Wayward Souls – Entertainment Game Review
![]()
Wayward Souls is a Entertainment/Roleplaying/Adventure game from Rocketcat LLC, first launched in 24th April 2014.
It’s rated 9+ and currently has 527+ ratings on the App Store.
What Makes Wayward Souls Stand Out
Wayward Souls is an action-adventure game built for quick playthroughs and massive amounts of replay value. It was inspired by Spelunky, Secret of Mana, and our previous game, Mage Gauntlet.
Procedurally generated random levels mean that every time you play the game, it's a different experience. Control one of six characters, all with their own unique playstyles, abilities, and equipment. Explore and fight for survival, in combat where your tactics, positioning, and timing matter.
More Features:
- Fancy control scheme with no virtual buttons or sticks to fumble over.
- Unlock new areas, for increasingly punishing difficulty.
- 13 area types, all with different monsters, potential traps, and rare encounters.
- Each character can find equipment combinations that change their gameplay.
- Victory is based on your increasing skill as a player, not solely on grinding.
- Hats.
- No IAP ever, even for the hats. All content updates will be free for our fans.
- Unprecedented scope and variety for an action-adventure game on iOS, maybe anywhere.

Community Insight:
This game is good but please add iCloud save. We cant switch progress bettween our divices.
This is truly one of the best action RPGs on mobile. Rocket if you could just make it to where we could listen to our own audio while playing we would appreciate it. Id like to listen to our podcasts and audiobooks while we play. Thank you for making such great games without microtransactions! Truly a hero of the people.
When the game glitches and Im locked in a room with no enemies spawning and no way out. A heartbreaking glitch.
This game is the perfect successor to Mage Gauntlet, which we adored as a teenager. Though we would love if we could sync our game data in iCloud, so we could continue playing on our iPad! Love you guys.
We all know mobile games these days are senseless, low effort, ad revenue sponges. But this game has held up for years and years. The gameplay is fun, the content is expansive, and the experience is an amazing time. This is one of the few mobile games we are actually happy we spent money on, and we hope and pray that it doesnt become unsupported and unplayable.
Add a Witch, WitchDoctor, and Magician class. Allow the Witch to use witchcraft and the WitchDoctor to use voodoo.
This is the only review we will prolly willingly write but this game has it all tbh. Its music is a banger and really brings the ambiance. The upgrades are fun and well designed as well as showing up on your character, the character progression system is nice as you have to work your way up before reaching the potentially broken ones (and also keeps the game interesting as you progress. Actual banger game and we really enjoy it. Good job devs.
Thank you for continuing to care about your product and customers. Great game, keep it up.
The quality of this game makes it good enough to be on a handheld gaming system like a DS. We also found that it scratches our desire for a Souls-like challenge for mobile games. Wayward Souls makes it to the top of our recommended mobile games.
Its super fun but it really needs to have a cloud save option.
A lot of games from this era are not playable on current iOS devices, so its nice that this well-designed game has been brought along.
We are at the end of it, everything unlocked, but stuck. We may not be able to finish it.
We redownloaded the game on our new phone, and all our progress was erased! Bummer.
If youre generally a fan of Roguelikes, you can stop reading here and hit the Buy button. Its well crafted and mechanically deep, certainly worth it for a fan of the genre. But, if youre like us, this game wont be the Roguelike to get you into the genre. Despite procedurally generated levels, we found it maddeningly repetitive, without enough progression between runs to feel different or varied. The separate characters played somewhat differently initially but the game felt stale pretty quickly regardless of who youre playing with. This isnt coming from someone who played an hour, died a bunch, and quit. We logged enough hours and made enough progress to say that we think we understand what the game has to offer. It just isnt for us. TLDR: if you like Roguelikes and dont mind replaying the same section repeatedly, its a very impressive mobile version of the genre. If you arent already sold on Roguelikes, like us, Id recommend you skip it.
The paladin level is tough, on PC its easier because of the extra content. We pay for the game as well maybe not on PC but it would be nice to be able to enjoy the game as well :).
Do you like repetitive, grindy gameplay with clunky slow movement while getting attacked off the edge of the screen? Then Wayward Souls is for you! RocketCat dropped the ball on this one. We played this on the coattails of Mage Gauntlet, one of our favorite mobile titles. Its like they took all the amazing pixel graphics, beautiful haunting atmospheric music, and clever animations and battle mechanics of Mage Gauntlet and wrapped it in crappy procedural generation, making the difficulty infuriatingly steep to encourage replay and make up for the lack of actual content. It tosses out all the things that make roguelikes enjoyable – do you feel like you gradually learn enemy behavior and improve on your own merits? No, even when we know what we WANT to do, the clunky 4-directional attacks often go in the wrong direction, while enemies have full 360 degree attacks and are all twice as fast as us. Are you rewarded for skillful and tactical gameplay? No, you might randomly stumble into a room 10x harder than any other and ruin your whole run right there for no reason, with each stage being painfully long and repetitive. Are you making tough risk-reward decisions? No, exploration is entirely pointless in Wayward Souls. The only things to discover are random story elements that try to kill you, and difficult dead-end rooms with no telegraphing whatsoever. Weapon and skill upgrades are lateral moves – changing mechanics with downsides that usually overshadow your default move set. We stopped picking them up because they actually DECREASED our performance. And the game is so DARK trying to be atmospheric that we can never see what the heck is going on and often get blindsided with our screen at maximum brightness. We want so desperately to like this game. It comes from a fantastic development team with clever snappy writing and beautiful art design. We love all of their other games to bits, 5 stars across the board. But we wouldnt even recommend this game to rogue or dark souls fans. There are better options out there in 2022, save yourself the disappointment.
Feels like we just threw away $8.. While we applaud the graphics of this game and how smoothly it runs on our phone, gameplay and level design wise it is just utterly bland and devoid of fun. Seriously go watch a gameplay vid on YouTube before purchasing this, and you will see how dull it is.
You cannot shoot or attack diagonally, this game has been on our wishlist for a while so we were excited to start it up. Lost interest about 2 minutes in when we were killed because we had to line up with an enemy, stand still, shoot and then the enemy would move out of the way. Its ridiculous that you cannot shoot diagonally in a game like this. Frustrating, annoying, and a waste of time. If you could shoot diagonally we would give this five stars.
Sorry but playing the same level 30+ times isnt fun. Need to feel like Im making progress. Great music and visuals though.
Not the fun kind of difficult. Very grindy for what it is. Didnt know it was so rogue-like before buying.
Can you make it so when we delete the game we can save our progress, and make it so that we can save our progress across different devices.
Omg the arcade games in our like local pubs were better in 85.
Yessss they updated it to the pc version. Im soo happppyyy.
Legendary game that has stood the test of time. Thank you so much for bringing the Paladin to mobile. Rocket Cat is the bees knees.
Thanks, Rocketcat games, for being a stand-up, non-greedy, trustworthy company amongst a sea of bean-counting money-grubbers! The Paladin upgrade made our week. As well as a sad comment on our life, this free upgrade is another gem in your sparkling crown. Buy and play this game, y'all.
Thrilled the update is finally here. For those whove since lost their save (its been a couple of phones now!), go to extras and type paladin in the support box. Pain saved.
This will be the first review of an app we have ever written and very well may be the last. However, we had to take the time out of our day to praise the absolute masterpiece crafted by Rocketcat. The upmost love and care went into every last piece of this compelling, action-packed, rogue lite adventure. Blood, sweat, and tears went into designing the flawless, tight control scheme. Fast paced and aggressive enemies dwell within the Mines, Tower, Catacomb, and Labyrinth, guarding their secrets and the stories of up to 6 playable classes (a separate dungeon exists for the 7th class). Each comes equipped with a unique play style; customizable via in game upgrades that can shift gameplay drastically. Although permadeath exists for runs, a robust upgrade system allows you to power up your heroes so they can face the trials again, stronger than ever! Massive replay value lies within the procedurally generated dungeon maps and enemy placement, and each dungeon has its own boss lying in wait for foolish adversaries. Collectors will have their hands full obtaining the multitude of hats stashed away in the dungeons. All in all, we can genuinely say, as an avid gamer, wayward souls is one of our favorite titles hands down, with endless hours of content, charming graphics, engaging gameplay, and rewarding progression systems. 11/10 would recommend.
Ive been playing Wayward Souls off and on for at least 5-6 years (we think its been around that long?) and its a game we can always return to after a hiatus. Difficult but (mostly) fair, addictive run-based gameplay. Unobtrusive progression that doesnt hinder the roguelike aesthetic. Excellent story explored through both linear narrative and in random lore rooms. AMAZING music that we would love to jam out to on Spotify, SoundCloud or something (hint hint) What more could you want? This game singlehandedly made us pick up Death Road to Canada (their next game) just to see what Rocketcat could do to follow this up. If we had only one complaint, the ridiculous amount of ridiculous hats are a little immersion-breaking. But thats such a minor complaint its not worth docking any points. You should try this game.
This game is such a great value! You folks need to bring this to the switch.
First played it years ago and got hopelessly addicted. The short sessions, quick fighting with fluid controls, interesting upgrade choices, variety of quirky characters, and random rare encounters kept us coming back for more. It was challenging but fair; most calamity could be avoided by knowing the enemy patterns, and improving our skill over time felt great. Provided months and months of high-quality entertainment. But we finished the story and the promised update never arrived. Now, the Paladin Update is finally here, and for once Im happy to have deleted our save. It feels like a brand new game, and Im going back to finally beat the endgame dungeons. P.S. If you want a mobile game like Hades, this is the best choice.
Im glad the game has finally been updated on the iOS again, its still great fun to play hopefully well see more down the line.
Love this game! Dreaming of playing this on the Switch someday! Much love.
As a huge fan of Mage Gauntlet, seeing this in the App Store was an enormous surprise. Such a great sequel! The controls are excellent, randomly generated dungeons, 6 possible characters to play with(all uniquely equipped), & HATS! Another excellent game of rocketcat's (PunchQuest) taught us, u can NEVER have too many hats! Highly Recommended.
Rocketcat is and has been one of the best devs on iOS for some time. Their titles this one included enjoy years of post-release support. Buy with confidence! Youll be covered for years to come despite device and OS updates and changes. This is a special bonus that fulfills a long-standing commitment to provide cross-platform parity to one of the best titles to ever appear in the App Store. Its about passion, not profit. Its a love letter to iOS fans. Thank you so much, Rocketcat.
This game triumphs as a fan favorite for us. We want to experience this game as we would on a PC and request keyboard support :)! Nothing fancy just movement controls would be plenty. Despite this games age we still consider it the #1 game on the App Store :) worth a buy mobile players.
We love the pixel art, controls are super smooth, and the music is superb.
This game is so easily worth the price. We own it on the google play and the App Store and there have always been zero regrets. This game is so much fun, and easy to pick up and get sucked in. The graphics are very well done, the controls are easy and responsive and the challenge is always present! We sincerely hope to see a sequel for Wayward Souls one day if not something similar! Fantastic game hands down and keep up the great work.
We spent seven dollars on a whim and it has turned out to be the best whim we ever have whimmed!!! Seriously though enjoyable gameplay and the retro graphics are on point.
This game lacks any sort of micro transactions. Once you pay for the game its your skill and wits that win the game for you. The music is beautiful and the graphics feel just oh so good, pixel artwork done right in a way that almost screams late SNES. Just a warning:this game does not hold your hand. You will die. Many times. To the developer: we maintain exceedingly high standards for the games we 5 star, no micro transactions, quality translation, free of bugs. Games that we 5 star should be the quality standard for mobile games. Please continue the top quality work.
Honestly, the money spent on this game was some of the best money ive ever spent in the app store. We were bored one day and decided to look up some RPG game in the app store and ended up spending the next couple of hours becoming immersed in the difficult but rewarding gameplay, compelling story, and beautifully eerie and retro soundtrack. The game possesses such elegance and nostalgic charm, its difficult not to enjoy it. Sure, its sure gotten our blood pumping at some parts and even made us rage quit at a few, but when moving through corridor after corridor, taking hit after hit, one must always keep in mind that its all about the journey in Wayward Souls. Each character is fine tuned to match a certain playing style and we love to alternate between them, and discover different ways to use their abilities on various enemies. And dont even get us started on the enemies. This masterpiece boasts a sprawling bestiary the likes of which could go toe to toe with terraria itself. Coming across hostiles in their respective and beautifully designed areas always keeps us intrigued and alert. And on the areas, its always so refreshing and interesting when we discover a unique room in the keep, hallows, or catacombs that has extra loot, more mobs or even fragments of the story in the form or ghosts, notes, lecterns or mini-boss battles. All of these factors, paired with the soundtrack and smooth playability, create a dark and mysterious mood that pulls the player in and keeps them there, needing to find out the story of their characters as well as that of the cursed tower. The writing is great, animation & design; phenomenal, world building; immersive, playability; just difficult enough to keep the player wanting more. The hats? Spectacular! In a nutshell, you can tell how much care and work was put into this project by just three people at RocketCat, and we wish dearly that more people could see and enjoy it. A true masterpiece and a honorable tribute to the eighties dungeon crawler genre. May Dia grant you heath and prosperity! -A devoted fan.
Easily best game on the AppStore have had this for years now and thought why we havent left a review yet good work.
Why did you delete mage gauntlet. We need answers.
This game is one of the most fun and replayable games ive ever had for a phone. Each character plays differently with their own move sets and style. Its a tough roguelike but the character progression is there and no time ever feels lost. Super fun. 9/10.
Ive played this game off and on for a couple years, and we have no doubt this is one of the best games on the App Store. We think the paladin being added in would be a nice touch. And we would love to see some of the things in the pc version ported over. Such at the health fountains, teleports, and new areas. But all in all this game has been our best App Store purchase.
This game freaking amazing. It is a crime that it doesnt get more exposure. The gameplay is tough at first but as you play youll see how finely tuned this game is to much your skills. And above all, this game has more heart than anything Ive seen since Shovel Knight.
This is still our favorite game on ios and we Uninstalled it after waiting for years for the "paladin" update that never came. What happened.
We bought this game in like 2014-2015, if not for a photographic memory; we would have paid $7 for a game we already bought. Great game. GREAT SOUNDTRACK! 5/5.
Its a wonderful work. The gameplay is hard but fair. Soundtrack is very nice and compelling to listen to. Not a game for those who are looking for a quick experience or easy gameplay. The story building elements used in the game are fantastic and just about everything involved in the gameplay builds a unique world worth expiriencing. Some neat references via hat system and comedic or interesting random events that further enhance your gameplay and the overall story. It can be frustrating when you get stumped at a certain part or certain enemies give you trouble and whem that happens we take a break for a while but we always want to come back and return refreshed to keep going and manage to figure out the enemy and keep progressing. Loads of hours sunk into it and theres still much more to be done. Definitely worthy of 5 stars.
We dont usually fork out several dollars for an app, but we found this title in a reddit thread about good rpgs on ios, and it does not disappoint. The gameplay is fine-tuned and complex. The playability is very deep. There isnt a traditional plot per se, but the character backstories are delivered in bite-sized chunks in a way that creates a sense of mystery and suspense thats almost as good as well-developed lore. Its a good classic rpg on ios, which is unfortunately extremely rare. Well done.
Plz when you get a chance add paladin update :).
