Residual – Action Game Review
![]()
Residual is a Action/Adventure game from Pascal Bestebroer, first launched in 8th September 2022.
It’s rated 4+ and currently has 14+ ratings on the App Store.
What Makes Residual Stand Out
Residual… a new breed of survival platformer from OrangePixel.
In a forgotten galaxy full of strange planets, a lone explorer crash-lands on one with an ancient alien secret. Venture forth from the shipwreck across a harsh, unpredictable, procedurally generated world. Harvest food and make campfires to stay alive. Craft science-fiction survival tools like teleporters and mining devices. Unearth alien technology capable of repairing the ship. Hunger, cosmic storms, hostile plant life and the mysterious ooze are among the many obstacles you’ll face.
You won’t be alone! PDB (a snarky floating Personal Disaster Bot) will follow and assist you along the way. Sometimes. PDB also helps you discover the hidden lore, revealing the history of the planet as you explore deeper and deeper, assuming you can survive!
OrangePixel’s uniquely designed Nature Engine generates 1000’s of planets from a vast set of environment-based rules, then drops explorers on a world brimming with potential. If a planet orbits close to the sun, intense heat, high winds, and sparse vegetation will pose a set of challenges wildly different from other worlds. Further from the sun, long nights make stamina easier to maintain, but reduced solar power turns every suit function—like scanning the planet—into a critical decision.
Residual welcomes players to a non-violent survival experience with limitless possibilities and no traditional combat. Jump and descend through colorful, highly detailed pixel art evoking classic 2D platformers. Solve light puzzles to reveal secrets of a long-lost civilization. Select a male, female, or non-binary protagonist, customize survival parameters like how fast time advances, and race to repair the ship, dig up ancient secrets, or collect data entries on hundreds of undiscovered objects.
This Action game offers engaging gameplay and regular updates for mobile players.

Community Insight:
We can't understand without Chinese This game has Chinese and many people will play it, so we prefer this kind of game.
Just echoing others. The controls need some tweaking. They just dont feel right and Im constantly fighting with them. Maybe even just making the deadzones start a bit beyond the button icons would help. Other than that, the game is promising. It looks like a really deep game that someone could sit and play for hours at a time. Hopefully controller support is added in the future if its not already (we plan on getting one in about a month – after Xmas is done with). Thank you for the sale.
We really enjoy the game. After buying it on iOS, we grabbed it during a Steam sale as well. On the PC we were able to have success. The problem with this version – it is too dark. We realize we could craft torches, but those dont last long enough (and crafting materials are limited in the game). Also, we get the sense that the random generation accidentally creates blocked areas that were intended to be passages. At this point, Ive managed to grab sealant on one world. We have certainly spent time on this game and enjoy many aspects. However, the planets all seem to create an accidental dead end which halts progress.
To be honest Ive only played about five minutes, and the game looks interesting but mobile controls are clunky and keep us from wanting to play more. If there was an option for a virtual joystick we think that would be best, but the current directional buttons arent always responsive and their position isnt that comfortable, even with different sizes. If this were improved, id be glad to return to the game and give it another shot.
But after restarting four times we still have no graphite available.
This app would be great with controller support.
Would be excellent with controller support.
Really think we would enjoy this game. But the controls are an issue. Really needs controller support.
