jargon and state things that are not obvious and give free explanations. Some puzzles are better than others, but as the difficulty ramps up Im finding the hints harder to follow. The hint may say these four cells need to be a 6/7/8/9 quadruple or that these two cells must add up to 4, but we have no idea how they got to those limitations. As such, Im not learning any new strategies. (And sometimes the hints are leave us completely confused.) we did get this app a second time on our android tablet so we could play on a larger screen. Currently the syncing function will sync or merge progress, but it does set your completion times to 999:59 for all your puzzles. (Or at least it did for us.)

The puzzles are well designed and extremely challenging! Unfortunately, if youre not as smart as the Cracking The Cryptic crew, the in-game hints often seem to be focused on conserving space over explaining their logic, which often leads to hints asserting facts not in obvious evidence, which doesnt help the user understand what theyre doing wrong.

The app is beautiful, however we dont like the puzzles so much. Most of them require brute force solving. By that we mean you have to take a guess and keep going until you hit a contradiction, then you guess again.

So glad to finally have another amazing app from our favorite YouTube channel. We’ve been addicted to Simon and Mark for the past several months, and we love getting to solve these puzzles. We appreciate how similar to the Sandwich Sudoku app, this one provides all possible combinations of digits when you click on a cage. This is especially helpful for those of us who arent as quick witted as the CTC geniuses. If you take requests, we would very much love a Kropki and/or XV app!

Fantastic app! Easy to use and lots of options to customize the gameplay. Puzzles are TOUGH, but each has a set of helpful hints that teach you tricks to learn from.

We never take the time to write reviews for apps, because there is usually not enough motivation for us to. However, there are so many great things about this app that we felt this app deserves to be known for. The puzzles. These are not computer generated, run of the mill puzzles. There is always something very neat about puzzles set by a human, and the developer for this app knows that. The logic is always satisfying to discover. The challenge of the puzzles is also at a good level: for those who have never seen this sudoku variant before, it may be tough, but for those who have seen one or two solves, these puzzles (at least the first five or so) wont kill you. A good way to get into them, we say. We know with this app that when we click on a puzzle, we will be getting an interesting logical stimulant that has a gorgeous solution. The design. This app is made by people that solve puzzles every day and love them. They know what feels good in a sudoku design and what doesnt. The settings also allow you to choose how much of the note taking and number filling the computer does for you. No ads in sight (but that would be silly on a paid app). The cost. For the amount of work it takes to put together this level of a sudoku app, $5 is more than reasonable. It doesnt hurt that these developers are on round 6 of sudoku apps and know exactly what their consumers expect for five dollars. In short, there is no better killer sudoku app out there. This one is fresh and stimulating. This is the perfect gift for a holiday season, for yourself or for others. We cannot recommend it enough. Thank you, CTC!

Wonderfully challenging games that will keep you binge playing for hours.

We love everything Cracking the Cryptic puts out. Not only are the puzzles fun to play over and over, but their hints are also great at teaching how to be better at the puzzles.

We’ve been a big fan of the Cracking the Cryptic apps, and this one is the best iteration so far. The author line up is great with Christopher Seeliger leading off the puzzles. The killer cages are easily visible, and the themes are a good mix of colors. Like the Sandwich Sudoku app, there is a column to show possible combinations in cages for those of us who struggle with mental math. There are 40 puzzles to start, which we think will keep most solvers busy for a bit. The only downside was we were hoping there would be some little killer puzzles, but it doesnt look like there are any. Thats a bit of a nitpick since that was never really promised, but it would have been fun to see since combo killer-little killers are quite fun. In case case, this is well worth the money. Another great addition to the CtC app collection.

The calculator is awesome and the list of choices that you can filter helps so much. We hope that more puzzles are added soon!

Killer sudoku is our favorite sudoku variant, and when we heard Cracking the Cryptic was releasing their own app, we were thrilled. As with their other apps, every single puzzle is hand-crafted and tested, and the creators themselves have written a series of hints for each puzzle that not only help you find the next step if youre stuck but actually teach you techniques to improve your skills. Every puzzle in this app is absolutely extraordinary. Theyve been constructed by some of the worlds best setters. This is NOT your average killer sudoku. The logic involved is unique and exciting to find. Plus, the app has every feature we could ask for in a sudoku app: double notation, your choice of error-checking options, the ability to highlight and color, undo and redo. And specific to killer, it will add up cage totals for you, and it gives a list of all possible combinations for a given cage, and has a calculator for you to test other combinations. Its a magnificent app, and well worth the $5. Our only real complaint is the occasional typo in the hints, but it hardly mars the overall experience. Also, if there were a way to view the hint and the grid at the same time, that would be helpful.

We are blown away by the little calculator that adds up your cage totals and tells you how many possibilities there are, coupled with all the highlighting (I have a lot of the features turned off, including highlighting errors and restricted cells) this app seems like does the puzzle for you, if we had all the features turned on it just about would! Good luck going back to pen and pencil sudoku after using this app! The software they use on YouTube and the software you get to use when you play those games seems antiquated by comparison to this software. Overall this is not a complaint, we like this software but we are losing our scanning skills as a result of using it.

Love this app, really challenging but fun killer sudokus to play! Only criticism we have is adding new puzzles. Hoping for more puzzles to be added but love it regardless. Lets get cracking!

Great utilities for figuring out possible combinations. Great UI (the corner notes don’t cover up cage totals like in your web app. Only one nitpick, we seem to have a different difficulty scale than you guys. The first puzzle, rated one star, took us just over 50 minutes because we just couldn’t see the logic of summing 8 of 9 boxes in a row to get the remaining digit. Stairs (puzzle 10), rated five stars, only took us 15. If you overlook our weird mind thing overlooking easy logic, it’s a great app with straightforward to absolutely fiendish puzzles. Highly recommend the app and the YouTube channel if you are somehow unaware of it’s existence.

These are the best Killer Sudoku puzzles you will ever solve. They are not created by an algorithm like so many apps, these are hand crafted by some of the best sudoku setters in the world. Each one takes you on a journey where you discover new tricks and ideas. The interface is great, the hints are very strategic and handmade as well. Just 6 months ago we were not aware of the world of handcrafted Sudoku puzzles. Now, because of the Cracking the Cryptic You Tube channel, we cant get enough. Keep it up guys!

The utilities in this app along with the beauty of the puzzles make it perfect for us to grow in our sudoku solving skills. We can practice more of the solving techniques seen in the CTC videos. It is a joy.

The quality of each and every one of these hand crafted puzzles is superb. We look forward to the next update!

A great app for when Im looking for a really tough puzzle to chew on for an hour. One of the few puzzle apps where we dont feel too guilty about resorting to a hint now and then. Or if eight or nine minutes go by and we cant find a logical deduction thatll move us forward, the app makes it possible to make a guess as to a digit in a particular box and see where it leads. We color the box before we make our guess as to its contents, so that if we reach a contradiction, we can quick undo our moves until the color disappears and Im back where we started. Very handy. Speaking of hints, though, the first hint in puzzle #22 is in error. One suggestion: When one taps on a box, all the other boxes that that box sees are shaded. Id find it helpful if the other boxes within the same cage could shaded in a slightly different color.

We really appreciate all of Cracking the Cryptics sudoku apps, and this is one of our favorites. We enjoy that the puzzles in the beginning teach you the particular logic that youll need for more challenging puzzles (like how the first puzzle teaches you to use The Secret). One aspect we really like is the app does a lot of accounting aspects for you, like giving you possible combinations for a given killer cage along with a calculator, plus automatically removing pencil marks that a placed digit interacts with. That is the developers respecting the intelligence of the solver; the challenge is deductions, not getting buried under your pencil marks or petty arithmetic. Top notch app, hats off to the setters who contributed and the development team.

Im enjoying the difficult puzzles so far! We hope they can add cloud sync feature to the app so we can pick up the game between our iPad and iPhone. The pass phrase system is not very convenient and Apple provides a mechanism for apps to sync. It would be greatly appreciated!

One thing we’ve liked about the CTC apps is that they generally have a pretty gracious difficulty curve where you slowly get introduced to more concepts relating to the sudoku variant. Consequently, we’ve found it a bit harder to develop an intuition for this one. We felt almost completely lost after the first few. Of course Im still learning, but we’ve had to view the hints quite a bit. We think for example after you get the 12 cage in puzzle 5 the logic is quite accessible most people would be able to figure it out. However getting that cage is a multi step process where you have to look quite a bit ahead to understand. We definitely dont think that deserves to be a 3 star puzzle for that reason.

Im sure the quality of these puzzles is excellent, and we look forward to trying them once the app receives a key improvement. Current the corner pencil marks do not display in the same location in various cells depending on whether or not the cell contains a cage total, making it much more difficult to scan the grid and much less satisfying to use the app. We will be happy to update our review and increase our star rating once this is fixed, but at present we cannot recommend the app.

Lower left square has 3 cages with one space left and yet the total is already 45. So cant solve puzzle 2, which is required to get enough stars to move to puzzle 3. Checked for updates to fix problem but none available.
