Description

Don’t just memorize the odds, understand them … This app teaches you a general method for estimating the odds for just about any Texas Hold’em scenario in your head in real time.

No in-app purchases/fees.
Continual improvement for many years.

Note:

(1)
This is a challenging app. You need to be pretty good at doing basic math operations in your head. For example, what’s the value of:

16% * 20%

We’ve added a “Math” help button to show you how to calculate this in your head. One way is, 20% means one-fifth. One-fifth of 16% is (16% / 5), which is a little more than 3%. 3.2% to be exact. Or, convert to decimals, multiply, then convert back to %age’s.

(2)
This app uses specific hand situations, and some people don’t see the value in this because in real life play we don’t know our opponents’ cards. There’s still value in specific hand situations, because they’re the building blocks that we can use to put together and estimate the odds for more complex hand range situations. For example every good player should know the odds for specific hand situations like AJ vs. QQ pre-flop, or FlushDraw vs. TopPair on the flop. Our other apps e.g. PokerCruncher handle both specific hands and hand ranges.

Poker trainers, odds tables, etc. are useful tools but do they help you learn why the odds are what they are or are you just memorizing specific situations? And you can’t use these tools or odds/equity calculators in the middle of a live hand (would you really want to?; could be a “fish” tell :)). This app takes a new and different approach to poker odds – understanding instead of memorizing, so you can handle any situation that comes your way.

Our odds estimation method is a pretty simple 3-step procedure. First you count your outs and estimate your odds of improving (using for example the "Rule of 4&2"; this app shows you how). Then you consider your opponent’s counter-outs. Then you put the two together to come up with a good odds estimate.

We’ve provided about 20 common and important pre-flop and post-flop scenarios for you to practice the method on. This app will take you through the 3 steps for each practice scenario, one screen per step, and will make sure that you’re on track towards a good odds estimate each step of the way, correcting you if needed. We’ve provided info/help buttons for each sub-step.

You might be thinking, how can you cover a game as complex as Texas Hold’em in 20 scenarios? Well, we agree, you can’t! But this app is about learning a general method not many specific situations, and we picked these 20 scenarios to cover a good cross-section of common and important pre-flop and post-flop situations. If you understand how to calculate the odds for say one generic TopPair vs TopPairTopKicker scenario or one representative Pair vs LowerPair pre-flop scenario, you’ll be able to apply your knowledge to other similar situations easily.

Now, we’re not saying that you’re going to master this in 5 or 10 minutes. You’re going to have to practice the method more than a few times, think about the outs and counter-outs, and do simple math operations in your head – basic +, -, *, /; let’s not let our math teachers down :). We hope you feel that acquiring this odds skill and knowledge is more than worth the learning/practice time.

Updated on 24th October 2022

  1. A very small math fix in the TopPair vs. FlushDraw scenario’s step-by-step tutorial:
  • In the Step 2 – Counter-Outs screen, say Player1 has 1 counter-out not 0 counter-outs, and explain why.
  • This changes the final Equity answer in Step 3 by only 1%, from 36% to 35%.
  • Thanks to customer B.Z. for spotting this; great eye and attention to detail.
  1. Small wording improvements in a few other scenarios’ Step 1 and Step 2 explanations (no math changes).

Thanks for your latest app reviews. If you like Poker Odds Teacher and our continuing work, please consider writing an App Store review, thanks!

Poker Odds Teacher Reviews

Way too complex it’s like some geek wrote this app quickly and paid zero attention to ease of use and simplification. Looks like an app made before apps existed, horrible UI! We don’t recommend it at all.

We play a weekly game thats always dealers choice – Omaha, Stud, Cross Cross, Pash the Trash – basically anything but Hold Em. We’ve gotten good but to get to the next level we needed practice calculating odds. This is the only app we’ve found that both teaches you and gives you practice calculating odds using outs. Im sure this functionality is buried somewhere in many other Hold Em apps but this is perfect for learning how to calculate odds, implied equity, pot equity, etc. We would take points off for pretty bad UI (why a slider???, yellow font?) and it doesnt baby you as it teaches the math, but its the only thing out there that will give us the constant practice on the train, waiting for elevator, etc to try to start beating the shark at our local table. THANK YOU!!

This app has helped us improve our poker game since using it. We are faster and stronger at the tables.

While this does show you how to calculate the odds of a hand winning you must know the other players hand to use the apps method, which you wouldn’t in an actual game. Don’t waste your money.

Exactly what we were looking for. We always wanted a good way to learn the poker odds and this app does a really good job teaching it. The methods are pretty intuitive. It allows you to approximate the odds on the go so that u wont have to memorize all the odds for many useful situations. Although we do plan on eventually memorizing all of them it is always nice to be able to double check the odds with this approximating method before commiting money to the pot. (10&8 method preflop and 4&2 method postflop) we do agree with a previous review that the slider needs to be fixed. We own all three of their apps and find them to be much more useful and learnable(?) than a regular poker book which we find a little boring. Good job to the developers. Thank you!

Period. Excellent and responsive developers!

Not enough explanation, little diversity in scenario category and very vague formula theory and possibly inaccurate information.

Pure waste of money. Extremely poor instructions and very limited examples. Look for tutorials on line. Very little put into this app. Don’t waste time on this. We will not buy any more of their apps based on this experience.

Seems like odds would make more sense than percentages. Would be nice if you explained how the odds should match pot or implied odds when deciding what to do.

This app is not to bad, however it only gives the odds on a limited amount of hands. For example each for each lesson you would have to pick a preset hand scenario, like AA vs AK. We found the selection is to limited. For example there is no lesson to learn the odds on 1010 vs 44, however through each of the lessons you will learn how to calculate the odds for each scenario by learning the formula, so all in all it is worth the money, if you have an understanding of basic math. This is a tool to learn the formula, not memorize every scenario you might come across. There is the ability to learn both pre and post flop odds.

Only major issue is the slider. It needs to be fixed so it doesn’t crash to the side of the screen. It is too sensitive as well. Pinpointing a specific number is tough. Adding more situations would be nice too.

This app is not for begginers. It doesn’t explain the theory very well. What the creaters define as "outs" should be further clarified. Don’t waste your money.

This will teach you less than an intro Holdem book. Not for experienced players at all.
