Thanks for playing Sidewords!

The big new thing in this version is the addition of Daily Puzzles! You’ll be given 3 new puzzles every day (one small, medium, and large). Everyone gets the same puzzles to complete.

We’ve also added a link to a video tutorial (available by tapping the menu button in the top right of the puzzle screen).

And we’ve fixed the crash that was happening on iPad when trying to share puzzle solutions.

We hope you keep enjoying Sidewords!

Sidewords Reviews

As usual, Matt Rix has delivered a true gem. Worthwhile way to pass the time during quarantine!

Clever little game with a ton of content. It even comes with a bonus mini-game, and theyre putting out daily puzzles for the main game as well. Well worth the price.

We play a lot of word games. Sidewords and the bonus Quads game are both fun, different, and challenging. Kudos!

This game is great! It took a little bit to grow on us. We wasnt sure what we were doing and somewhat missing the strategy. Now that we have played it for about 2 weeks the strategy kinda just pops out and you really start rolling. Plus, we dont understand how any one can complain about a game like this. It is free, no adds, and it is a great word game so… Need we say any more? Alright, download it NOW.

The game is overall great, but loses a star for the number of non-words that it will accept while it sometimes also rejects real words. Whatever word list was used by the developer was a strange one indeed, and this can lead to some real frustration and/or incredulity when you find that you were able to solve a puzzle with a nonsense word.

Im enjoying this but am frustrated that several of the words we’ve tried are not acceptable. We like the concept very much. Using the rows and columns to make new words but not being allowed to double up is a very interesting challenge. And at the upper levels we’ve learned some words we didnt know.

Why is this in portrait-mode only? Useless for iPad with attached keyboard use. Deleting now.

This would easily be 5 stars if only we could sync between devices… Otherwise a great little game!

Can we rate this zero stars? Figured out how to tap on letters to make words, but we haven’t a clue how to place them within the box after we hit the check. We keep getting ‘overlapping words’, but we don’t have any idea how to avoid it. The You tube video goes too fast, also. The only way to contact them is thru Twitter which we are not on. An email address would’ve been great, also, but nope. A short tutorial would’ve been a welcome addition. We guess they figured that they didn’t need one? Sheesh. No wonder it was free. DELETE!

Too many restrictions. Words cannot overlap. We didnt know what that meant. We watched the tutorial video; it doesnt help much. Not very much fun to play. Deleting now.

We found this game on Twitter and we absolutely love it!!! It combines a gorgeous user interface and game play experience. 10/10 highly recommend.

There have been a lot of sleek, stylish iOS word games recently, but they haven’t grabbed us so much. We’re really into this one, and we think it’s because it’s the first one we’ve played that feels like the process of writing a crossword puzzle. It’s tricky but open-ended, and you can decide for yourself whether the goal is to complete each puzzle (already a challenging endeavor) or to make grids that follow a nice pattern or use certain words. Either way, the game doesn’t push you in one direction, but the result always feels satisfying. Cool stuff.

Simple, beautiful, engaging. Keep improving and beautifying over time, but please without sacrificing the purity of the concept. Thanks! Happy to buy packs now and then to reward your effort. Have not checked yet whether there is scoring and stats, but would love that to keep reaching the best solutions for all levels when bored. Levels seem to be crafted manually… Wondering whether there is a way to craft an algorithm that would randomly create levels of increasing complexity for a non stop experience. We hate to have to go back to get to the next round or level. Just go to the next one for us.

This is a rare app – challenging but doable, thoughtfully designed, clever and with a pace as relaxed as you might desire. Perfect word game, from the master who developed the wonderful Train apps. This is a jewel.

Easy to learn, smooth interface, challenging to play. A creative new twist on anagram-based puzzling, with a touch of Tetris mixed in. If you love word puzzles and games like Scrabble and Boggle, you will LOVE this app. Two quibbles: (1) clicking "share solution" doesn’t seem to do anything but crash the app, and (2) an "undo" option after tapping a word to remove it from the board would be nice. But these issues don’t really detract from the core of the app.

We are a crossword fan. We work a crossword every day to unwind. This is just as challenging and relaxing as that. The problem is we have run out of puzzles. We would gladly pay to have a puzzle a day or a bundle of puzzles.

All too often, we download games from the App Store that are just "okay", even when they require payment up front. We’re happy to say that SideWords is the diamond in the rough, a game we would wholeheartedly recommend opening your wallet for, as long as you enjoy word games. Unlike the typical hamfisted word game where your goal would be to think of specific random words the puzzle creator had in mind, or every possible word that can be generated from a given set of letters, SideWords puzzles have multiple solutions, and any one of them will do. All you have to do is find one that works. We haven’t been able to stop playing at every free moment we get!

Works great. Have to think and plan ahead.

There aren’t many truly new and unique word games out there. This one is smart and challenging. There are multiple ways to solve each puzzle which makes it fun to experiment. No IAP is a nice change too, although I’d gladly pay for expansion packs.

Lots of options for words on each puzzle. Very relaxing!

This game is excellent! Nice design and includes night mode. Perfect game to keep the brain working and keep you thinking all day long!

Mind stimulating, a solid hour of entertainment. This is the best word game we have ever played, completely worth the money in our opinion.

After blowing through the easy early puzzles, with several one word clears, we were surprised at how difficult it can be to partition the later stages. It’s different than a lot of other word games in that you often want to trade letters between different anagrams so you’re seeing if you can take a P away from this word because you need it in another word. One thing we would like is maybe a star you could get for each level if you solved it in the minimum number of words. Great times, with word permutations!

Totally absorbing and challenging for word game fans.

We love the freedom of this game. Each board has many solutions. We enjoy the freedom of being able to solve the puzzle with our words and our shapes. We know this is a bit corny, but consider this: Unlike other games, it does not try to force us to reach one "optimal" solution. If we solve the puzzle, we solve the puzzleno half measures. In the same spirit, we appreciate that no score is given contingent on, say, the length of the words or the number. The concept is charming, and new, and there is no time limit, so we concentrate on enjoying playing with words and fitting them together. Finally, we really appreciate the developer not wasting our time by requiring us to click through many intermediate title screens, like a lot of other casual games we’ve had. We really love this game and we are gifting to all our friends with an iPhone!

We bought this game on the whim, and we are overall very impressed by the gameplay. The only thing we feel missing is some sense of relative excellence in solutions. If there were some kind of scoring system, where larger words or fewer rectangles reap higher scores, we would feel more challenged to not accept the easiest outcome. Otherwise, this is a very addicting game, and well worth our investment.

Right now, we keep doing the puzzles, so we guess we’re enjoying it. But there is something about the solutions that feel a little arbitrary. They don’t necessarily feel like the "correct" solution, but rather that we have solved a problem. We think that’s because there isn’t one single solution to any particular puzzle. But, since we keep playing it, we’ll give it 4 stars. Hopefully, they will fix it so that you can rotate your iPad any of the four directions and it will still work. (Right now, you can’t even turn your iPad to the other part portrait orientation, let alone landscape.) At the mechanics for entering words, deleting words, etc. Are all intuitive, and the game offer is a lot of gameplay.

Others have noted poor instructions. A problem they could easily fix.

  • but once you figure it out, this game is exTREEMEly satisfying. We downloaded it yesterday and was very frustrated at first: if ever a game was in need of a proper Tutorial, it’s this one. And a FREE lite version would be recommended as well. After reading so many rave reviews about its originality, and as a huge lover of word games, we decided to give it a shot. After deleting it twice out of said frustration, we buckled down and just kept doing the first few puzzles over and over, to get the hang of it, seeing what worked, until moving on. Today we completed the Appetizers group, much to our delight.

We wasted $2.99 of our small income on a game that does not come with directions we tried u tube and the girl in the video couldn’t even spell never mind teach you the game. We tried google and nothing. The game just came out saying its a relaxing game and good for your brain. We guess we need a slow motion video for idiots!!!! Zero stars…. How dare you pre advertise a game saying its relaxing , but no instructions??? We want a refund … You have to know how to give a refund .. Don’t you???

We just downloaded this game and we have no idea how to play it. The tutorial was no help at all. It doesn’t walk you through a whole game. What does "words cannot overlap" mean?
