A Glimpse into Letter Box – Word Games for Brain Training

Featured and Promoted as a Best New Word Game by Apple!

Letter Box is a fun new word game that combines elements of jumbles, Boggle, and Scrabble into one! Playing is as simple as tapping letter tiles.

Each puzzle is a grid of letters. Your job is to move the letters around until each row and column contains a word. Puzzles come in three sizes: 3×3, 4×4, and 5×5. They’re a great brain teaser while you’re waiting in line, sitting on the bus, or trying to avoid talking to your blind date.

And while it would be cool if the game was more complex and needed a really long, robust description – it’s really that easy. Pick a puzzle size and start swapping tiles. If you need a hint there are an unlimited number of them at your disposal (though trying to solve the puzzles without hints is pretty fun, too).

So if you love word games, you might as well check out Letter Box. I mean, what else are you doing? Nothing. You’re sitting looking at nerdy word games on your phone. So stop dilly dally-ing and download this game already!

This is a game we’ve looked at in the App Store a million times, but only just now downloaded. The developer is a favorite, Ross McNamara, whose ultraminimalist games Logic Grid Puzzles and Cryptograms have kept us continually entertained for the three years since we first downloaded them. While we always thought Letter Box pretty, we didnt think itd hold our attention. We were wrong. By Day Two, when the offer popped up to buy all kajillion puzzles (current AND future, for a very reasonable 99¢), we were absolutely ready to own it. Its clever and fun, and challenging right from the start. So many of the better, mega-level games take FOREVER to get challenging (WordBrain and HarMoNy, for example) so this is one of our happiest things about Letter Box. The artwork is LOVELY, the sounds DIVINE. Its a wonder this is created by the same dev as Logic Grid Puzzles, which is aesthetically just a teensy step up from traditional pencil-and-paper versions (Ross highly amusing writing is what sells that game). The sounds remind us of those beautifully simple, soothing, metallic-mechanical click-whirr sounds you hear working a fishing reel on a placid, mist-laden lake at dawn. Im seriously in love with this games sounds. And thats no small endorsement: Typically, we quickly become annoyed with game sounds and turn them all off forever. Id enjoy the addition of some nice haptics. Heres the only glitch we’ve encountered thus far: Once Id completed our first 4×4 puzzle, the expected achievement popped up but then, erroneously, so did the 5×5 achievement. Not too shabby as errors go. We do note, however, theres apparently been no updates in THREE YEARS??! Happily tho, the app seems to work fine with the current iOS. Mssr. McNamara needs to put his dev hat back on: YOUR BABY IS LIKE, SIX NOW. Get back to work, you! Thanks for another great brain game ()

Who writes the clues? Id like to be their best friend! We love logic puzzles and the humor of the clues makes this game delightfully challenging! Also, the simplicity of the app design is a welcome and appreciated feature in the world of apps with far, far too many useless and irritating graphics.

We are really enjoying playing this game the only downside is we want more levels for free.

It is fun but the 3 x 3 puzzles are more challenging than we expected. That is probably our fault for trying to play at 11 PM. Lol.

This is a neat, simple word game that’s similar to filling out one corner of a crossword. For the extra $.99 or whatever we grabbed all the extra puzzles. Perfect game while waiting in line or when you have 2 to 6 minutes to kill. Some minor tweaks would help this game. The grid clicking is a tad too slow, the board of play should be larger – there’s no reason it shouldn’t stretch the width of the phone screen. We just found one bug worth sharing. In 4×4 mode, puzzle pack 3, board #17 cannot be solved. In frustration we kept clicking more hints until the whole board was "solved" for us. But it wasn’t. WHOO isn’t a word. The board didn’t solve itself; it simply locked in every letter for us and left one row incomplete. Ah well. At least we can click onward to the next board. But that was a frustrating 22 minutes. Still worthy of you $2. UPDATE: we’ve completed 2/3 of the boards and we LOVE this game. Excellent for any crossword fan.

We could not get any letters to move and rearrange so we deleted after trying several times.

Also couldnt get the tiles to move. Thought we were doing something wrong but couldnt see a way to get back to the tutorial to check. Also deleted the game.

We keep running into puzzle that have all correct words but will not complete the round. It’s a fun game and that happens in maybe one of 20 rounds but it’s a bug nonetheless.

We’re still working through all the levels in the first pack but we haven’t put this down in the 90 minutes we’ve owned it! Thanks!

We can’t find how to contact you. We used App Support but could’nt find a way to reach you. We keep getting a msg saying we can get all the packs for 99 cents. But we do it and it says no in app purchases allowed. Followed directions but can’t get a fix.

Great game of trying to mix and match to solve each puzzle. Definitely challenging but feels good when you get one right.

The game within the game is trying to solve the puzzles without using hints. This can be very difficult, but so rewarding. Even though you only get three stars for efficiently completing a puzzle, we have to give this game five stars because it has gotten us through several boring flights. It has also taught us a lot of short words that we didn’t know.

We love puzzles and we usually feel we’re pretty good but these can really stump us! You think you’ve got it and then 1 word doesn’t match. We appreciate all the available hints but try very hard not to use them.

This game had us hooked immediately! It is just the right amount of challenge so it never feels boring. If you like word puzzles this is a must get!
